My August TBR, aka Books My Friends Have Yelled at Me to Read (I’m Finally Listening to Them)

I’m quite horrible at sticking to TBRs.

I’m very much a mood reader, and especially now that I’m going through a bad reading slump. However! I’ve been planning a month like this, where I read several of the books my friends have made me want to pick up, and August was the month I randomly decided on, so here’s my TBR for it!

It’s not a very long TBR, because these are the only books that I know I’ll be able to get a copy of (I have plenty more books people have been yelling at me to read, it’s terrifying). And I also go back to school on August 8 so [zoom in on my unamused face] I will die if I read too many books.

Foolish HeartsClearly I’ve been doing something wrong if this many people have been dying for me to read this but look!!! I got it okay!!!! I’m doing it now!!!!!

I’ve heard such great things about all of Emma Mills’ books, so I’m really excited to read this one. It’s a crime that I keep forgetting that this book has sapphic characters and instead thinking that it’s a very heterosexual book (when in fact, the phrase “Straighty McHetero” was used in it, which I honestly don’t think I will ever get over).

I honestly think I’m going become an Emma Mills fan with this one, and I can’t wait to read it! (And if I don’t become a fan, I WILL be mad because she’s graced with the most gorgeous book covers ever.)

Far from the TreeAnother recommendation from May because… she is doing her god-given duty and cursing me with more books to add to my TBR.

This is also? for some reason?? another book I keep forgetting has sapphic rep??? I have no idea why I keep forgetting this, because I truly die for f/f rep in books, but my brain is just failing me constantly now, I guess.

I actually tried to pick this one up last year… but it didn’t go so well. In fact, I didn’t read a single word of it. But!! I’ll try this time. Maybe. Especially since now that I remember it’s f/f!! And features a lot of family!!!!

Ace of Shades (The Shadow Game, #1)(I’m pretty sure I made a promise to Ilsa that I wouldn’t read this book in case I hated it but… oops.)

I actually have no idea whether or not I’m going to like this one, and I’m usually pretty good at predicting! I really did Not like this author’s debut, but it’s been compared to Six of Crows and you all know I love that book? Predictions aside, I really hope I like this, lest Ilsa and Julianna kill me!!

(I have to say, though, I mucking hate made-up curse words and I know they’re going to torment me in this book.)

SadieI don’t think Mel or Elise ever actually screamed at me to read this book, but I know it was on their 2018 favorites list, and I trust both of their book opinions with my entire soul. I’ve just heard phenomenal things about this book in general, and I have a feeling I’m going to absolutely adore it.

Also funny story, I used to always get Courtney Summers mixed up with Colleen Hoover when I didn’t know either of them that well (I DON’T KNOW WHY OKAY), and I would just like to take a moment to apologize to Courtney Summers for even associating her with Colleen Hoover.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)Another rec from both Mel and Elise because they are just that powerful!! Gays in space will never cease to be one of my favorite things ever, and combine that with one of my favorite tropes ever, found family? I am instantly sold.

I’m also, for some reason, in an adult book kick, so I think this will be a nice addition to that! Even though the size of it is VERY intimidating to me. (And unfortunately, the cover I featured here is the edition I own, since I couldn’t find the nicer-looking cover anywhere.)

SolitaireWhen I saw Romie’s 24hr Alice Oseman Readathon announcement, I knew it would be the perfect chance for me to finally read Solitaire! I’ve loved all of Alice’s Oseman’s works, especially Radio Silence, and knowing that my friend Lily loved this book the most out of all her books makes me more confident I’ll love it.

I’m not actually sure I’ll be able to get a copy by August 10th to read it for the readathon, and the 10th is also Pride in my local city (which I’m not sure if I’m going yet but hope to!), so we’ll see how it all plays out, but I still hope to read it later in the month if not on the 10th!

In my Am Currently Update post, I talked about how I was in a reading slump and that buddy reads were pretty much the only things that were getting me to read. Some people expressed interest in buddy reading books with me (hello I love you and you are my SAVIOR), so here are other books I’m hoping to read this month! Feel free to let me know if you want to buddy read any with me!!

