Get to Know Ya Tag: Some Bookish Questions to Get to Know Me a Little Bit Better!!

I don’t even want to look back on when I last did a tag.

A lot of bloggers are bad at remembering to do tags and awards that people tagged them to do, and I’m not excluded!! But I’ve been getting a lot of new followers lately, probably as a result of the Book Blogger Awards and me being much more active again, so I thought, why not do a tag to help people get to know me a little better!

I also was going to post my nominations for the Book Blogger Awards (by the way, GET THOSE IN BY 11:59PM CDT ON JULY 20!!!), but anxiety got the best of me*, and I was running short on post ideas. So it was perfect timing that the lovely Jenna @ Bookmark Your Thoughts tagged me for this! Be sure to check out her post as well!!

*I feel terrible for encouraging people to post their nominations and not doing that myself, but I think as a host it might be better—both in general and for my anxiety—not to do them publicly in case people think I’m showing bias towards the people I nominate!!! I’m obviously not, but every time I think about posting my nominations, I just get filled with a terrible fear that people will think I’m rigging it!!!!!

1. favorite book of all time

I’m highly indecisive and also your typical reader, meaning I CAN’T choose a favorite book of all time!! So here are six books (yes, six, I’M SORRY) from my Goodreads favorites shelf: three hyped, three lesser known.

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)  Radio Silence  The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Girl Made of Stars  When the Moon Was Ours  Picture Us in the Light

2. favorite book five years ago

Somehow, despite my terrible memory, I think I know what my favorite was five years ago, but I’m going to talk about it in the next question and don’t want to repeat myself so:

3. favorite duology/trilogy/series

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)If I wasn’t trying not to repeat books, you all know I would have chosen Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. Instead, this one goes to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which is the ULTIMATE series of my heart, because it’s such a big part of my childhood!!

I read the series when I was… 8 years old?? And I was just in love with it every age after that. It was the first series I became truly obsessed with, and it introduced me to fandom (which led me to YA!), and I still love it so so much. Like, I love it to the point that I’m almost tearing up writing this!!!

fae divider (2)

4. last book you read

Her Royal Highness (Royals, #2)I just finished Her Royal Highness, which I read with my lovely friends Lily and Melanie!! It was… disappointing, to say the least. It was fun and fluffy and I did somewhat enjoy it, but the lack of development, abruptness of the writing, and the weird pacing just threw me off so much. But at least… gay princess??

fae divider (2)

5. last poetry book webcomic you read

EmpyreaThe original question was poetry book (as you can obviously read), but because I haven’t read one this year, I decided to make it more relevant to me and do a webcomic instead!!

The last webcomic I read was Empyrea, which I enjoyed and has nice art! I’m really invested in the characters already, and I’m excited to see where the story goes with the truly glorious soul-eating monster beast things.

Also, after seeing your excited responses to me asking you all whether or not you wanted to see a webcomic rec post, you can DEFINITELY expect one from me in August!!!

6. what book most influenced your life?

StarfishStarfish is another all-time favorite of mine It just… means so so much to me as an Asian reader, and I don’t think I could ever forget this book. I don’t even know how to explain how it spoke to me, but just the way it discussed Asianness and beauty and how being Asian affects how you see yourself made me feel so, so seen.

fae divider (2)

7. book that made you ugly cry

The Song of AchillesThe first time I read The Song of Achilles, I didn’t tear up until the last 10%. And then at the last sentences (if you’ve read, you know it)… well, here’s what I wrote in a post about it: “I sobbed for a full 10 minutes before having to get up from my bed and take a walk, only to lie back down and stay awake crying and thinking about the book for an hour. Fun times.”

Anger Is a GiftAnd I can’t forget the book that made me cry the most last year!! Anger is a Gift is absolutely brutal but so so beautiful, and I wish I could shove it in everyone’s hands. There’s one scene that I just started sobbing over, and I couldn’t stop crying for the next 30 minutes as I kept reading the book. I cried a lot more after finishing the book and Actually woke up with swollen eyes!!!

8. book that made you laugh

Red, White & Royal Blue  The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1)  Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

I’m going to steal Jenna’s answer for this one: Red, White & Royal Blue made me laugh SO many times out loud. It captured modern humor the best out of any book I’ve read, and it appeals to my exact sense of humor and I LOVE IT!!

