May’s Moments of the Month: May // End of School, Asian Books, and What to Do For Black Lives Matter

Hi, it’s been a month.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news or social media at all within the last few days, Black lives Matter protests have been taking place to demand justice for the murder of George Floyd and countless other Black people at the hands of the police. Please go ahead and unfollow me if you disagree with BLM, ACAB, or the protests happening right now—it’s honestly best for the both of us!

I have a platform on this blog, and I think it’s very important that I use it. Please do not stay silent on these matters, now and in the future, and make sure to be actively anti-racist every single day. Here is a list of different things you can do right now:

It is also important to announce that because of this, the 2020 Book Blogger Awards have been postponed until further notice. The new launch date will be announced as soon as possible, but please focus on being good allies to our Black friends (whether they are bloggers or not) right now!!

I will be including these links, and adding on if needed, at the beginning of each of my posts! This post will be a recap on what happened in May and is slightly shorter (emphasis on slightly because I cannot shut up) than my usual recaps.

mmm reading

I read 8 books in May! I didn’t quite follow my TBR but we won’t talk about that. Honestly I’m surprised I managed to read 8; my focus has been close to nonexistent, and I either have to read everything in one sitting or I don’t read anything at all.

While there were some great Asian books, there were also lots of disappointing ones too, which I’m sad about! I don’t know why my reads have been so meh/bad recently, but I hope it doesn’t continue. But I’m officially halfway through my Goodreads challenge so. perhaps I am superior??

Also something impressive I will absolutely brag about is that I went through my Goodreads TBR shelf, and took off almost 500 books! I really am superior sometimes!!

Favorite: 🌹, least favorite: 🥀, most disappointing: 💔.

The Henna Wars  Love From A to Z  Like a Love Story  On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous

  • The Henna Wars Adiba Jaigirdar // I loved the romance, sister relationship, and QPOC rep so much in this book!! ★★★★☆ [review]
  • 🌹 Love From A to Z SK Ali // such a cute book with so many important messages. I love Adam and Zayneb so much!!! ★★★★☆
  • 🥀 Like a Love Story Abdi Nazemian // one of the worst reading experiences ever. annoying characters, bad writing… just so disappointing, since I was expecting a new favorite! ★★☆☆☆
  • On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous Ocean Vuong // a little hard to get into but so so beautiful and overall a very immersive experience ★★★★☆ [3.5]

Amina's Voice  Not Your Sidekick (Sidekick Squad, #1)  Unravel the Dusk (The Blood of Stars, #2)  Harley in the Sky

  • Amina’s Voice Hena Khan // sweet and warm but the ending was just so abrupt and felt underwhelming ★★★☆☆ [2.5]
  • Not Your Sidekick CB Lee // I have a few objective issues, but I had so much fun reading it! binged in one sitting ★★★★☆ [3.5]
  • 💔 Unravel the Dusk Elizabeth Lim // this is my biggest disappointment no one talk to me… I basically just didn’t care about the characters ★★☆☆☆
  • Harley in the Sky Akemi Dawn Bowman // also a disappointment! didn’t care about the characters again but it was overall well-written ★★☆☆☆ [2.5]

mmm blogging

updates

I was doing slightly better with commenting on blog posts, but then it went downhill near the end of the month. I’ve been pretty good with replying to comments, and commenting back, but actually commenting on the posts in my Reader… not really.

As stated before, the 2020 Book Blogger Awards are postponed and Marie and I will let you know the newest launch date as soon as we can!

mmm writing

I reached 28.3k words for my planning, meaning I wrote about 14.6k more this month. And while that may sound like a lot, a good majority of it is either me coming up with one thing after rambling for 500 words and then ditching it 5 pages later, or something like:

I honestly don’t have much of a plot right now, but I’m trying to figure it out and hopefully that will be done this month! I’m also hoping that I will be able to make an outline in June as well.

Perhaps the most important writing achievement was that I made picrews of my characters!!! I spent like 3 hours on them and I have no regrets. However these are all subject to change because I would absolutely spend another 3 hours fixing them!! (Credit to @poika_, here’s the link.)

