My August TBR, aka Books My Friends Have Yelled at Me to Read (I’m Finally Listening to Them)

I’m quite horrible at sticking to TBRs.

I’m very much a mood reader, and especially now that I’m going through a bad reading slump. However! I’ve been planning a month like this, where I read several of the books my friends have made me want to pick up, and August was the month I randomly decided on, so here’s my TBR for it!

It’s not a very long TBR, because these are the only books that I know I’ll be able to get a copy of (I have plenty more books people have been yelling at me to read, it’s terrifying). And I also go back to school on August 8 so [zoom in on my unamused face] I will die if I read too many books.

FOOLISH HEARTS

recommended by: May, Emma, Olivia, and Dezzy

Foolish HeartsClearly I’ve been doing something wrong if this many people have been dying for me to read this but look!!! I got it okay!!!! I’m doing it now!!!!!

I’ve heard such great things about all of Emma Mills’ books, so I’m really excited to read this one. It’s a crime that I keep forgetting that this book has sapphic characters and instead thinking that it’s a very heterosexual book (when in fact, the phrase “Straighty McHetero” was used in it, which I honestly don’t think I will ever get over).

I honestly think I’m going become an Emma Mills fan with this one, and I can’t wait to read it! (And if I don’t become a fan, I WILL be mad because she’s graced with the most gorgeous book covers ever.)

FAR FROM THE TREE

recommended by: May

Far from the TreeAnother recommendation from May because… she is doing her god-given duty and cursing me with more books to add to my TBR.

This is also? for some reason?? another book I keep forgetting has sapphic rep??? I have no idea why I keep forgetting this, because I truly die for f/f rep in books, but my brain is just failing me constantly now, I guess.

I actually tried to pick this one up last year… but it didn’t go so well. In fact, I didn’t read a single word of it. But!! I’ll try this time. Maybe. Especially since now that I remember it’s f/f!! And features a lot of family!!!!

ACE OF SHADES

recommended by: Ilsa and Julianna

Ace of Shades (The Shadow Game, #1)(I’m pretty sure I made a promise to Ilsa that I wouldn’t read this book in case I hated it but… oops.)

I actually have no idea whether or not I’m going to like this one, and I’m usually pretty good at predicting! I really did Not like this author’s debut, but it’s been compared to Six of Crows and you all know I love that book? Predictions aside, I really hope I like this, lest Ilsa and Julianna kill me!!

(I have to say, though, I mucking hate made-up curse words and I know they’re going to torment me in this book.)

SADIE

recommended by: Melanie and Elise

SadieI don’t think Mel or Elise ever actually screamed at me to read this book, but I know it was on their 2018 favorites list, and I trust both of their book opinions with my entire soul. I’ve just heard phenomenal things about this book in general, and I have a feeling I’m going to absolutely adore it.

Also funny story, I used to always get Courtney Summers mixed up with Colleen Hoover when I didn’t know either of them that well (I DON’T KNOW WHY OKAY), and I would just like to take a moment to apologize to Courtney Summers for even associating her with Colleen Hoover.

THE LONG WAY TO A SMALL ANGRY PLANET

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)Another rec from both Mel and Elise because they are just that powerful!! Gays in space will never cease to be one of my favorite things ever, and combine that with one of my favorite tropes ever, found family? I am instantly sold.

I’m also, for some reason, in an adult book kick, so I think this will be a nice addition to that! Even though the size of it is VERY intimidating to me. (And unfortunately, the cover I featured here is the edition I own, since I couldn’t find the nicer-looking cover anywhere.)

SOLITAIRE

recommended by: Lily

SolitaireWhen I saw Romie’s 24hr Alice Oseman Readathon announcement, I knew it would be the perfect chance for me to finally read Solitaire! I’ve loved all of Alice’s Oseman’s works, especially Radio Silence, and knowing that my friend Lily loved this book the most out of all her books makes me more confident I’ll love it.

I’m not actually sure I’ll be able to get a copy by August 10th to read it for the readathon, and the 10th is also Pride in my local city (which I’m not sure if I’m going yet but hope to!), so we’ll see how it all plays out, but I still hope to read it later in the month if not on the 10th!

OTHER BOOKS ON MY TBR

In my Am Currently Update post, I talked about how I was in a reading slump and that buddy reads were pretty much the only things that were getting me to read. Some people expressed interest in buddy reading books with me (hello I love you and you are my SAVIOR), so here are other books I’m hoping to read this month! Feel free to let me know if you want to buddy read any with me!!

If We Were Villains  Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)  SLAY

  • If We Were Villains: Actually, this is a book I tried to read this month, but because the universe hates me, my slump made it really hard for me to read it. As in, I read 50 pages after 5 days of trying. But I really hope I finish this in August because!! theatre gays!!!!
  • Every Heart a Doorway: I’ve been meaning to get into Seanan McGuire books for SO LONG, and it feels like everyone loves them? So when I saw that my library had this available as an audiobook, I knew I had to read it, because audiobooks help me a lot with my reading and it’s perfect timing.
  • SLAY: OH LOOK IT’S ME WITH ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASES!!!! I honestly didn’t expect much when I filled out the request form, but I’m getting it from Simon & Schuster and GOD BLESS. I’m also really happy because the author is going to go the book fest I went to last year and plan to go again to this year, so I might be able to meet her and get my ARC signed!!
  • okay that’s all I got I suck at TBRs

shall we chat

are there any books you’re planning to read in August? or any books your friends have yelled at you to read? what books do YOU want to yell at me to read right now??

p.s. voting for the 2019 Book Blogger Awards ends WEDNESDAY, JULY 31!! so make sure to vote for some amazing bloggers by then (I’m also one of the nominees there, no biggie)

  1. Good luck with your TBR! I actually really enjoyed Ace Of Shades? It’s got some SoC vibes, but if you compare them too much, you may be disappointed. Definitely less of a heist story.

  2. Ace of Shades is good BUTTTTT I would go in with lower expectations than Six of Crows. I think it’s kind of dumb they marketed that way because people’s expectations were so high. Sure it’s about street gangs and has some similarities, but yeah, if you absolutely LOVE SoC just lower those expectations for AoS hahah

    1. Ah I’ve been hearing from people that it’s nothing like Six of Crows so I definitely will be keeping that in mind! I feel like people just hear one thing about a book and compare it to Six of Crows and it’s not good marketing 😳 But thank you!! <3
