Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag: 2019 Edition! (Exposing Myself for All the Rereading I’ve Done This Year)

I’m shocked we’re halfway through 2019 already??

I honestly can’t tell how I’m feeling about the year (depression has completely numbed my mind!!!) but I definitely will say that I was NOT prepared to be halfway done with it already.

Thank you so much to Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books for tagging me to do this! I love doing this tag every year, because I will freak out about books any day of the year, even though this time around I’m just embarrassing myself with my ratio of rereads to non-rereads. (I didn’t allow this!! Why did I do this to myself!!!)

All covers link to their Goodreads page! Note that I chose not to do all the questions.

GENERAL

  • Read books: 42
    • Reread books: 11
    • Webcomics: 7
  • Average rating: 4.02
  • Average rating without rereads: 3.87

(These average ratings are like, pretty high. I’ve been rating books lower recently, though, and I think that’s going to continue, so my average rating will go down—3.7 has been my average for 2017 and 2018. I love slumping!!!)

1. best book you’ve read so far this year

Red, White & Royal BlueI’m sure this will be a VERY popular answer, but this has to go to Red, White & Royal Blue. This book was just… so perfectly written, in all the ways? The writing itself was amazing (especially the HUMOR), the story and plotline were so entertaining, the characters were phenomenal and literally my favorites, and the themes and messages were tactfully written as well.

And also!!! The romance!!!!! It’s super cute, but also just beautiful, and so meaningful in many different ways. Overall, the book just leaves you feeling so much happier and full of hope and I absolutely loved it.

2. new release you haven’t read yet, but want to

I Wish You All the Best  The Mighty Heart of Sunny St. James  With the Fire on High  The Grief Keeper

I meant to read IWYATB and Sunny St. James for Pride, but my library holds expired when I (or more correctly, my mom, since I can’t drive) didn’t pick them up on time, and I didn’t get to check them out. I own With the Fire on High and I have heard the most amazing things about it, and The Grief Keeper seems the exact type of book I would adore!!

3. most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Am I really expected to put just one answer for this?

Ninth House  Girls of Storm and Shadow (Girls of Paper and Fire, #2)  Gideon the Ninth (The Ninth House, #1)  Wilder Girls

These are all books I’m completely willing to pay money to buy if I don’t get an ARC of them, because I am just SO EXCITED FOR THEM. I actually got an ARC of GOSAS just yesterday (AND I AM STILL SCREAMING!!!), and my friend Julianna might be able to send me her copy of Wilder Girls, but I’m definitely going to have to preorder Ninth House and Gideon the Ninth (and honestly? I am OKAY WITH THAT).

As for other books I’m excited for but probably won’t actually buy because I’m broke:

Rebel (Legend, #4)  SLAY  A River of Royal Blood (A River of Royal Blood, #1)  Crier's War (Crier's War, #1)

I love Marie Lu and her books, and I absolutely adore the Legend trilogy. You have know idea how much I SCREAMED when I found out there would be a book 4!! Slay features Black characters in a video game world, which sounds amazing, and A River of Royal Blood features North African characters and magic and assassins and also a gorgeous cover!! And Crier’s War is f/f fantasy. I don’t have to say anything more.

4. biggest disappointment

We Contain MultitudesWe Contain Multitudes is 100% my biggest disappointment! I finished it very recently and was just… really sad about how much it let me down. I actually, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE, wrote a review for it (so you can click on the title to hear my full thoughts!!) but basically, the romance was just full of a lot of yikes things and overall it was a very boring book. I rated it 1.5 stars!

fae divider (2)

5. biggest surprise

We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya, #1)Oh, this one DEFINITELY goes to We Hunt the Flame. In the beginning of the book, I was bored out of my mind and had zero motivation to pick it up and keep reading (I literally fell asleep reading it multiple times), and I was convinced I was just going to hate the book by the end. Instead, I started really enjoying it and ended up having a lot of fun with it? (The shocking plot twists helped as well.) I’m super glad I actually enjoyed it, though, especially considering I was a part of the street team for it!

6. favorite new author

Casey McQuistonOh, Casey McQuiston for sure! I’m super excited for her next book (which is f/f!!) and I can’t wait to read more of their work. I think their writing style/voice is super appealing to me, and I really do believe she’s going to grow to be an ultimate favorite of mine.

7. book that made you cry

Here are the three books I cried over (not including rereads, because then I would have to list another three books and this is embarrassing enough).