And because I’m Riordan trash, the Magnus Chase series was also so so funny. I’m definitely rereading this next year (hi May), because I didn’t appreciate it enough my first time around (I rated the first book only 3 stars HOW??). Magnus and Alex are comedic legends and I love them!!

And also, just to mix it up, a book I laughed over because it was just SO BAD is Shatter Me!!! The metaphors in this book were ridiculous to me, and there were so many scenes that I thought were so absurd that I had to laugh. (Also, the cover makes me laugh.)

fae divider (2)

9. character you’d like to be for the day

I have a lot of favorite book characters, but I don’t think I’d ever really want to BE one?? But if I had to be gay on main… being Renee Walker from The Foxhole Court or Ella Malikova from Gemina would be cool because I’m in love with them!!!!!

10. book so good you dreamt about it

Okay so this isn’t really an answer to this question, but I HAVE 2 STRANGE BOOK-RELATED DREAMS AND I’M GOING TO TELL THEM BOTH. (My dreams in general are honestly so weird and I have so many good ones I could share, but I won’t, as not to scare off my new followers.)

yes this is my new favorite image

First up is my favorite: I dreamt I was going surfing with Percy and Annabeth… after watching The Lightning Thief movie. I also distinctly remember the feeling of clutching my sheets and lifted my legs up in the air as I was “surfing”. I have terrifying dreams. This dream also somehow morphed into me and Kate, a character from The Mysterious Benedict Society, running away from Ten Men (the villains) and hiding behind cars in a car dealership!!

My second book-related dream is short: I dreamt that I was being killed by Kaz Brekker. No detail. Just saw Kaz holding a knife, coming at me, and then that was it.

fae divider (2)

11. book you DNFed

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1)The most memorable book I didn’t finish was The City of Brass. Ah, I can hear the entire world sighing as I say this, because they know what’s about to come out of my mouth!!

I made it just over halfway through the book (353 pages, to be exact) after 19 days of trying to read it. It was literally so. boring. Dreadfully, DREADFULLY boring. I’m very bitter about it, because I went in expecting it to be a 5-star read, and it just was… so not. (1 star babyyy.)

fae divider (2)

12. what book are you most excited to read?

Ninth HouseGideon the Ninth (The Ninth House, #1)My 2 most anticipated books for the last half of 2019!!: Ninth House and Gideon the Ninth.

I feel like these are the perfect choices for this tag, if you want to get to know my taste in books. Both of these are fantasies (Ninth House being an urban fantasy), and both of them are somewhat dark—I think Ninth House is more disturbing because it involves cults, while Gideon the Ninth has necromancy! Gideon also is apparently hilarious and features lesbians, so like… give me.

I TAG YOU!

  1. omg I laughed out loud when you described your dream simply as Kaz coming to kill you with a knife!! HAHA I always have bookish dreams when I find myself REALLLY invested in a book (this also happens w TV shows too) but also if I binge read a book in day day… chances are they could end up in my dreams too?!? *shoulder shrug* Amazing post May! 🙂

    1. Honestly, I woke up SO confused from that Kaz dream lmao! And I rarely have bookish dreams but when I do, they are (clearly) wild 😎 But it makes sense that being really invested in books/shows makes you dream of them! And thank you so much, Jamie!! 😭💗

  2. I’m finally reading Six of Crows!!! I’m so so excited. Ahhh Percy Jackson is such a throw back. I need to move onto Heroes of Olympus soon (if I can ever get to it with all my other TBRs XD). What did you think of the Magnus Chase series? I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions in it. Anyways great post May! I enjoyed getting to know more about you! 🙂

    1. Oh, I hope you LOVE Six of Crows!!! And I hope you can get to read Heroes of Olympus soon — it’s definitely a great series if you love PJO ☺ And I loved Magnus Chase! I actually didn’t love the series as much when I started out, but I was absolutely in love with it by the end and am rereading it next year ☺

  3. Awe yay! I’m glad you had a chance to do this! And really … I don’t think many of us can remember the book we loved 5 years ago … I barely remember yesterday!

I’m reading “Her Royal Highness” right now. So far, it’s okay. I’m hoping to enjoy it more but if not, I’m glad it’s a light and fluffy read ha-ha!

