May’s Moments of the Month: August // School Killed Me

I’m very dead right now.

You’ve maybe noticed that I disappeared for a bit this month, and that’s because school absolutely killed me. My time, my energy, my motivation to do anything besides schoolwork for hours and hours—gone. I think that description probably already gives you a good idea of what my month looked like (pain, death, other similar despairing nouns).

But… at least I read a lot of books! And thought there are many things I want to scream about in regards to school/my state/the US government/COVID, I’m also very grateful to be at home and safe from getting the virus and/or passing it on to others!!

TW: death, cancer // In honor of Chadwick Boseman’s death, caused by colon cancer (which disproportionately affects Black Americans more), consider donating to Black cancer fundraisings/research; here’s a place to start.

mmm reading

I read 10 books this month! Which is very surprising, considering how I was busy with school and it was somehow more than I read in July? (I actually had a TBR of 14 books, but me being me, I didn’t read half of them and um… just picked up some other books…)

But I’m really happy with how varied my age groups/genres were, instead of just reading YA like I usually do! I read a comic, a graphic novel, a memoir, an adult fantasy, and three MG fantasies. I’m definitely hoping that this pattern continues with the rest of the year!!

Favorite (not counting rereads): 🌹, least favorite: 🥀, most disappointing: 💔.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Rift (Avatar: The Last Airbender, #3)  The Bone Shard Daughter (The Drowning Empire, #1)  The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)  We Are Okay  The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2)

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Rift Gene Luen Yang // this was focused on Toph and it was so cute! I missed Zuko though… ★★★☆☆ [3.5]
  • 🌹 The Bone Shard Daughter Andrea G Stewart // while not what I expected, it was such a solid debut, immersive, and full of the best plot twists!! ★★★★☆ [review]
  • The Lightning Thief Rick Riordan // [reread] I love PJO so much… I guess I just really needed some comfort this month and this was perfect ★★★★★
  • 💔 We Are Okay Nina LaCour // [reread] I thought I was going to like this a lot more upon reread, but that was completely wrong!! I get it slightly more but was still bored ★★☆☆☆ [2.5]
  • The Sea of Monsters Rick Riordan // this really is my least favorite of the series (even beyond the ableism), but it still holds a special place in my heart ★★★★☆ [3.5]

The Storm Runner (The Storm Runner #1)  Darius the Great Deserves Better (Darius the Great, #2)  Know My Name  Bloom  Where Dreams Descend (Kingdom of Cards, #1)

  • The Storm Runner JC Cervantes // this was just not really interesting/exciting to me, and the writing voice kind of annoyed me. also, the internalized ableism… yikes ★★☆☆☆
  • Darius the Great Deserves Better Adib Khorram // I didn’t care too much for the romance aspect in this book, and sometimes Darius gets very weird, but… these books really feel so comforting to me ★★★★☆
  • Know My Name Chanel Miller // listened to this one on audiobook and god, hearing such a personal, painful story straight from Chanel herself made it even more emotional. I highly recommend this one, if you can handle the rape and sexual assault [no rating]
  • Bloom Kevin Panetta // I thought I was going to like this a lot more upon reread but that was completely wrong!! I get it slightly more but was still bored ★★★★☆ [3.5]
  • 🥀 Where Dreams Descend Janella Angelles // it took me more than a month to read this, and I didn’t DNF only out of pettiness. one of my least favorite books of the year; so boring and poorly-written, and I didn’t care about anything ★★☆☆☆ [1.5]

mmm blogging

So. I disappeared. I posted some content, but I don’t really count that as “active” because I wasn’t actually talking to you guys. Honestly, it’s very likely that I’ll be taking a hiatus sometime soon. I only have plans for two upcoming blog posts, and school is keeping me really busy. And I hate that I keep making content without interacting with you guys, so I’d rather take a posting hiatus to try and reply to comments/visit some blogs instead!!

In other news, though: This block editor. WHY. I’m suffering so much right now. I took 2 hours to try to figure it out, and then gave up and used the classic editor block. I think there are a few features that look cool with blocks, but I just don’t have the time to figure it all out right now!! (Also, if WP doesn’t stop being glitchy for me and refusing to save my drafts, I’m going to murder something.)

The results of the Book Blogger Awards will be posted on Sunday, September 6!

  • Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea created a “guide” to supporting book blogs!! It may not be useful to bloggers who already support other bloggers, but Caitlin also recommends some book bloggers to check out!
  • Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books discusses all the work that book bloggers do, while also shedding light on how much time each thing takes her. (Can we all just appreciate Marie forever, please?)

mmm writing

I know some people were wishing me luck on meeting the deadline for a writing contest I wanted to enter, and I’m here to tell you: I was late by 5 seconds! (I’m truly okay about it though; I would have been disqualified anyways for messed-up formatting, and what I wrote was more for the purpose of entering, rather than me being proud of it.)