King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1)  The Weight of the Stars  Picture Us in the Light

Fun fact: I completely forgot about King of Scars until I looked at my Goodreads shelves (even though I full on sobbed and made this hilarious Goodreads update).

The Weight of Our Sky  Ivy Aberdeen's Letter to the World  Red, White & Royal Blue

And here are the ones that made me tear up!! I actually would have full on cried reading Ivy Aberdeen if I hadn’t been at school and therefore did not want to expose myself for having actual emotions.

8. book that made you happy

It’s truly a bad sign that I can’t really choose any of the books I read this year for this question, because all of them are just… full of pain to some degree?? But I CAN talk about some of my favorite webcomics, because webcomics just make me so happy, especially the ones I read!!

Heir's Game  Castle Swimmer

  • Heir’s Game: I LOVED this author’s other webcomic, Shoot Around, and this one is just so much fun to read updates for because the characters are just absolute dumb gays and it’s hilarious.
  • Castle Swimmer: This webcomic is literally so!! cute!!! There’s one character in particular (Kappa) that I’m in love with, because each time I see him, my heart just melts!!

9. favorite review you’ve written

We are… not going to talk about the abysmally low number of reviews I’ve written this year, okay? I have a limited selection to choose from, but I think my favorite review has to be one I already mentioned, for We Contain Multitudes. It’s the only non-ARC review I’ve written in like, forever, and I think it’s pretty well-written. (Not my MOST well-written but I think I discussed the issues really clearly!)

10. most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars, #1)    With the Fire on High

Okay, I’m putting Spin the Dawn here for its absolutely GORGEOUS cover (I’m in love with it and also in love with Maia on the cover). Then there’s King of Scars, not for its great cover (I don’t despise it but it’s not my favorite) but for it’s beautiful naked hardcover! And finally, With the Fire On High for both its gorgeous cover AND gorgeous naked hardcover!!! (I’m actually working on a drawing over the girl on the cover and it’s very fun.)

fae divider (2)

11. what books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I definitely want to read all the anticipated releases I mentioned by the end of 2019, but here are also some other books I want to (re)read as well:

Legend (Legend, #1)  Descendant of the Crane  The Astonishing Color of After  Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)

I need to reread the Legend series to prepare for Rebel (and prepare for the pain that inevitably comes with every Marie Lu book). I should have read Descendant LONG LONG AGO, considering I was on the street team and got an eARC, and I also should have read Astonishing LONG LONG AGO considering it was one of my most anticipated last year and I actually got an ARC!! And of course, my year wouldn’t be complete without yearly tradition of rereading of Six of Crows (with this rat).

12. favorite book community member

I’m not going to be answering this one, because I’ll be posting my nominations for the 2019 Book Blogger Awards in the coming weeks!! But I’m just taking this opportunity to remind you all that there are officially 3 weeks left for you to submit your nominations for it! Check out the post linked for more information.

I’ve also made an update to how you can nominate bloggers: If you’re anxious about excluding bloggers by having to nominate them publicly, you can submit nominations through this google form! If you are able to write your nominations post, I would truly prefer that, to boost and promote bloggers as much as possible, but I understand that anxiety can get the best of us and I wanted to accommodate for those people!

shall we chat

have you done this tag yet?? (if you haven’t and want to, I officially tag you!!) what are your favorite books of the year so far? any least favorites? and how many books have you reread this year, if any??

  2. OMG MAY I AM SUCH A FAN OF YOUR BLOGGING VOICE. I love seeing people do this tag too! It’s the perfect way to wrap up the first six months of the year! the need to read rw&rb is so great, and I am so impatient to hear back about my copy from book depository :(( I’ve basically been complaining on everyone who’s mentioned the book’s comment sections about the fact that i can’t wait to read rw&rb while I wait for my copy to arrive whelp. I’m also soo happy that you got an arc of GOSaS! nobody deserves it more than you do 💙

  4. Yesss so happy to see you do this tag May! One of my favourites.
I am the same when it comes to rereads – I just can’t help but want to come back to the same worlds so often?! It doesn’t help that I have such high expectations for books on my tbr due to the hype that going for something I know for sure I will love is often easier?
Still, such an amazing amount of books you’ve read! I’ve only read two due to a horrible slump which I’m so annoyed about.
With The Fire on High is an example of a hyped book I am so excited to get to, so I’m so glad to see you loved it! The cover is stunning as well – the main reason I was interested in it haha. Same with Red, White and Royal Blue – so so much hype but seems well deserved!