As for poetry, I didn’t write much, but I did write a poem that actually… was not bad!! It’s very different from what I’m used to writing, but I ended up doing some ~cool~ things I didn’t mean to and so I’m vaguely, vaguely proud of that.

mmm life

  • I finished school! I didn’t have any exams, and I haven’t seen my classmates’ faces since like March, so it was a very underwhelming finish. But I did it!
  • I listened to a lot of music (Cage the Elephant, Clairo, Rina Sawayama).
  • I had a dance recital on Zoom, and at one point I completely blanked and had to step out of the camera frame for a whole 30 seconds. (After that I put my glasses on so I could actually, you know, see the computer screen.)

Avatar The Last Airbender Netflix Teaser Trailer and Announcement ...

  • I watched and became obsessed with Avatar: The Last Airbender!! I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it and I’m tempted to rewatch already. I think it’s one of my top favorite shows of all time??
  • I did a workout program for 2 weeks! It was really great, except after I finished it, I was completely unmotivated to continue doing any form of exercise.

mmm old goals

  • read 10 books
  • post 7 times (awards post was supposed to be the 7th)
  • follow more blogs
  • continue working on WIP!!
  • write 3 poems (finally. FINALLY)
  • do driver’s ed stuff
  • read/write/listen to Thai every day (I’m very sad about this)
  • exercise? work out?
  • go outside for once jesus

mmm new goals

  • read 13 books (this is the exact amount of books on my June TBR!!)
  • continue working on WIP!! (I’m so excited about it that I want to make fun of myself for it)
  • write 3 poems
  • do driver’s ed stuff
  • read/write/listen to Thai every day
  • work out
  • SAT practice
  • research college stuff (my parents are getting on to me about this)
  • donate

mmm looking ahead

Even without the Black Lives Matter protests happening right now, I honestly would not know what to say here. It’s summer, and the third month of lockdown for me. There really isn’t anything major that’s going to happen in my life while I’m at home and out of school? Every day is just like, wake up, go on phone or computer, read a bit, eat, and sleep.

shall we chat

how was your May? have you watched ATLA?? was your reading less disappointing than mine? and most importantly, have you been a good ally and spoken up about BLM?

  1. ahhh your mc in the green reminds me of one of my friends mc who is very very smol and cute! (all your mcs look hella cute btw) also i’m so happy that you got to experience the Quality Content™ that is atla!! i’m still rewatching it and i’m having the best time reuniting with my babes!

  2. Avatar is absolutely wonderful! It’s refreshing to have a children’s show that’s so well-made, with diverse representation & genuinely fantastic animation. As far as the BLM movement goes, I feel like it’s really important for us to use our platform to call for change. Personally, as an Asian-American, I feel like a lot of my relatives have certain arcane mindsets surrounding race and identity that I don’t particularly agree with, and I’ve been writing more on my own blog to educate some of them on these issues. Thank you for using your blog as a catalyst for change, and I hope the rest of the blogging community continues to do the same.

    1. agreed!! i think atla is so so brilliant in multiple ways, and it’s wild to think that it’s better-made than some shows for adults. and yes, absolutely! i’ve been posting stuff on my other platforms, so i had to make sure to bring the same energy to my blog ❤ but yeah, asians have a lot more conservative outlooks, but i'm glad that my parents are understanding of this situation and are going out to protests with me! doesn't mean i'm still not having the tough conversations with them though 💗

  3. Congrats on being halfway through your reading challenge!! I have Love from A to Z checked out as an ebook from my library and I’m so excited for it, I’m so happy you loved it! So sad you didn’t enjoy Unravel the Dusk 😔 but your Goodreads review for it was hilarious ngl. And thank you so much for linking my review! I’m crying 😭 😭 Your character Picrews are so cute!! I love the Picrew’s style. And omg it’s so surprising to me you didn’t have exams? We had taken them all online. I’ve been seeing so many people talk about Avatar lately, and I would have honestly succumbed to the hype already if I didn’t not have Netflix 😤 I hope your June is going wonderfully May, and hope you complete all of your June goals!! 🥰

