Goodbye 2019: My Favorite Moments of the Year and the Decade!

It’s that time of year…

That time of year when I reflect on everything that happened and realized this year was a lot worse than I thought!!

In an effort to be more positive (because as you can see, I’m not very good at that), I’ve decided this year to take out the “least favorite” moments, because I’d rather not dwell on all of those. And I’m a little afraid there would be more of those than favorite moments.

Also, 2019’s special because it’s the end of a decade, so I decided to throw in some overall favorite moments of the decade as well! I was practically 2 years old at the start of the decade (I’m exaggerating!!!), so they’re all a bit more recent, but still important enough to me.

2019

  • Spending more time offline. I think this is really important to me, because while I’ve been inactive enough to make myself feel bad, I’ve also been just using that time to spend more time with people in real life. I hate to say it as an intr*vert, but hanging out with my friends is one of the things that’s made me happiest this year, and I’m really glad getting offline has helped me to be able to do that.
    .
  • Winning a writing contest! I know winning things aren’t the end-all, be-all of everything, and don’t determine your value or ability as a writer, but in academics I always feel like my writing isn’t super strong. With fiction, I just feel so much more comfortable, and winning a writing contest gives me all the validation and serotonin. (And money.)
    .
  • Skiing with my friend! For some reason, the mountains always makes me so so happy, and while I don’t think I could live there because of the isolation, it just holds some kind of peace that makes me feel monumentally better. I also loved skiing, and especially with one of my closest friends!

  • Hosting the 2019 Book Blogger Awards! While there were definitely some things that were… not the best, to say the least, and I was very late in getting winner’s badges out, I loved seeing how happy people got from it. Boosting and supporting bloggers has always been my favorite thing.
    .
  • Rereading so many favorite books! My reading year was all over the place, if I’m being honest, but one of the best highlights was how many favorites I was able to reread. Being able to reread is one of my favorite things about reading in general, and I revisited so many new and old books I loved!! (In fact, I reread 18 books this year—almost 1/5 of my entire year’s reads…)
some of the books I reread in 2019!
  • Joining band class! This is a small thing, and something I get made fun of for by my friends (which I deserve), but I’ve really loved being in band this year. I was in art at the beginning of 2019, and it stressed me out terribly, so I took band instead this school year and I truly adore it. The class is laid-back, easy, and it’s really fun to play music for 1.5 hours at the end of the day! (Yes I’m a music nerd….)
    .
  • Watching Miraculous Ladybug. I know I’m annoying you all by constantly talking about this stupid kids’ show but I love it!!! It’s very stupid but I love it!!!!!!

THE DECADE

  • Blogging, first of all! 2017 was when I started my blog, and though I would rather die than look at the posts I used to write then (or even just last year), I’m still so so glad I started blogging. I feel like it has changed my life in monumental ways, and it’s brought me a lot of happiness overall.
this was my first blog header and… I still can’t get over how terrible it is
  • Making friends!! It’s very weird to think back five years ago to when I made the irl friends I’m the closest to right now, because it feels like such a long yet short amount of time. And of course I’ve made so many new friends online as well, and I’m so happy that I’ve met all of you!
    .
  • Being able to travel a lot! I’m very very lucky to have the travel opportunities I do, and over the last 10 years I’ve been able to go to a lot of places: Thailand, Japan, Canada, and various states in the US. Exploring these different places is an amazing experience, and I love to see what new cities and countries can offer.
Tokyo, Japan!!
  • Reading some pretty great books. Granted, I was very VERY young at the beginning of the decade, so I don’t think I could have read any lifetime favorites at that age, but in the more recent years I found books that I know are going to stick with me forever!! (And I’m talking not just since I started blogging, but also 2012ish when I first read Percy Jackson. Yes I’m a slut for the PJO series, mind your business!!!)
    .
  • Growing as a person! This decade was when I entered my teen years (I’m a baby I KNOW), but it’s not just my physical growth that I’m proud of. Having to look at myself or the things I did/made before last year brings me pain like no other, and I’m very happy I’ve grown to be the person I am today. I have a lot of developing left (especially in terms of the *motions to brain to demonstrate frequent moments of stupidity*), but I’m excited!!! The new decade brings a lot of new things and hopefully I’ll only grow and improve!

shall we chat

what were your favorite moments of 2019? do you remember any favorite moments of the decade? have you been able to travel anywhere exciting? what are your favorite books of the decade!!

