YA Books with Queer Characters that You Should all be Scrambling to Read Right Now!! // My Pride Month Recs + TBR

IT’S PRIDE MONTH!!!!

I know that this month is full of people gatekeeping and policing what can be defined as “queer” or not, but I just want to do something to keep me and this month as happy as we can be.

So today, I’ll be recommending queer books and talking about my Pride Month TBR of all queer books. I’m super super excited to be reading these books; I’ve been planning my TBR for months and I get to finally read these beautiful queer books AAAAHHHH.

Also, I’ve tried to mention all the marginalized identities represented in all the books mentioned, but I might have forgotten some and/or didn’t know the specific identity!  And please ask me for any content/trigger warnings, because I am happy to provide them!

**THESE AREN’T IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER DON’T MAKE ME PICK FAVORITES.**

simon vs the homo sapiens agenda

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Creekwood, #1)I read this in March 2017, and reread it March of this year. Story time: This book is literally the book that made me question my sexuality. Its famous line “White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default” made me text my friends, asking, “How do you know if you’re straight or not?”

I know. Questioning heteronormativity right from the start.

Anyways, when I did my reread, I teared up a lot because of how much I related to what Simon was saying. And also the characters mean so much to me, as well as the relationship, and it’s just so CUTE and HILARIOUS and I love it!!!!!

aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, #1)This book will forever be one of my favorites. It’s written gorgeously and the story it tells is truly beautiful. It talks about toxic masculinity and [internalized] homophobia and friendship and it’s a heartachingly gorgeous story written for queer people.

I just, love these characters so much? And their dialogue is also some of my favorite dialogue in books. And I think that a lot of queer people can relate to it. I’m getting a very strong urge to reread this now and I can’t say if I love or hate that urge.

Rep: Mexican gay male MC (questioning until the end), Mexican gay male LI. Ownvoices for Mexican and gay rep!

when the moon was ours & wild beauty

When the Moon Was Ours  Wild Beauty

Anna-Marie McLemore is one of my FAVORITE AUTHORS ever. She’s a queer Latina author and I love. her. so. much!! Her stories are written gorgeously and I absolutely adore them and I just !!! fjslfjskldjfsldkfj !!!

When the Moon Was Ours was the first book of hers that I read and I swear I FELL. IN. LOVE. The characters and relationship and story are all SO BEAUTIFUL. My heart just combusted. And Wild Beauty is just as beautiful and has so many perfect messages and I love the characters and relationship so, so much.

six of crows

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)Okay literally everyone knows that this is one of my top favorite books in the world, along with its sequel, if not my MOST favorite. It’s a literary masterpiece and if you haven’t read it yet, YOU NEED TO.

Not only is this story just,, an amazing work of art with the best characters and the best plot, it is also… so casually diverse? Half of the main cast is queer, two are POC, two have trauma issues, two are disabled, and one is fat. IN FANTASY.

Anyways. If I start screaming about this book, it’ll end up being novel-length, so if you want, read my “favorite moments and quotes of SOC” review. And definitely read this book.

girl made of stars

Girl Made of StarsIs anyone even remotely surprised I put this book on this list.

This book is my favorite book of 2018, no doubt about it. You all have heard me gushing about it but I’ll say it again: It’s the first book to make me cry since 2016, and I reread it TWO DAYS after I first finished it. I love it. I love it. I love it.

Do y’all really want me to say anything more about this? Because if I do, I won’t stop. You ALL have heard my screaming about this book. PLEASE READ IT. PLEASE. (Also, the bi and genderqueer rep is well done!!)

Rep: bisexual female MC, sapphic genderqueer (she/her pronouns) LI, Korean male LI. Ownvoices for bi rep!

autoboyography

AutoboyographyThis was my most recent favorite that had a queer cast and I literally still want to sob when I think about this. It’s heartbreaking at points, but so so beautiful and cute and made me genuinely happy.

It has a lot of flaws yes, especially considering that it’s another book about a queer teen coming to terms with themselves and not just LIVING—but that means that reading this book can be a cathartic experience for people who have went through that.

(Plus, as a bi teen, it made me feel really represented, and I think the bi rep was written very well!)

Rep: bisexual half-Jewish (as he calls himself) male MC, gay Mormon LI. Ownvoices for bi rep!

all out (anthology)

All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens Throughout the AgesThis is an anthology of historical fiction short stories all about queer characters by queer characters. While it wasn’t as diverse as I wish it could’ve been, I still really enjoyed it, and my favorite pieces in the book were SO so beautiful and powerful and hard-hitting. I even teared up over one of them!!!

Plus, this is an anthology of 17 stories of queer people in history, who usually are erased and said not to exist in the past. But they DO, and I really appreciate that this anthology captured the stories of those whose voices are usually smothered.

Rep: There’s a lot of rep in this anthology, so I recommend reading my review to know what specific identities are represented!