I’ve never read a webcomic … totally checking this one out!!

What an epic post! You did a lovely job!

  4. HELLO STOCK IMAGE LADY WE MEET AGAIN…

Thank you for tagging me in this and I do feel like I got to know your bookish tastes a little better (though many of these were also pretty expected LOL) I’m pretty positive that I’ve also dreamt about Percy Jackson before beause it’s just THAT good. and tho I liked Shatter Me when it first came out I could defintiely see where you’re coming from. I remember seeing the language being so flowery and overly lyrical. Fun tag, May!!

Okay fhsdhfshd you didn’t have to CALL ME OUT on my predictability like that!!!! Also… I feel like I knew you liked PJO but totally forgot until right now? (Who’s your favorite character 👀) And yeah, I think Tahereh’s writing is nice, and I didn’t mind the lyrical-ness of it, just the… really wild metaphors lmao. LOVE YOU!!

  5. Ouh that’s a nice tag!

Omg, my dreams are so wierd too 😂 specially the ones from the last two days.. but I haven’t had any book related in a while. I used to dream that I was literally holding a book and reading said book!

Radio silence was the best ❤️ Shame I didn’t picked it up earlier! And starfish still remains on my tbr..

    1. Aahh thank you! And ooh what were your weird dreams in the past few days 👀 And oh wow, that’s such a weird dream! I don’t think I’ve ever dreamt I’m reading a book, but probably because my dreams are a lot wilder than that haha.

I love Radio Silence so so much! And I hope you get to read Starfish soon, it’s so beautiful 💕

  6. this is such a fun tag, may! i just finished rereading american panda via audio (i gotta add to my YARC read pile) and it was so cute and fun!! and proudly asian ofc, we love it! i’m very happy that you consider evelyn hugo an all time fave, my inner evelyn stan self is screaming! your book related dreams are iconic and i LOVE THEM. also, i’m literally so excited for ninth house i could actually scream. i was gonna buy the physical copy but i hate the cover so i’m probably gonna read it as an ebook or via my library? I DON’T KNOW. i ugly cried over darius (i read it from your rec) and i started tearing up a little at all the ways home by elsie chapman (my current read), which was fun! i might have to steal this, because this tag seems like a bunch of fun 🙂 happy reading, may!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh, I’m so glad you loved American Panda!!! It’s definitely a book I’ve been wanting to read for forever but haven’t gotten the chance to. And yes I love Evelyn SO MUCH and there’s no way it couldn’t be an all-time fave of mine!

Okay Taasia that is EXACTLY how I feel about Ninth House??? I was so confident I wanted a physical copy of my own, but the more I look at the cover, the more I realize I just… don’t love it lmao. (Also my mom would be terrified of it.) But I also think I might really love it AND it’s Leigh so… aghahghds.

And AAHH every time you talk about Darius and mention that you read it because of me, I get so emotional! And yes, please do this tag!!! I would love to see your answers 💖

  7. I completely ugly-cried over Darius and Ari and Dante. They are all so heartbreaking and aahhh I can’t deal. Also Kaz coming to kill you is actually one I’ve had too… it was after rereading SoC and having to stop at the part where he faces the entire Dregs on his own… probably a bad idea now I look back haha.
Thank you so much for tagging me! I’ll try to get to it ASAP. x

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh my god, I cried over Darius, and I just SOBBED over Ari and Dante. I just felt those books so so deeply as a depressed gay 😭😭 And lmao! It actually makes sense for your dream to have been because you recently read that part! My Kaz dream just came out of nowhere 😅

And of course! No pressure at all to do the tag 💕

      Liked by 1 person

      1. YES just relating to them was heartbreaking. After this conversation I literally dreamt about Inej on the roof with Dunyasha (idek how to spell that too complicated) so… WHAT IS THIS TELLING ME.

Okay that actually means the world bc I remember looking up to you when I was a young smol bean of a blogger and wanting to comment and interact but anxiety. Then I did and just ahh it makes my day whenever I get a comment from you xx

  8. I don’t think I’ve read a lot of these books! That is a terrifying dream btw, Kaz coming to kill you.

The last book I read was Hunted by Meagan Spooner. Literally just finished the audiobook today!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Aahh, I hope you get to read a few of these books soon! Pretty much all of them are ones I love ❤ And I don't think I was terrified of Kaz, I remember just being briefly excited to see him before he killed me 😅

Oh, I hope you enjoyed Hunted! I've heard mixed things about it haha!