    1. I love band a lot!! it’s just a lot of fun and so much more relaxing compared to art lmao. I hope you can find the time to pick up your instrument again! and I’m super excited to see what the 20s bring!! I think it’ll be my biggest decade of change but I’m excited 🥰

  3. Oooh I like the looking back at the whole decade! I feel so old when I think about graduating high school in 2010 and now it’s 2020… Great post! I hope in the next decade you get to read more good books, make more new friends and travel to more beautiful places :)

  4. Oh this is really lovely, May! Congratulations on winning writing contest! :) I think I love spending more time offline too, in a sense that I meet and reconnected with a lot of my old friends. I didn’t realize how much I miss them and comfortable being with them until we hung out!

  5. Rereading for the win! I know the year wasn’t all sunshine but it’s always good to acknowledge all the things that made you happy ♥ One of my favorite things about this year also involves focusing more on the offline. I had the opportunity to help organize activities for young adults in our local book fair, which had been a dream of mine since forever.

I read A LOT of romance books. I’m finally free of the prejudice against unapologetic romance books, and I’m wearing the romance reader label proudly, which I consider a win for me :3

    1. yes, definitely! 2019 had its ups and downs, but I’m focusing on being grateful for all the good moments 🥰 and wow Pamela, that’s absolutely amazing!! I hope one day to do something like that — I’m so glad you had such a great experience and got to achieve a dream like that 💖💖

yay, I’m so happy to hear that!! I don’t think I’ll ever be a big romance reader but I’m glad you’ve grown comfortable with being a romance reader and found a genre you love 💞

  6. it’s so exciting you won a writing contest this year! i used to take part in contests at my high school regularly and i won more than a couple, which was awesome, because even though as you said, they don’t mean that much, i’d win a gift card for a bookstore every time which meant more books!
i re-read a bunch this past year too – i was trying to re-read a book a month, and i’m glad i was able to. i re-read ari & dante back in january of 2019 and i want to pick it up again already, hahah
i don’t know if i have a lot of favorite moments from the decade; as you put it yourself, it’s hard enough remembering what happened in the past year, moreover in the past decade! but traveling is definitely a highlight. it was only in 2014 that i had the chance to travel abroad for the first time, and since then, i’ve been abroad twice! traveling is so much fun and i feel like really allow me to grow as a person. i’ve learned things about myself i didn’t know once i went abroad and that can be really powerful.
    wishing you an amazing 2020!

  7. I love this post! It makes me happy to see all the good things that have happened to fellow bloggers in the last year <3
I definitely need to spend less time online because I know it makes me happier in the long term. I also need more Miraculous Ladybug in my life!! I love cartoons and although my favourites are normally ones with a bit more plot I love the stupid amounts of joy I get from Miraculous Ladybug! Fingers crossed we get more episodes this year :)
    Have a lovely 2020 May!

  8. Reading this post made me feel SO happy for you, May!! <3 I'm so glad that you accomplished such incredible things this year! I'm glad that you had a chance to reread so many of your favorites, and that you loved Miraculous lady bug so much. It's such an underrated show in my opinion!! I loved seeing how much the community gathered together for the blogging awards, and hope that it'll be just as wonderful this year when you host it! Wishing you the happiest of 2020s!

  9. It’s great that you had a good time with your friends in 2019! I feel like I got a lot closer to my friends too and that just means a lot since I’m not a very open person (i say as I share my life on the internet 😂)! I’ve also finally got the foxhole court on my kindle after hearing you rave about it for the past couple of years and I’m so excited to start it!

I’m glad you had a bunch of great moments last decade and I hope 2020 is brilliant for you! ❤