    1. ah thank you faith!! i’m very very surprised to be ahead and i hope i can keep it up 😭 love from a to z is AMAZING, and i’m glad you enjoyed my “review” of unravel the dusk 😌 oh of course i’d link to your review! it was amazing, so well-written, and made me 100x more excited to read felix ❤ and aahh i'm surprised we didn't have exams either lmao! i'm not quite sure what the reasoning behind that was but i'm very happy about it

i hope you have a great june as well, faith!!! happy pride 🥰💖

  4. Thank you for sharing all of those resources at the beginning, May! Love your call to be actively anti-racist every day.
Oh NO that’s so sad that Unravel the Dusk was a disappointment! 😥 I’m VERY curious about your thoughts on it.
Thanks once again for creating the fantastic PJO/HOO tag – it’s made me so happy to see all the responses and the resurgence of love from the PJO fandom 😀 Also your picrew characters are adorable!! (I definitely waste a lot of time creating picrews for my characters too, it’s FINE.)
I am DELIGHTED that you loved Avatar so much!! It’s definitely one of my top shows of all time and all the recent love for it has made me want to rewatch it, even though I rewatched it just last year 😀 I’ll never get tired of it!
Happy June, happy pride, and happy reading ❤

    1. it’s the least i can do!! glad it’s helpful ❤

ah i'm still honestly not quite sure why i had such a strong reaction against unravel the dusk lmao! but i'll definitely be posting a review of it. and aahh you're too kind to me!! i'm excited to get around to reading your post — i've been the worst at commenting lately 😭

YES i love atla so so much!!! it's absolutely one of my favorite shows of all time as well — it's both so enjoyable subjectively and also crafted brilliantly on an objective level. i don't think i'll get tired of it either, and i'm beyond happy it got on netflix so i could finally watch it!

have a great pride too, margaret 🥰💖

  5. Thank you for putting out the resources for people to help with BLM! It’s very helpful especially to those who don’t know how they could help and where they should go for that. You’re doing something good, May.

“I either have to read everything in one sitting or I don’t read anything at all.” This. This sentence perfectly described my focus with anything really. Be it reading, watching something. Probably the reason why I prefer short stories/standalones and movies more to series.

Congratulations on finishing your school! And your picrews are soooo good! I already want to meet them all 💖 I hope this Pride month will be better for you reading wise 🌈

    1. no problem! it’s the least i can do to offer support. sharing resources is the bare minimum!! ❤

and aah yes, i'm glad someone can relate to my focus issues 😭 it's been tortuous to have to read like this but at least i'm not alone lmao!! and thank you so much, aina 💖 i'm really glad you like my picrews! and thank you — i hope you read lots of great books this month too!!

ALSO YOUR CHARACTER PIC-CREWS!! so cute!! Great now I’m gonna spend 3 hours making them for my characters i hate you!! the fact that you liked love from a to z makes me feel validated IDK WHY i haven’t even read it (and idk if i will) . also you’ve been really procastinating that driver’s ed stuff it’s been repeatedly on ur goals…yes this is a call out. also if ur gonna write 3 poems, i expect 3 poems in my DMs sorry i don’t make the rules.

omg ilsa i really hope you read love from a to z and love it! judging from my other muslim friends’ reactions to the muslim rep i think you’ll enjoy that aspect?? and the romance is just cute! and SHUT UP why do u have to call me out… but yes thank u for the reminder to do my driver’s ed…

  7. Ah, Thank you for the reminder! I’ll let the video play while I hop on other things.

Ahhh congrats for finishing school!! I’m sure this must’ve been such an odd way to end.. This pandemic make things like this so much more odd :/
Now the dance recital on zoom makes me question.. was it all your class together or just you and the professor? sounds like quite the unique experience.
Ohhh I LOVED watching episodes of ATLA before going to school XD It used to air in french around 7h30am and I had to leave at 8- so I would chill in bed while watching it.. I must go back and watch the whole seasons.