If We Were Villains  Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)  SLAY

  • If We Were Villains: Actually, this is a book I tried to read this month, but because the universe hates me, my slump made it really hard for me to read it. As in, I read 50 pages after 5 days of trying. But I really hope I finish this in August because!! theatre gays!!!!
  • Every Heart a Doorway: I’ve been meaning to get into Seanan McGuire books for SO LONG, and it feels like everyone loves them? So when I saw that my library had this available as an audiobook, I knew I had to read it, because audiobooks help me a lot with my reading and it’s perfect timing.
  • SLAY: OH LOOK IT’S ME WITH ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASES!!!! I honestly didn’t expect much when I filled out the request form, but I’m getting it from Simon & Schuster and GOD BLESS. I’m also really happy because the author is going to go the book fest I went to last year and plan to go again to this year, so I might be able to meet her and get my ARC signed!!
  • okay that’s all I got I suck at TBRs

shall we chat

are there any books you’re planning to read in August? or any books your friends have yelled at you to read? what books do YOU want to yell at me to read right now??

  1. May!!! 💕 so many INCREDIBLE books on your list!!!👏🏻

I still have to read many of them myself, but they sound SO good. Above all, If We Were Villains, I’ve heard the best things about it.

I hope you enjoy your readings and have the most beautiful month, honey, you deserve it 😊💫💪🏻🌻

  2. Oh, I hope you really enjoy Sadie! I listened to it on audiobook and I love it! 😊 I’m also hoping to read Long Way to a Small Angry Planet soon, but who knows? Maybe not. I’m an extreme mood reader and I only read what I feel like in the moment! That’s why I rarely ever stick to TBR lists.

My TBR is just the 200 books on my Goodreads shelf. 😂 And my friends don’t really yell at me to read anything – it’s usually me who does that to myself!

    1. Ah thank you so much! I’ve actually heard a lot of amazing things about Sadie, so I might check out the audiobook to listen to and follow along in my physical copy ☺ And agh I SUCK at TBRs and I’m pretty sure I won’t be getting around to at least a few of these books, but I think forcing myself to follow a TBR would be better for my slump than mood reading (because I’m in the mood to read… nothing 🙈)

  3. I’ve already read Sadie and I don’t think I loved it as much as others but it was still really really good! The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is also on my TBR, & I would love to read it because I don’t read enough scifi and fantasy books! Also, Far from the Tree keeps being recommended to me as an underrated book and I’m really interested now, so I’m very excited to hear your thoughts on it. Also, I’ve been dying to read If We Were Villain and I’m so up for a buddy read 💜💜💜 this comment is really long already, but omg don’t feel bad for being in a reading slump/not reading these books. I put 6 books on my July TBR and I only read one of them, and am not even 10% through another one 🙂

    1. Ah I’m glad you liked Sadie, even if it wasn’t as much as other people liked it! And lmao SAME, I really need to start reading more sci-fi books, I love them so much but just never get around to them? And omg yes I would love to buddy read If We Were Villains! I think I’m going to force myself to read it first thing August if that’s all right? (We can definitely DM on Twitter! 💗) And aahhh I’m trying really hard not to feel bad for reading so little, but it’s hard 😭

  4. omg i loved far from the tree and ace of shades.
i actually read far from the tree on a tech-free study trip in australia and it was really comforting to just snuggle up with a book and forget about the internet for a while – the book was so heartwarming and i loved seeing the characters bond and support each other. it made me feel so happy – 100% would recommend this experience ahahaha – just find an armchair and curl up with the book. i really hope you’ll like it as much as i did!

    1. Oh, that sounds like such a fun experience! I’ve been really bad at staying focused on my reading so I often have to just leave all my electronics in one room and then go read in another, so I definitely will try it out with Far From the Tree like you did ❤ I'm so happy you loved the book!!

  5. Ace of Shades I literally just bought today and I’m planning on reading it in August – I heard so many positive things about the authors debut (although I know you said you didn’t like it) so I’m excited! The premise sounds amazing too.
SLAY is also on my tbr although I actually cannot remember what it’s about. I just remember being recommended it and thinking it sounded really good so! 🙂

    1. Aaahhh I hope you love Ace of Shades!! The premise really does sound amazing — and haha, don’t let my opinion of Daughter of the Burning City deter you! I feel like I personally just don’t click with her writing style so I’m a little nervous to read Ace 😳

And yes!! SLAY sounded so good — as soon as I heard “black gamer world” I added it to my TBR immediately 😎

and yes we should BR Far From the Tree!!! (I also told someone else I could BR with them, she said she knew you and we could do a group chat if you’re comfy? her name’s Nadhira!! but if you wanna keep it separate I’m fine with that lmao)

  6. Yes, May, put Foolish Hearts on your TBR! it’s so good and cute and just one of my all-time fav contemporaries!!! 💕 Also, Ace of Shades is one of my all time fav steampunk fantasy series, so I hope you love it! Sadie is HARD reading but it does make you think.
I read a WHOLE lot in July so now i have no idea or plan of what to read in August and yikes, maybe I’m now having an existential bookworm crisis??????