  1. I was hoping to find some unknow book but already know all of those XD
I haven’t read many from the list, aside from Ari and Dante and Radio Silence. I’ve Wild Beauty waiting for me since January. My best friend gave it has a gift. I need to notice her that has a bi rep. I wasn’t sure of it and I never looked up. She would love to know that.

Plus tomorrow I’m going to see Love, Simon. The only shame is that I’ve still to read the book but I will do as soon as possibile

    1. Oh I wish I could have included some not-so-well-known books but unfortunately I haven’t read enough of them yet!! After this month’s reads though, I’m definitely looking for more less hyped beautiful queer books 💞

I hope you get to pick up Wild Beauty soon! It’s such a GORGEOUS story, I absolutely love it. And yes the bi rep is fantastic! I love how pretty much all the girls are bi, it’s so nice to see something like that. 😍

I HOPE YOU LOVED LOVE, SIMON!!! It’s one of my favorite movies ever now 😭💛

  2. Six of Crows was amazing. Nina is easily my favorite character. Her love for waffles is enviable. <3

As an ace person, Let's Talk About Love by Claire Kann is the closest I've ever come to seeing myself on the page. Alice, the main character, is a Black teenager who is biromantic asexual and I loved reading her story. There's some hurting but more loving.

    1. Six of Crows will always be a forever favorite of mine. It’s just… absolutely amazing 💞

Oh, I am SO happy you were able to find yourself in Let’s Talk About Love! I’m super excited to read that one as well. (Also I’ve finished Summer Bird Blue, and as an ace-spec person I can say that the ace-spec rep was SO well done in SBB! 😊)

  3. Aaaah, you’re going to 💕love💕 How to Make a Wish! Somehow I actually haven’t gotten around to Girl Made of Stars yet, but it is very high on my list, as is Evelyn Hugo. Most of my queer faves are actually on that list but I would add Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy and Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann. :)

    1. Aahh, I’m so excited to read How To Makw a Wish! And oh, I hope you love Girl Made of Stars and Evelyn Hugo, both of them are absolutely amazing and deserve all the love <3 I've heard great things about Ramona Blue and Let's Talk About Love — definitely excited to read them one day!

  4. Thank you for making this amazing post, May! ❤️ My favorite books of all time (which also happen to be LGBTQ+, hehe) are Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Autoboyography, and I’m so happy to see those on your list!! 😍 They’re honestly such amazing books with great representation. Have you read Leah on the Offbeat, the sequel to Simon vs.? And have you watched Love, Simon? (I absolutely loved Love, Simon, but I think I still prefer the book!) Anyways, I have so many books to add to my TBR list from this post, like Six of Crows and Girl Made of Stars! I’m so excited to read them, especially due to your glowing reviews. 😍☺️ Sorry for this long comment, haha, but I also want to recommend another LGBTQ+ book: The Gentleman’s Guide of Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee! I’m not sure if you’ve read it yet, but it’s a historical fiction book with LGBTQ+, disability, and POC representation, and it’s honestly SO well-written and amazing all around.

    1. Oh, I’m so happy you loved Simon Vs and Autoboyography! Autoboyography doesn’t quite hit my MOST favorites list, but it’s definitely a queer favorite book of mine <3 Yup, I've read Leah and watched Love, Simon! I absolutely LOVED Love, Simon (I watched it three times hjfsldkf) and I originally loved Leah but now my thoughts are a bit mixed now :/

Oh, I hope you love Six of Crows and Girl Made of Stars! Those are two of my absolute favorite books, I love them so much. <3 And aahh, yup, I've read Gentleman's Guide! I didn't love it as much as I expected to, but it was still super enjoyable and I loved Percy and Monty <3

      1. Omg same haha, I watched Love, Simon three times in theaters as well! It was such a beautiful movie and I loved watching it every single time. :) And ahhh me too, when I first read Leah, I loved it as well, but now looking back at it, there are some parts that I really didn’t like. :/ (Spoiler: I really disliked the part where Leah hated on Abby for admitting that she was “lowkey bi.” She never even apologized for that afterwards, which sucked.)

Haha I know I already said this, but I’m so excited to start reading Six of Crows and Girl Made of Stars too! (I already placed them on hold at my local library; hopefully I get them soon!) Ahhh yesss I love Monty and Percy :) Anyway, thank you so much for replying to my comment! I really appreciate it. <3 I'm loving your blog so much!

        1. I HATED that part. Honestly a lot of my problems came from Leah? Like she is both a character you can connect to but also not really like? At least for me. And I KIND OF get where Leah was coming from (defending her sexuality, since I think she read it as “kinda gay but more straight”?) but she should have at least apologized. 🙄

I hope you get SoC and GMoS really soon!!! And I hope you love it 😊 (And of course! I’m a little bad at replying to comments nowadays but I try my best 😂)

  5. Ooh yes, these books are all amazing! Six of Crows is definitely my favorite out of all the books you mentioned but the rest are all great too (especially Radio Silence by Alice Oseman!!). I’m also adding more books to my tbr because I didn’t know that some of these books had LGBTQIA+ rep. Thank you for all the recs! :)