  9. Ahhh I loved reading your answers! I am currently rereading Percy Jackson, and it’s bringing up so many nice and warm nostalgic feelings for me too! And I actually had the exact same feelings about Magnus Chase but I am sure I must have been in some kind of trance when I gave it 3 stars. And putting Shatter Me as a book you laughed at? ICONIC. (that book is a mess)!
Thank you so much for the tag, I am really excited to answer these questions 😊

    1. AAAHHH YOU’RE REREADING PJO!!! (I’m screaming because I may or may not be currently dying to read it right now) And honestly I truly have no idea how I rated Magnus Chase 3 stars and then ended up just LOVING the series in the end? The books are so entertaining and funny, was I okay 😅 And I saw your post earlier today and I’m so excited to read your answers! 💖

  10. Awesome tag, May! Oh my gosh, I relate to you SO MUCH with the Percy Jackson series! I read the books when I was 11 (?) and that one, along with the Hunger Games trilogy, introduced me to YA, and I haven’t looked back since! That Kaz Brekker dream sounds terrifying, but I mean, if I had to murdered by someone, at least it’s Kaz. Hahahaha! I also DNF’d City of Brass after the half way point too! I tried for 3 weeks to finish it, but I just couldn’t! So glad it’s not just me!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Aw, thank you, Kelly! And aahhh, I just love PJO so much!! Both for the nostalgia, and for leading me to YA. (And omg… I still haven’t read the Hunger Games 😅😅) And lmao! I think in my Kaz dream, I got excited to see him right before he killed me, but it definitely sounds terrifying. Oh, I’m so glad to hear you DNFed City of Brass like I did!! It just did Not work for me 😭

  11. I love your answers, May! I couldn’t pick a favorite book either, but I love your selection and it makes me happy to see Radio Silence here ❤ I can't WAIT to read Picture Us In The Light, it sounds so good and I'm sure I would love it ❤ ❤

    1. Aaah, thank you so much, Marie!! And yes, I love Radio Silence and I really need to reread it 😭💖 And oh, whenever you end up picking up Picture Us in the Light, I am so excited to see what you think of it! I also think you’re going to love it ❤

  12. i am LAUGHING OUT LOUD at the kaz brekker dream b/c it’s a whole ass MOOD™
honestly if kaz brekker wants to murder me, he caught ME slipping and that’s ON ME.

b/c everything i do is topsy turvy, i read the heroes of olympus series before percy jackson so i’m more invested in those characters than the og series BUT the end line is that rick riordan is the true king of our childhood and we have decided to stan

may i recommend this webtoon called ‘let’s play’ // it’s honestly SO GOOD and funny and creative, you’ll love it. can’t wait for the web comic post!

also YES to rwrb. that book is my answer to every positive book related question.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Honestly, I felt HONORED Kaz was killing me. My king, giving me that kind of attention? Unbelievable.

And aahh I think I’m more invested in the HOO characters as well! But tbh, Percy and Annabeth will always be my favorites (and that’s probably because of PJO haha). And lmao Rick Riordan is the Only white man I trust.

Oh THANK YOU for the webcomic rec!! Very much appreciated ❤

  13. Yay, I love posts like this, and this one is no exception!! This was so fun to read.💖✨

I HAVE READ 5/6 of your all-time favorites and I’m so happy about that! The ones I have read have been really excellent- SOC, Evelyn Hugo, and Radio Silence may also be making their way into my all-time faves, too. I did really like GMOS though, and even though I liked When the Moon Was Ours less than Blanca & Roja, it was still a good read for sure.

Okay, yes, Percy Jackson will always have my heart. I can seriously never get over the characters and how adorable they are and how genuinely funny it is!! (Was I the only one who also felt so smart in school whenever Greek mythology came up because I had read Percy Jackson and felt like I was some kind of mythology expert, lol…oh, middle school Olivia.😂)

I just finished Anger is a Gift and I think I know what scene you’re talking about? I was seriously not expecting that AT ALL (if it’s the same scene) and I was in the car with my parents so I couldn’t really cry but I’m pretty sure I gasped and my heart literally dropped into my chest because WHAT WHAT WHAT WHY WHY DID THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN.

