2019 Goals Mid-Year Check-In: Am I Failing Miserably or Have I Managed to Surprise Myself?

Hi, I’m May, and I have horrible memory.

I’m going to pretend as if I haven’t already written this entire post and am just now writing this intro, and say: I have no recollection of what my 2019 goals were, except for like two of them.

So today, I’m revisiting these goals I made half a year ago and seeing how well I’m doing on them, and because I have the worst memory and have completely forgotten them all, I have no idea what to expect!!!

[insert me giving a thumbs-up]

(Also this is probably the worst intro I’ve ever written, considering 1) it’s all fake, and 2) it’s in a very different voice from the rest of the post because I’m writing this at midnight and I’m tired, but this is the content you signed up for when you followed my blog!!)

READING

  • Read 100 books. I’m at 44 books right now, and I’m not quite on track for 100 books—Goodreads says I’m 8 books behind, which is just GREAT. But I always manage to get to 100 by the end of the year, because I’m smart and just cram in all my reading in December!!!

  • Actually start writing reviews again! Haha NO. I’ve only written one non-ARC review this year and that was because I wanted to talk about the issues in the book that I didn’t see a lot of other people talking about. But I still do want to get back into the habit of writing reviews for most of the books I read!!
    .
  • Be more organized with ARCs. The only reason I set this goal was because I was horrible with eARCs, and I’ve stopped requesting eARCs because I have a really hard time reading them, so now it’s Completely Irrelevant. Thank you, Completely Useless May Who Can’t Read eARCs!!!!
    .
  • Read more webcomics! YES!!! I’ve fallen more and more in love with webcomics, and I’m so happy I’ve found some amazing ones this year. They just bring me so much happiness (the art! the characters! the stories!) and I might actually make a recommendations post soon if that interests anyone?

WRITING

  • Continue working on my WIP! Yes, and I re-plotted it and have started writing it again! I’ve written 9.7k, and I think I’ll get to 10k, but I don’t think I’m going to continue after I edit it and submit it to a writing contest, because of the next thing:
    .
  • Come up with other book ideas. My brain was so nice and instead of coming up with an idea during the months I had no inspiration, it decided to come up with an idea while I was actually working on something!! But I’m… really excited about this project (as I always am with new ideas) and I think I might write it for NaNoWriMo this year!
    .
  • Write more poetry! Yikes, I haven’t written poetry in forever. I’ve done it sparingly these last few months (the most recent being for one of my finals in May), but definitely not as much as I wanted to.
snippet from the poem I wrote for my English final!!
  • Write 5K in one day. I haven’t actually written in so long and imagining 5K in a day right now is so stressful, but I’ll hopefully be able to do it later in the year?

BLOGGING

  • Reach… 2,000 followers?! My follower count was growing Very Slowly in the beginning of the year (I mean, understandable, I was like nonexistent), but now that I’m getting active again, it’s increasing a lot faster than I expected and I definitely think I’ll be able to reach 2K, which is just so WILD TO ME!!!!
    .
  • Actually interact. AAHHH IMAGINE ME CRYING BECAUSE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I’M DOING!!! I’m so so proud that I’m actually doing this now and I have no plans of stopping!! I’ve missed commenting and all that jazz so much, and doing it again brings me so much happiness.
    .
  • Implement a cool feature or something. “Feature” not quite the right word to use, but I meant some kind of like project—and I did exactly that by hosting the 2019 Book Blogger Awards! 10 days left to nominate your favorite bloggers so GET ON IT.

  • Just. be good to myself. I still feel so so horrible about my lack of interaction, but it’s starting to go away now and I think by the end of the year I’ll be feeling a lot better. Thank you all so much for your support, you make this process so much easier <33

LIFE

  • Practice self-care. Self-care to me means not procrastinating, practicing hygiene, and in general doing things to ensure that my health doesn’t worsen, and to be very honest, I haven’t been doing that!
    .
  • Listen to more music and watch more shows! I’ve been exploring more indie songs and artists this year, and I’ve also watched a few shows that I’ve been meaning to for a long time (One Day at a Time, Queer Eye, The Good Place, Stranger Things, and The Umbrella Academy)!

  • Do more dance stuff! I don’t talk about dance much except in my monthly recaps, but I have been doing more dance stuff! I decided to do a solo this year (which is simultaneously terrifying and exciting), and I also signed up for my first non-obligatory hip hop class, and actually went “full out” instead of holding back. (I’ve never truly gone full out until now because I was insecure/anxious about the reactions to me suddenly not being shy, but I WENT FOR IT and everyone’s surprised but really supportive and AAAHH.)
    .
  • Prioritize my happiness. This is still something I’m learning to do, and it’s hard because sometimes doing one thing might make me happy in the moment but I know I’ll regret it later. But I’m trying!

OVERALL COUNT

reading: 2/4 accomplished!

writing: 2/4 accomplished!

blogging: 2/4 accomplished!

life: 2/4 accomplished!

total: 8/16 accomplished!

