The Pancake Book Tag that Makes Me Hungry (Yes Hello I’m Back)

Hello, I’m back!!!

Sorry for disappearing on you guys for a week!! Be prepared for this to happen more often as I drown in schoolwork. My teachers love to shove a bunch of work at me all at once, and then I have breaks in between all the huge workloads (which is how I’m now able to write this blog post!).

I’m still not quite sure how I’m going to balance blogging with everything, because I’ve clearly been struggling, but it’s fine I’ll just die!!! I’m not confident in my ability to come back if I take a longer hiatus, so I’m gonna keep trying to stay on top of everything, but c’est difficile et je suis désolée!

I thought for my first post “back” (I sound dramatic because I AM), I’d do something fun and easy that I’ve been meaning to do a while: The Pancake Book Tag! I think I’ve been tagged a few times for this one, but I was also first tagged by the creator, Becky @ Blogs of a Bookaholic. Be sure to check out Becky and her blog, because she’s an absolute angel!!

PANCAKES & A SPRINKLING OF SUGAR

a book that has a dusting of beautiful prose/descriptions

When the Moon Was OursMy answer for this is 100% any of Anna-Marie McLemore’s books, because their  writing is truly a gift from god herself and we don’t deserve the beauty!! All of their books are magical realism, and their prose is just absolutely gorgeous. The way they describe things and express the emotions of their characters is out of this world! (I think all of their books are amazing, though my favorite is When the Moon Was Ours.)

fae divider (2)

PANCAKES & LEMON DRIZZLE

a sharp character in wit or temperament

Red, White & Royal BlueI’m gonna go with the entire squad in Red, White & Royal Blue, because they’re all so sarcastic and witty and for WHAT. The White House trio members were so wonderfully hilarious (I can’t decide which one of them is the cheekiest), but an unexpectedly witty person was Henry, because he seems so stoic and serious!

Anyways if I think too much about this book, I’ll start crying and wanting to reread it, so I’m forcing myself to shut up now.

PANCAKES & CHOCOLATE
NUTELLA DRIZZLE

a comforting read you could devour again & again

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)I think you could all see this answer coming: Percy Jackson and the Olympians. If you’ve been around, you’ve probably seen how much more obsessive I suddenly got about PJO, and I actually reread The Lightning Thief very recently because I was feeling sad and needed something to cheer me up. No matter what, this series will always be my comfort series, and rereading it will feel like coming home.

PANCAKES & GOLDEN SYRUP

a novel that gave you a seriously bad book hangover

There’s only one book that gave me a book hangover that I can remember right now (The Foxhole Court), but since I don’t want to scream about the same books you’ve heard me screaming about already, I made an effort to look through all the read dates of this year’s reads on Goodreads. And I found that King of Scars apparently gave me a book hangover, which makes sense because 1) I was still overwhelmed that we got a NINA POV BOOK, and 2) the ending made me angry. It’s 7 months later and I’m still angry.

PANCAKES, STRAWBERRIES, & CREAM

a book that gave you all the indulgent feels!

Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1)Like I said, I’m trying to talk about books other than the ones I usually talk about, so for this one I’m going with Jade City. My brain is still kinda ??? at everything that went down in that book because what!!! I think it’s one of those books that are so subtly good that you don’t notice how obsessed you are with it until you’ve finished and you just can’t stop thinking. It really surprised me how I thought I didn’t care too much about the characters, until something happened and then I was emotional!!

Also, the biggest feels moments were definitely at *that* thing. If you know, you know. And if you know, you probably still cry about it like me.

PANCAKES & BLUEBERRIES

a character that seems sharp at first, but actually has hidden depths

We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya, #1)Nasir from We Hunt the Flame is a very… grumpy and brooding character (mainly because of his Tragic Background), and I think what makes him interesting for this prompt is that other people view him as cold and heartless because he’s an assassin. But he really does have depths and a “soft” side, and despite what people think of him, he does care for others. I just love him okay he doesn’t deserve to be tortured!!

fae divider (2)

PANCAKES & BANANA TOFFEE

a book with a slippery plot that kept you guessing!