    1. Aah I agree! This tag is definitely one of my favorites to do.

And yes!! There is so much comfort to be found in books I’ve already read and loved. Too many times this year I’ve found myself not wanting to read any new books and just go back and enjoy old favorites. And aw, thank you so much! Two is still a great number (but I hope you’re able to get over that slump! 💕)

Ah actually I haven’t read With the Fire on High yet, but I’m super excited to! And YES, RW&RB is absolutely amazing — the hype really does not disappoint in my opinion <3

  5. Great choices! I hope you love The Mighty Heart of Sunny St James. That one really surprised me (in a good way). I loved Red, White, & Royal Blue. That was another good surprise. I hope you love all the books you’re looking forward to reading this year.

    1. Aw, thank you so much Faith!! And same, I was so happy when I found out that the naked hardcover for King of Scars was the actual regular edition. (And I actually think I like it more than the gold Illumicrate special edition!)

Thank you so so much! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your reading year <3

    1. OKAY SHUT UP I’ve only talked about not reading Astonishing for like 15 minutes total there’s no way for me to read it in that short amount of time :///

I KNOW!!! I was so surprised I hadn’t heard of Crier’s War earlier, especially with all the f/f book lovers I follow. and I was hyped about Gideon the Ninth but Mel really made me so much more excited about it and I really want to read it fhsdflksd

okay I’m actually going to read The Diviners this year I think, because I want to read more audiobooks and I’ve heard that audiobook is really good!! and ajsdlfkas I really don’t care about The Cruel Prince but I probably will read the rest of the series to find out what happened (also May actually isn’t buddy rereading SoC with me this year so !!! if you want to buddy reread it with me !!!!!!)

  8. Seeing how much you loved RW&RB has gotten me even more excited to read it!! (If that’s possible?? I just keep getting more and more hyped up oops.) I really am so looking forward to finally reading it!! Ahh, just have to wait for one more person to turn it into the library and then I’m next on the hold list.

With the Fire on High has the prettiest cover ever and I love that the book without the jacket has the fruit on it! I always keep the jackets on (I know it’s weird but I use the flap as a bookmark) but if I do end up buying that book then I think I’ll have to take the jacket off.

Ahh, I want to read The Astonishing Color of After! I recently bought it because I had a gift card and it was on sale, but I’ve yet to read it?? This needs to happen asap.

Amazing post as always, I really loved reading your answers!💓

    1. Aahh RW&RB has honestly just been loved by everyone and for good reason! I have no doubt you’ll love it too, and I’m so excited to see your reactions to it haha <3 And ah, I always take the jacket off when I read hardcover books (I never use any form of bookmarks lmao), but this time it'll be an actual nice hardback to look at 😎

Oh, if you're ever looking to buddy read Astonishing, just let me know! I honestly don't know when I'll be in the mood for it but 👀

      1. Ahh, I use bookmarks so much, haha. Do you just memorize the page number? If so, I’m extremely impressed.😂

I’d love to!! I’m hoping to read it semi-soon, like in July or August, so whenever I pick it up I’ll message you. :))

And RW&RB is definitely one of my faves this year so far too! Alex and Henry own my heart. (And I cannot wait for Casey’s next book I NEED)

  11. Ooooooooh I want to read The Grief Keeper as well! It sounds so good. I recently got a copy of Gideon the Ninth, and Wilder Girls! I still need to read We Hunt the Flame and The Weight of our Sky. Oh man, if we got paid for every unread book on our TBR, we could actually afford all the new releases!

I did my tag this week! I hope you’ll check it out. Stay lovely, May. <3

  12. 42 books is quite amazing for the first half of the year, well done! We don’t have a lot of overlap in books, but I honestly love reading about everyone’s favorite and least favorite reads! I am really excited for Gideon the Ninth (they just announced it will have black sprayed edges and I am deceased) and The Crier’s War!

I hadn’t seen the naked cover for King of Scars, and it is GORGEOUS! It’s a shame that I just don’t like Bardugo’s writing style 😭 Happy reading, and re-reading, for the rest of 2019!

    1. Aw, thank you so much, Kal!! And yes, I saw the announcement for Gideon the Ninth and I’m really hoping I can preorder it soon, because those sprayed edges are absolutely GORGEOUS.

And ahh yes, I love the naked cover for King of Scars so much more than the actual cover lmao! I’m sad to hear that Leigh’s writing doesn’t work for you but that’s totally understandable 💖
