It’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and I Have an All-Asian Book TBR to Celebrate!!!

The month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

My name is May. I am Asian. This was a month ma(y)de specifically for me.

(Just kidding my real name isn’t May at all so this isn’t even valid.)

It’s to no one’s surprise that I will be celebrating Maysian month (I am so sorry) by reading Asian books. It’s the perfect combination of things I love, my Asian identity and books!!

Though there are many Asian-related reading challenges to celebrate (Asian Lit Bingo and Asian Readathon, to name a few), I want read books I’m in the mood for, especially since I’m still recovering from a slump. I’m not going to put a lot of pressure on myself to read all these books, since to me it doesn’t matter what specific books I read, just that I read Asian books!

Also, thank you to the various people who got me copies of many of these books. It really shows the kindness of this community (but also how broke I am)!

Note: I definitely am being overambitious, and my reasons are 1) it was (and is still) very East-Asian-centric before I added more books, and I want to have more non-East Asian options, and 2) three of these books I’ve read ~100 pages of and had to put on hold lmao.

STRONGER THAN A BRONZE DRAGON

Stronger Than a Bronze DragonI was very lucky to be able to get an ARC of this, and I honestly cannot wait to start it!! Epic fantasy is not my favorite, but epic Asian fantasy? I’m in love with it already.

And from what I’ve read of reviews of this book, I have a feeling I’m going to love the characters. Acrobat warrior girl and funny thief boy seems like literally the BEST dynamic.

This book has Chinese representation! I’m not completely sure, but I’m guessing that it’s going to be an all-Chinese cast.

THE ASTONISHING COLOR OF AFTER

The Astonishing Color of AfterSo you’ll know that this was one of my most anticipated 2018 releases, and I was only able to get 100 pages into it before having to put it down. I was slumping at the time, it was slow, and it was also just very heavy content that was hard to read. I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to FINALLY read the whole thing now, because what I read was really good!

Main character is biracial (Taiwanese, white), and bonus for mental health rep (depression), since May is also Mental Health Awareness Month!!

FOR A MUSE OF FIRE

For a Muse of Fire (For a Muse of Fire, #1)This book was also another book that I got about 100 pages into before I had to put it on hold. I just was not in the mood for fantasy (and I don’t think I am right now either, for that matter) and there was nothing particularly exciting to hold my attention. However! I’m hoping that now that I’ve pushed past the beginning, more action will happen and I’ll absolutely love the rest of this book!

I’m not sure if the main character is Asian herself, but the author is biracial (Chinese, white), so I count it! Plus a bonus for mental illness rep (bipolar)!

A THOUSAND BEGINNINGS & ENDINGS

A Thousand Beginnings and EndingsI am so excited to FINALLY be reading this most likely amazing anthology full of Asian stories from Asian authors. I have a feeling I’m going to absolutely love this book, especially since I haven’t read an anthology in so long and I miss reading them!!

Also, this cover makes me SO HAPPY. It is so gorgeous and Asian and I’m forever in love with it.

There’s a multitude of rep in this anthology: Filipino, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, South Asian, and Japanese!

(This is also the group book for the Asian Readathon!)

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE

Little Fires EverywhereOkay, I have heard the most amazing things about this book. I’ve read Celeste Ng’s previous book before, and it was so poignant and well-written, and I have reason to believe (aka every glowing review I’ve ever read) that this will be just as poignant and well-written, if not more. I’ve also heard that the audiobook version is really nice too, so I might try it out while reading along in my physical copy?

There’s minor Chinese rep in this book (there is a Chinese baby up for adoption); the author is Chinese!fae divider (2)

DRAGON PEARL

Dragon PearlI really hope I can get a copy of this book from my library in time to read it for the book of the month for the Dragons and Tea Book Club run by my lovely friends Mel @ Mel to the Any and Amy @ A Court of Crowns and Quills! I haven’t been able to read a Rick Riordan Presents book yet, nor a book for the club, so this is the perfect opportunity for both, and I am SO excited.

This book is inspired/based on Korean mythology!!

DESCENDANT OF THE CRANE

Descendant of the CraneYes, shoot me. This book came out a few weeks ago and I’m on the street team and I haven’t finished reading it. I HATE SLUMPING!!