8/16 is half my goals completed, and that’s a good sign of me being able to accomplish the rest of them for the last half of the year!! I’m actually shocked by how many I’ve already achieved, considering the fact that I pretty much remembered only two of the goals I set, but I’ll take it!!!

shall we chat

how are you doing on your 2019 goals, if you made any? are you on track with your Goodreads challenge? what TV shows have you watched and do you recommend any??

p.s. my blog now has a sidebar!!! thoughts? (I don’t hate it but I’m not particularly attached to it either lmao, I only made it for navigation purposes)

  1. Wow you’ve done so well with your goals – especially as you have so many!! You should definitely be proud of the work you’ve done this year, May!
YES PLEASE to a webcomics recommendations post! I have seen them mentioned so much this year (especially as I just finished reading Eliza and Her Monsters) so I want to try some! I have absolutely no idea how they work though haha, where do you even read them from??
I didn’t set a GoodReads goal but if I did I would have been VERY behind due to a slump I’ve had since forever (that doesn’t even feel like an exaggeration). I seem to be out of it now though, having read 4 books already in July so hopefully this continues! Not having exams or school is definitely helping though – I’m so happy to have time to myself and to not feel guilty for not studying??
YOUR POETRY SNIPPET WAS SO GOOD WTH. I wish I could write poetry but nope haha. I’m always the same though with writing, I’m either a Sahara desert with no ideas whatsoever or I have so many ideas all at once (what would be the opposite of the desert? Rainforest? lol).
    Loved reading this post May!!💓

    1. Aw, Emme, thank you so much!!! You are too kind to me 😭💕

Ah with the amount of people who’ve expressed interest in a webcomic recommendations post, I think I’m definitely going to write one up! (As for where to find some, Webtoons has a lot of great ones 😉)

Oh no, I’m sorry to hear you were slumping! I’m glad you’re getting out of it though; I’ve started slumping and it’s really terrible and I hate it 😭 But yes, I definitely agree! Being out of school offers so much freedom!!

Omg THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I think my writing is pretty much doing nothing for months, getting briefly excited to write, and then abandoning the project I’m working on for another 😅 I’m so happy you enjoyed reading this post though!! <3

  2. Congratulations on half your blogging goals! That’s amazing. Here’s hoping that the rest of the year is kind and you get through them all.

    I’m rooting for you!

  3. I also have a terrible memory, and your intro made me laugh with its relatability. Look at you being 50% overall on your goals, I think you are doing great and I love that you have be kind to yourself as a goal. Self care and self love are so important, and it is so easy for us to beat ourselves up when it comes to blogging. You are doing great. And if you don’t feel like writing reviews, that’s okay too!

    1. If I elicited a laugh from you, then my job here is done 😎 But ahh thank you so much!! I definitely think taking care of myself is really important (though I truly suck at it most of the time), and self-care is something so many people need to prioritize! And hfdshfsd thank you, you’re too kind 😭💖 I hope you have an amazing rest of your 2019!!

  4. AHHHHH, YOU FINISHED HALF OF YOUR GOALS. YAYYYYYY! *humbly asks the Mango Queen to accept the Cat Lady’s mangos which DO NOT have cat hair on them* Yes, yes, I am very much interested in web comics [despite having not actually read any]. One of my goals is to interact with more bloggers. Like you. And also am I remembering right that your favorite color is pink? ‘Cause I LOVE pink. Especially pale pink. But hot pink is good, too. *gets distracted by thinking of how much more aesthetic pink things are*.
Quick question: would you mind chcking out my blogs? I’m not trying to be pushy, just wanting some more readers, and wanting to know your opinions. If you don’t want to you don’t have to. I won’t be upset.

  5. Please write a webcomic post, I want to read ALL OF THEM.

And yay for finishing up half your goals! I loved that snippet of your poem, btw. Made me feel things, and uh, more snippets of your writing please.

  6. Yayay half is still pretty good!! My goal for this year was 75 books, it’s gone up from last year’s 50 (who am I kidding my initial goal was 100 but that soon became unattainable), it’s proving a challenge but omg haha totally relate I always do all my reading catchup in December. What else is that month for anyway? I’m currently 13 books behind though whoops. And same though I am so bad with eARCs? My new rule is to avoid requesting unless I can get a physical copy… Seems like a bit of a pointless thing but I mean I get credit on NetGalley and I get to read the book in my preferred format? I also submitted something for a writing contest that I worked really hard on, the limit was 3k and on the night it was due I finally got it done and edited to just under 3k so I was just very happy! Oh man as for TV Shows I am an addict but I have a strange taste so my faves are How To Get Away With Murder, Homeland, The Blacklist, Prison Break, and Suits :)

    1. Ahh, thank you, Cas!! And 75 books is a great goal! And oh god, doing all the catch up reading in December really isn’t the best strategy but I’m glad I’m not the only one who does it 😎 But I hope you can catch up soon!! I’d honestly be so much more behind if webcomcis didn’t exist lmao.

And yes! It makes me so sad, because you have a lot more opportunities with eARCs, and I’m so very privileged to still be able to read ARCs, but I really hope I can grow out of these weird can’t-read-eARCs funk. And aahhh SO MANY CONGRATS on submitting to a writing contest!!! That’s amazing and you should be so proud of yourself 💗

  7. Awesome post, May!!! Accomplishing half your goals already is a HUGE success! That’s amazing! I haven’t read ANY webcomics before, but I want to so badly! I have a feeling I would really like that them, but I just haven’t gotten around to reading them. (My logic is flawless) I honestly need to get into a better habit of writing some reviews again as well, and CAN WE PLEASE HAVE MORE SNIPPETS OF YOUR WRITING!? That little piece of poetry was so sweet! I loved it! Also, congrats on going full out in that hip hop class! I used to be the same when I did dance, but I finally threw all caution out to the wind, and felt so much more comfortable with my dancing after that. Haha!

I hope you’re having an awesome July so far! <3

And aahhh, I had no idea you used to dance! It makes me so excited to meet other dancers <3 I'm glad you were able to go more full out and became more comfortable with dancing! I'm still not Completely there yet, but I'm working on it ☺

    1. OH I HAD NO IDEA S3 WAS COMING TO NETFLIX IN AUGUST!!! You just made my night omg (I was able to watch the last 4 eps so I’ve kind of already spoiled myself, but STILL)

And aahh you can Totally go for 100 if you’re at 65 right now!! I mean, I’m aiming for 100 and I’ve read like 20 books less than you 😅😭