Goodluck for your June’s goals xx

    1. yeah. finishing school was definitely weird! it doesn’t quite feel like i’m actually Done haha. and it was my whole class, for our dance recital on zoom! the teacher was there with her camera turned off and we recorded like that 🥰

oh, what you said about atla is so cute!!! i think i was too young to actually process anything if i had watched it live haha. thank you so much, i hope you have a great june!! ❤

  8. Thank you so much for sharing all the resources, May!💗That was really helpful!

I really enjoyed reading this recap, congratulations on finishing school and on your zoom recital (I had one and I also forget a small section of one of the dances, it was fun). Your PJO/HOO tag was amazing by the way, and I am planning to publish my post on it soon!! I’m so happy it’s getting all the love that it deserves. Also, wow, taking 500 books off your TBR is a massive accomplishment oh my gosh!

Best of luck with all your goals for the new month and I hope your June goes really well! xx

thank you so much! i don't remember if i commented yet on your recap but i remember reading that you had zoom recital stuff too, so i hope it went well besides forgetting a small part of your dance haha ❤ and aahh thank you!! i'm so excited to read your post 🥺 honestly i don't know how i did it but it was such a huge relief! it's very freeing to know that i can just add books back if i am actually interested in them haha

thank you, and i hope you have an amazing june as well!!

  9. Goodness! I love the picrews! (I also can’t believe you managed to take 500 books off your to-read and not replace every one of them…I’d never be able to do that lol). Love From A to Z is the best, it’s pretty much the only good chronic illness rep out there.

Thank you for the links! There are also plenty of other ‘stream to donate’ videos now. Also, you can’t leave them on replay because then Youtube will stop sending adexpenses, so you have to have 3–5 different videos playing in between each.

    1. ah ele! thank you so much, i’m so happy you love them! and aahh honestly just going through my to-read shelf and asking myself “would i actually read this in the next month” and if the answer was no… off it went haha

yes, i always see a bunch more videos whenever i look up “stream to donate”! and yep, i’ve been keeping that in mind 🥰

  10. Thank you for sharing all those resources, May!! ❤
I'm sorry to hear life seems to be "the same" lately. I definitely feel the same, I miss having a routine, and I can't keep up one in my house. It's incredible how you managed to do a two-week work out challenge – I've tried plenty of workouts, but I never stick to them )): I love dancing, so occasionally I play JustDance, but most times I just don't have the motivation to do anything … It was also last month that I first watched avatar, and I really, really liked it! I'm actually surprised at how long it took me to finally get around to it.
I'm adding Love From A to Z to my TBR 😛 I've also read The Henna Wars and found it really cute, especially the sibling relationship, but I had some trouble liking some characters … And I'm excited about reading Not Your Sidekick and Spin the Dawn, so now I'm lowkey scared of the latter, due to your thoughts about Unravel the Dusk ):
I hope June is a better month for you! Good luck with your goals ❤

    1. no problem!! ❤

yes, not having a routine is so difficult for me! i'm trying to establish one but i don't have enough willpower to follow through lmao 😭 and honestly i'm surprised i stuck to it, but i think from now on i'm just gonna try working out in whatever way i can every day haha! and i'm so glad you liked atla too, i swear i can't shut up about it 🥺

YES love from a to z is amazing! and i'm sorry you weren't a huge fan of the henna wars, but i'm glad you enjoyed the sibling relationship ❤ and aahh honestly i think my negative feelings about unravel the dusk are super subjective so hopefully you like it more than i did!

have a great june too, marta ❤

I just binge-read all the Sidekick Squad books that are currently out and it was a great experience 😊 I do agree that they aren’t perfect but I love all the characters and how comforting the books are 🥰 I also wish you all the best with your writing project, you got this! One of my guilty pleasures is also to create picrews of my characters in the name of ‘brainstorming’ 😅

oh i’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed all the sidekick squad books! i won the three that are out right now in a giveaway so i’m excited to be able to continue 🥺 aahh!! thank you so much!!! i’ve resisted the urge to fix my picrews so far but i’m definitely going to break soon 😭 i hope you have a great june and your writing goes well for you too!!