I made it about 100 pages in before I had to put it down. It’s just… a lot of build-up, so it wasn’t enough to hold my attention, in addition to it being an ebook. All of that plus my slump made for not much of an ideal reading experience. To be very honest, I’m not very confident I’ll be able to read it, but I’m putting it on here anyways.

This book is a Chinese-inspired fantasy (all-Asian cast!)

WE HUNT THE FLAME

We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya, #1)I have an eARC of this from being on the street team and it releases in a few weeks, so I’d like to have it read by then! However, if I can’t read it (ebook! maybe slow beginning! fantasy, which is harder to read than contemporary right now!), I will just wait until after release, because a lovely person has preordered it for me.

(I still am not over this cover by the way.)

This book is an Arabian-inspired fantasy (all-Asian cast)!

THE GILDED WOLVES

The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1)It’s about time I read a book by Roshani Chokshi!!!! I’ve been so excited to read this book (I’m not sure how accurate of a comp it is but comparing it to Six of Crows is Definitely compelling) and I think this is the perfect time for it. Diverse cast of characters takes on a heist will always be one of my favorite tropes!!

This book has Indian and (biracial) Filipino rep! (Plus a bunch of other great rep like queer rep, black rep, anxiety rep, autism rep, and Jewish rep. Everyone say thank you Roshani Chokshi.)

A VERY LARGE EXPANSE OF SEA

A Very Large Expanse of SeaOkay, you all know I don’t really have the best relationship with Tahereh Mafi (aka I absolutely HATED Shatter Me), but I think I might actually really love this book!! It seems so beautiful and poignant and important, and I am especially excited for the breakdancing aspect of it. And weirdly enough, the cover has grown on me? (It’s definitely not the most gorgeous book cover out there, though.)

This book features an Iranian-American Muslim main character!

  1. I’ve been very, very, very excited for The Gilded Wolves! It’s rare for me to find a book with BOTH Filipino and Indian rep! I’ve been envious of all the Descendant of the Crane posts on Twitter! Eeeeeh, mine hasn’t arrived yet huhuhu I’m praying for its safe journey!

I’d love to buddy read either Stronger than a Bronze Dragon or A Thousand Beginnings & Endings :)

I would love to buddy read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings! It seems like a great book to BR. DM me on Instagram or Twitter to figure out scheduling! ☺💕

  2. These all look so good! 😃

I’m currently listening to the Astonishing Color of After on audiobook, and I’m enjoying it so far! You’re right, it definitely is a little slow, but I think taking your time reading it really allows you to embrace its beautiful messages and themes.

Little Fires Everywhere is great– It took me a while to get into it, but once I did I was obsessed! It certainly lives up to the hype!

I’m so excited to get my hands on all sorts of books to honor Mental Health Awareness and Asian Pacific Heritage month, so I’d love to do a buddy read with you! I’m dying to read Dragon Pearl and the Gilded Wolves, so I’ll have to find a way to get those on my shelves (which will be a struggle because I too am broke).

Anyways, wonderful post! I’m looking forward to getting some Asian book recs from you!!

    1. I really do think that Astonishing is beautiful, and its slowness doesn’t take away from that at all!! I can’t wait to pick it back up again. And I am so glad you loved Little Fires Everywhere!!

Oh just let me know what you want to buddy read and when! And no worries at all, I have to check out The Dragon Pearl and The Gilded Wolves from my library since I am absolutely broke haha 💕

      1. I’m an annoyingly indecisive person, so all I can say is that I’m up for a buddy read whenever! Do you have an instagram, or some other way we can contact each other about it?

    1. Haha I mean… I’ve already read Girls of Paper and Fire and I’m not planning on rereading so it’s not on my TBR. (But it will be in my recs post!) And oh yes currently I just have not been able to read ebooks, which really limits what I can read!!

  3. May, I loved this post so so much, and it made me so happy! I’m trying to finish Stronger Than A Bronze Dragon this month, and so far it’s really easy to get into, especially because the writing was so readable! The Astonishing Colour of After and A Thousand Beginnings and Endings were such great books that I rated high, and I hope you enjoy them both! Celeste Ng novels, Dragon Pearl and Descendant of the Crane are on my TBR, so I’ll be eagerly awaiting your thoughts on those for sure! I DNFed The Gilded Wolves because I just could not get into it, but I hope you enjoy it more than I did!