HAHA, the dream running from the Ten Men is everything. Wow, I love the MBS so much, it’s so nostalgic for me and I reread it last month and realized just how truly well-written it is!

    Lovely post! <33

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah, I’m so happy you enjoyed the post, Olivia!! I’m so happy you loved my favorite books so much too — and aah I loved Blanca y Roja too! I read When the Moon was Ours a while back, I think, so I don’t 100% remember it and might have to reevaluate if I reread it 😅

I’m pretty sure all us PJO fans thought ourselves to be the smartest in the room when Greek mythology was brought up lmao! (Although there are a few times when Rick changing the mythology a little has gotten me a little confused 😎) But I genuinely love PJO so much — the story and the characters are just everything to me.

YES YOU PROBABLY KNOW THE SCENE IN ANGER IS A GIFT!! It was just so shocking and it felt like a sucker punch to the gut. And aahh I’m so happy you love MBS so much — I always look back so fondly on the Ten Men dream even though it’s not really something to look back fondly on haha!

      Liked by 1 person

  14. wow okay, i am so shocked that you’ve had so many vivid dreams and can still remember them so clearly! i have the *worst* dream memory and i typically forget about them the second i wake up, so i don’t think i’d have an answer for that. still, i think it’s really nice you remember them and the dream with percy & annabeth sounds really fun, though the one with kaz sounds terrifying.
i totally relate with percy jackson being a childhood favorite and very much a life-changer. rick riordan just takes up A LOT of my life and i’m really looking forward to re-reading the magnus chase series at some point. it’s hilarious and absurd at times, but i love the characters a lot. they’re definitely my favorites – apart from the original percy jackson & the olympians crew, ofc.
awesome tag, may! (i loved the stock image of that girl in the blue shirt btw made me laugh out loud).

    1. I honestly have really weird dreams and that’s why I remember them so well lmao! The dream with Percy and Annabeth was probably my wildest dream so I remember it a lot lmao. And yes, Rick Riordan’s books just means so much to me? They break me, but they can make me so, so happy 😭 I’m so so excited to reread Magnus Chase next year! I had so much fun reading the books and the characters are so precious. And LMAO YES I love that stock image too and I’m glad you found it funny too 😎

  15. This is a great post and a great intro for someone who has just discovered your blog (hi!)
Six of Crows and Radio Silence are also personal favourites of mine, but truthfully I’d devour anything either author wrote. Starfish is another absolute favourite of mine. The way it dealt with anxiety was super relatable and it’s honestly and beautifully written.
I haven’t actually ugly cried over a book in a long while! Sadie by Courtney Summers made me tear up a little at the end both because of the story itself, and because my reading (technically listening – the audiobook is excellent) experience was over and I had to be satisfied with never knowing more, which is the first time I’ve had that specific experience when reading before. As for ugly crying? That would have to be A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews. Which I read over a year ago! I’m definitely in need of more ugly crying material. For now, Queer Eye is my substitute (though that’s more of a happy ugly cry!).
    Fab post, May!

    1. Ah thank you so much Helia!! (Hi to you as well!! 💛)

Yes same — I love Leigh and Alice’s writing styles both so much. And I’m glad you could relate to the anxiety rep in Starfish! It’s just such a beautiful book, both in its themes and messages, and also its writing ❤

I'm currently reading Sadie (on audio since SO many people loved it!) and I'm really excited to read more of it! I've heard a lot of amazing things about it and I"m glad you were so emotionally touched by it as well. And aahh I still need to read A Thousand Perfect Notes!! But yes, Queer Eye makes me cry too 😭

  16. I love evelyn hugo and six of crows!! And song of achilles definitely made me cry! I’m glad to hear red white and royal blue made you laugh- definitely want to check it out. I really struggled with city of brass as well tbh- I did make it to the end, but it’s not a favourite and I didn’t continue with the series, cos the middle sagged way too much for me. Awesome answers!

    1. I’m pretty sure The Song of Achilles made everyone cry!! It’s just so… heartbreakingly beautiful, especially with Madeline Miller’s prose 😭 And oh, I’m glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who struggled with City of Brass! It definitely was super hard to get through — I’m surprised you made it through the whole thing 😅