  12. Ohh May was an absolutely terrible reading month for me oops but hey I had a good month overall, ATLA is absolutely amazing (but I’m still going to say Azula deserved a redemption arc always) and ooh good luck with SAT practice and stuff, I’m taking it for the second time in August ahh. And thanks for sharing the resources, let’s hope people keep caring after it’s no longer trending because change is long overdue.

good luck taking the sat again!! and no problem, i also hope people continue to care ❤

  13. omg your quarantine/summer routine is exactly the same as mine. i honestly do nothing everyday except use the phone/computer, exercise for a bit, and eat. i only read audiobooks now, and i think i’ve forgotten how to read physically… i’m sorry the books you read last month were disappointing! i’ve been lucky to not have any 2 or 1 star reads lately, but i feel lukewarm about everything i read, and i wish i would have a visceral reaction to a book again sigh
you made so much progress on your WIP!! trust me, compared to my progress, mine is nonexistent 😅 i spent the majority of yesterday afternoon making picrews of my characters and hunting for face claims lmao. it’s embarrassing that i spent so long on the picrews yet they’re still very subject to change..
you deserve all the great blogging stats, May!! hope you have a great June ❤

    1. caitlin it’s SO BAD i literally can’t force myself to have an actual routine (or at least, an actual routine during the day and not at midnight). and god i wish i had more audiobooks to listen to, because reading books with my eyeballs is so hard for me right now lmao. and aahh yeah, i had the same meh feeling in april! i hope you start feeling more strongly about your reads, it sucks to feel so indifferent 😦

ah okay i honestly didn’t, i know it sounds like a lot but i’ve scrapped like a majority of what i figured out in may 😭 but YES for spending time on picrews, we can be picrew trash together ❤ and 🥺🥺 thank u so much caitlin!! i hope you have a fantastic june too!!!

  14. Ah, May I did the same thing recently. I would DEVOUR a book then feel slumpy and then find a new book to devour all over again. It’s lowkey a crappy place to be in because it feels like you’re not reading at all. Weirdest and maybe most annoying slump ugh

I super want to get my hands on Love From A to Z, I’ve heard 0 bad things!! As well as On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous < 3

my May went okay, I read a ton but not many new books, I reread a fave series. And ahh I'm currently rereading Children of Blood & Bone and now I really want to watch ATLA 🙂

im so glad you loved Love from A to Z! it’s one of my faves!! and ATLA!!!!!!! i wanted to rewatch it because i watched it when i was very young so i don’t remember much? but then it wasn’t available on netflix in my country :((

  17. Congratulations on finishing school May!! ATLA is an absolutely fantastic show. One of my friends and I watched it together over Netflix Party for the past two weeks and it was so so fun! I’m loving how much hype its been getting since it got added to Netflix, I love all the resurgence memes and tik toks. I don’t know if it’s intentional, but the second line of your books read is *very* aesthetically pleasing, I love the orange.

Thank you for sharing the resources! I hope you’ve been having a great June! 💕

  18. I’m not American so the BLM movement has been a bit different for me. But still, my youth group in particular have been talking a lot about it and have made donations/loans to black women who own small businesses in America and we’ve also talked a lot about recognising and remembering the 400 + Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have died in police custody. It’s been very eye opening and sobering for me and its made me so angry as well.
I had a very satisfactory reading month though! Sad to hear your’s wasn’t as good. Hopefully next month will be better.

    1. i’m glad to see that you’ve been taking action outside of the us!! that’s amazing to see ❤ and yes, i've read things about all the aboriginal people who have died from police brutality in australia, and i was happy to see signs at australian protests talking about it

oh i'm happy your reading went well in may! i hope that continues this month too 🥰