I would be definitely interested in doing a buddy read with you, like, the thought of that makes me so excited! I planned a buddy read of A Very Large Expanse of Sea, but it seems like it’s not happening, so I would defo be down for that! Or honestly any Asian book (whether it be here or not) that we would both be down for!

Happiest of reading, and best of luck with this TBR!

    1. Aahh so happy you liked the post!! I hope you liked Stronger than a Bronze Dragon if you finished reading it already — I can’t wait to read it soon. I am 100% sure I’m going to love Astonishing and A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. And I finished The Gilded Wolves a few days ago and honestly I probably was only able to read it because I alternated between the audiobook and ebook haha!

  4. So many great books!! I hadn’t heard of ‘Stronger than a bronze dragon’ but it sounds great and I have added it to my TBR now!! So thank you for bringing in to my attention. A thousand beginnings and endings has been on my radar for a while so I would love to read that– and the cover is beautiful.
I’ve got ‘Descendant of the Crane’ and I am hoping to read it next month and I’ve preordered ‘We Hunt The Flame’ but I don’t know if I will get to it in May– I’m not the fastest reader. I would also love to read the gilded wolves soon– it sounds amazing!!
Great post and happy reading!!! <3

  5. AHHH ahh what a fantastic list, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on… well, ALL of these books. I loved The Astonishing Color of After, it’s true that it’s quite a heavy book, but the writing is absolutely stunning; I hope you’ll love it <3 I have For A Muse of Fire on my TBR, it sounds really good, I hope to read it soon as well. And We Hunt The Flame! SO excited about that one too! Happy reading! And… well, happy MAY month haha (couldn't resist…. sorry.) <3 <3

    1. Aahh I am SO sad I didn’t get around to Astonishing! I’m holding onto hope that I’ll somehow be able to finish that and another book I’m reading in the next few days but I’m not sure it’s possible 😅 And We Hunt the Flame is the book I’m currently reading! Haven’t exactly started it yet but I read a little bit from before and really liked it <3

  6. look at me dropping everything to read your post even tho im studying loads and am supposed to be on hiatus.

a very large expanse of me was meaningful and good but it becomes SO romance-heavy and im just?? while i think everyone will appreciate the messages and themes of it, i think after the first half there’s so much romance it takes away from what the book was about (or maybe it’s because i tend to feel eh about contemp. romances lmao?) i think you’d maybe enjoy it but not love it. i’m seeing loads of people dnf the gilded wolves which makes me V Sad bc i was actually excited for it!! i know i’ve screamed at you about astonishing 4000 times (i’m sorrrrry) but let me know when/if ur picking and i will drop everything to br it with you!! also YAY asian book recs!! IM EXCITED. i lowkey wanna make a TBR for may as a post but IM ON HIATUS why are you being an inspiration. stop it pls.

  7. OOOH, this is such an exciting TBR, May! I personally still need to read Descendant of the Crane and the Gilded Wolves, and I also have We Hunt the Flame and the Dragon Pearl on my May tbr! I honestly have all of these on my to-read shelf, but me and committing to a long TBR is basically a joke. lol. I can’t wait to read your thoughts on all of these, and hope you adore them all! <3

    I hope you have an A-MAY-ZING month! (I couldn't resist) ;)

  8. This is such an amazing post!! 💕
I definitely want to read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings and also The Astonishing Color of After! If you want to buddy read one of those in May, I’d absolutely love it 😍 also, Little Fires Everywhere is sooo good, I think you’re going to like it a lot!

  9. A lot is happening in May and I think you have a fantastic TBR! I’ll be reading only books about mental health this May, though, because I definitely haven’t read enough books about this matter and I really want to. But until the end of the year, I hope to make a themed month, where I only read books by Asian authors. I did this back in February, during Black History Month, and it was a lot of fun. I like the idea that I can read from any genre and format; it definitely feels less overwhelming for someone like me, with a lot of commitment issues, lol.
I do hope you get out of your reading slump soon! If you like romance, The Bride Test by Helen Hoang is coming out early this May and I think a cheesy romance may be perfect for getting you back in the reading game. Wishing you a great reading month! 😊