SadieThe most recent mystery/thriller book I read was Sadie, and oh my god was this one a SHOCKING book. I really had no idea what was going to happen next, and all the reveals were so cleverly written. And of course, that ending left me in actual shock; I remember turning the last page and being so surprised and devastated that there wasn’t more. It’s just… a phenomenal book, and definitely one of my favorites of the year.

fae divider (2)

PANCAKES & CRISPY BACON

a romantic pairing you weren’t sure you’d like at first, but ended up being the perfect match!

We Contain MultitudesI actually can’t think of a single book that fits this for me, so I’m going to do the opposite of the prompt: a romantic pairing I thought I was going to like, but ended up being a TERRIBLE match! And for this I have to say no other than Jo and Kirk (Kurt? Adam? some weird white boy name idk) from We Contain Multitudes. Yes, I know I’ve already talked about it, but I’m still so uncomfortable with it!! I thought I was going to like the book because 1) gay, and 2) compared to Ari and Dante, but it turned out to be a romance between a 15yo and 18yo, and I felt so icky and gross!!!

fae divider (2)

PANCAKES & PEANUT BUTTER

a character that makes you recoil

I only have two words for this: Cardan’s tail.

PANCAKES WITH A BIT OF EVERYTHING!

a book with wonderfully diverse characters

Far from the TreeMost of the books that I answered with have diverse characters, but I’ll go with another book I read recently, that has diverse characters in both the sense of representation and personality differences: Far From the Tree! I was so surprised by how much I loved this one, and I’m not ashamed to say it made me tear up. It really is the perfect book about siblings and family, and I loved the representation too!! There was a teen mom MC, lesbian MC, and biracial Mexican MC (and the discussions about privilege were so nice too).

shall we chat

have you read any of the books I mentioned? (READ PJO) what characters make you recoil? and if you want to do this tag, please feel free to! I think most of the people I would’ve tagged have already been tagged!!

    1. Thank you, Jenna!! And aaahhh I love When the Moon Was Ours SO much — the cover is definitely a reason to pick it up if not for the beautiful inside as well! And aahhh yeah, personally I’d recommend just staying away from We Contain Multitudes in general since the age gap was so yucky :// Thank you so much! <3

    1. If I’d used the graphics Becky had made, I would have for sure died of hunger for pancakes because they all looked so good!! And yes PLEASE read Anna-Marie, she’s genuinely one of the best YA authors and it is’a CRIME that her work isn’t more widely read. And PJO is just… always my favorite. It will never not be my favorite 😭😭

  4. “Cardan’s Tail” … *cue me screaming* AHHHHHH

I’m honestly in such a big mood with you for how hectic the school year can make our blogging lives. 😭 I hope that we have more time or find a better balance as things get hectic.

afjlskfjaslfja i also feel so happy when i see the books you mention in your tags because im like AGHHH MY HEART the white house trio is truly EVERYTHING and I NEED TO READ KING OF SCARS (but i havent read the last two books in the grisha trilogy so im like WAHHHH)

    1. Cardan’s tail is 100% a cause of screaming from TERROR

And aahh I BELIEVE IN YOU TIFF!! You seem to be doing a better job than me at this whole school and blogging thing though 😭 (but please remember to take care of yourself because you’re amazing and I love you!!)

The White House trio is Legendary, like I love Alex and Henry but I would 100% read a whole spinoff novel just about the three of them. And nooo do NOT subject yourself to the rest of the Grisha trilogy, book 2 was the worst (and I personally don’t think you need to read it for KoS but of course there are spoilers lmao)

Ahhh, now I want pancakes. I also want to finish reading We Hunt the Flame! I started it awhile ago, and I was actually enjoying it! I just haven’t had the time to get back to it, but so far Nasir is super interesting. I own a copy of Blanca y Roja, and I’m so excited to start a book my McLemore! Also, big yikes about We Contain Multitudes ://

  7. Wonderful answers, May! <3 I love this tag, so I was ecstatic when I saw that this tag was coming from your blog! I recently finished Sadie and it was SO shocking! I hadn't anticipated many of the revelations, and I couldn't believe how it ended. Overall, it was such a brilliant piece of literature.

  8. I’m happy to read a new blog post from you, May, (even if I’m doing so late because I’m basically drowning too and I have been so bad at blog hopping, too). I hope that you’ve been well as you read this and that school hasn’t been too hard on you, I’m sending you lots of love <3
I really really need and want to read Anna Marie McLemore's books, I feel like I could really fall in love with them all, so I can't wait <3