    1. Honestly everyone seems to adore Foolish Hearts so I’m really excited to read it and join all the people who love it! And ahh I really hope I love Ace of Shades too, I’m afraid I won’t but I’m holding out hope 😭 And noo I’m sorry to hear about not knowing what to read in August!! I hope you figure it out soon ❤

  7. oooh i’m participating in the alice oseman readathon too! i’ll be reading radio silence. i also read if we were villains and lovedddd it!! i don’t have a set tbr for august, but i think i want to read don’t date rosa santos, with the fire on high, and sorcery of thorns!

  8. omg omg omg ACE OF SHADES ok but it’s actually really good tho. like seriously

also i feel mean saying this but foolish hearts literally has one of the ugliest covers in the world

  9. Ahh, good luck with your August TBR!! It looks like you have a lot of great books ahead of you.💖

Omg I really hope you love Foolish Hearts?? (Now I’m lowkey scared to see your thoughts because I don’t want to have hyped it up too much for you, ahh. But seriously. It’s really good.) I reread it this month and no joke teared up three different times because of how much I loved it.🙃Some might say I’m obsessed…anyway, please let me know your thoughts as/when you’re done reading!!

I haven’t read any of the other books you mentioned here, but Sadie and Far From the Tree are both on my TBR and look really good. Happy reading!!

    1. Aahh thank you so much, Olivia!! And I’m actually super confident that I’m going to love Foolish Hearts? It sounds like a book that will just warm my whole heart and soul, and also so many of my friends (including you!) have loved it 😍 And yes, I’ll definitely let you know my thoughts!!

  10. Ahhhh I adore Foolish Hearts! It’s so cute and fluffy and fun! (Straighty McHetero gets me every time I think about it omfg)
And I’m… scared of what you’ll think of Ace of Shades. I personally think it’s a lot stronger than Daughter of the Burning City, but ahhhhh I hope you don’t hate it! … the fake curse words drive me crazy tho omfg I hate them. (And pls don’t go in expecting it to be anything like SoC they aren’t even comparable) (or similar tbfh)

Also – I would love to buddy read something with you if you wanted! I desperately need to read If We Were Villians and Solitaire 👀👀

    1. Foolish Hearts is just such a well-loved book that I’m wholly confident I’m going to love it (and I’m going to be SO sad if I don’t). And fhdshfsd I’m really scared for Ace of Shades too because I have a feeling I’m either going to despise it or just not care about it at all, which aren’t the best opinions to have about a book lmao. (And I’ve heard that it’s not like SoC and honestly not surprised!! People need to stop comparing everything to SoC — though to be fair I do it all the time too lmao)

Yes!! I would love to BR Solitaire with you!!! Just DM me on Twitter (though idk when I’ll be able to get a copy haha)

  11. Came across your blog through the awards, and I’m so glad I did! I look forward to catching up on some of your older posts, but for now I’ve got to say – you have some pretty amazing books lined up. Though this post also reminds me that I still haven’t read Every Heart a Doorway, and that definitely is one book that many of my friends have yelled at me for not having read. Someday, someday.. hopefully soon though.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Aahh you are so so sweet!! 😭💗 And oh god I know — Every Heart a Doorway has just been a book I feel like so many of my friends with similar tastes have read and loved, so I feel the pressure to read it (and love it) as well 😅 I hope you get around to it soon and enjoy it!!

      Liked by 1 person

  12. Ace of Shades is good BUTTTTT I would go in with lower expectations than Six of Crows. I think it’s kind of dumb they marketed that way because people’s expectations were so high. Sure it’s about street gangs and has some similarities, but yeah, if you absolutely LOVE SoC just lower those expectations for AoS hahah

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah I’ve been hearing from people that it’s nothing like Six of Crows so I definitely will be keeping that in mind! I feel like people just hear one thing about a book and compare it to Six of Crows and it’s not good marketing 😳 But thank you!! ❤