I didn’t work on my WIP, because I needed a break after rushing for the contest, and then also starting school and not having any time whatsoever! I’m hoping to put a little more time into it this month, especially because I want to have an outline ready to go next month, but uh… I don’t have that much faith in myself…

But I did do some other writing this month! I wrote a few poems this month, and I also wrote a short story for my English class that was so much fun and made me miss writing. It was such a fun thing to indulge in (ordinary family in ordinary house is actually murderous), and I kind of want to write more short stories now.

mmm life

I went back to school! It’s terrible.

I’m online, which has its cons, but no matter what, I’d rather stay home and avoid getting sick and dying. But school in general makes me exhausted, sad, and stressed out. When I finally manage to finish my schoolwork, I’m completely drained of energy and can’t do the things I want to do. And if I somehow keep my energy, it all comes crashing down when I get new assignments or remember that I have SAT/college things to worry about. So unsurprisingly, my mental health declined!

The Legend of Korra - Nickelodeon - Watch on CBS All Access

Anyways, I’m just going to skip over that part and talk about other things because I love avoiding the issues in my life—some other things that happened this month were: My dance team rehearsals/classes are starting up again and I’m a bit nervous about how it’ll be with COVID, I started watching The Legend of Korra (Korra and Asami… so pretty…..), and Rina Sawayama is still my artist on repeat!!

mmm old goals

  • read 11 books (I was ONE book off…)
  • continue plotting WIP (I don’t know how I thought I would have the time to do this)
  • write 3 poems
  • schedule posts in advance
  • keep up with Reader (jesus christ how was I so confident in myself)
  • do driver’s ed
  • work out (one of my friends was supposed to be an accountability partner but we just ended up pushing it to the next day… and the next…)
  • more college prep

mmm new goals

  • read 9 books (I have some ARCs and buddy reads but I’m trying not to force a TBR on myself)
  • plot WIP
  • write 3 poems
  • write a short story… maybe? (I just want to write more murder sapphics)
  • keep up with Reader
  • reply to comments! (I’m very overwhelmed right now aahh)
  • do driver’s ed
  • work out
  • college prep (I’m taking some test prep classes this month and hahaha I’m going to die)

mmm looking ahead

Not to be sad on main, but I’m just very tired and I can’t think of anything past right now. All I can remember is that dance is starting back up, my school is scheduled to reopen for the people who want to go back in person, and I will be suffering yet again with school and studying and stress!

shall we chat

how did August go for you? have you started school yet? what’s one of your least favorite books of the year? have you watched Legend of Korra?

  1. Aw sending lots of love!! Congrats on finishing 10 books this month, that’s so awesome given how busy you’ve become!! I get what you mean, it’s hard to feel excited when things are just so dull and depressing right now. Hopefully once dance starts and school goes back in-person, things will pick up a bit! (:

  2. ah sending hope to you!! 10 books is really great and i am happy you found comfort in Percy Jackson.

august went super well! i finally got into the poppy war and tdr, and found that where dreams descend is definitely one of my #1 books of the year since i finally see myself represented in a high fantasy novel, and i love the world and writing style and how Kallia fights for what she wants without fear of consequence, she’s quite similar to Juliette Cai from TVD. i hope your september is great!!

  4. Omg I thought my internet got worse during this quarantine as I can’t seem to save drafts of my post but now I see you’re having the same problem, so maybe it’s wordpress? 🙃 My feed sometimes failed to load too and I can’t see my notifications and like posts when I’m on the web… I wonder what’s happening 😭

    1. yes, it’s definitely a wordpress problem!! and omg, i didn’t know that other people were also having problems with feeds/notifications loading — i’ve been so frustrated with that too. and for some reason… sometimes i’m logged out of my wordpress account on certain sites and then it doesn’t let me log in? wordpress please 😭

  5. Rereading Percy Jackson sounds like a great choice, especially when stressed with school and such. Hope things become more manageable for you soon! ❤

Argh I’m right there with you on the block editor. I just want to stick with the classic editor, please and thanks. WP keeps glitching for me too and it’s so frustrating!

Korra and Asami are so gorgeous. Hope you enjoy LoK! 😀 Good luck with school, I’m cheering for you ❤

  6. Boy, do I feel you on the block editor!!! I really tried but I always go back to the classic editor, because I just can’t deal with the new one. XD Also if you need a hiatus then take one! We’ll be around waiting for you whenever you’re ready to come back! Take care of yourself and do what feels right for you! ❤

    1. thank you so much, v!! i’m definitely taking a hiatus right now and it’s been amazing to not have to worry about blogging on top of schoolwork 😭💗 i hope you’ve been having an amazing month — and that the block editor hasn’t been giving you too much of a struggle!

  7. I had my last ever college finals in August so I’m VERY close to graduating. I was supposed to have then in June but COVID-19 kept pushing things and it became late. I’m very happy to be finally done haha.
I hope September is not as tiring and overwhelming for you!

  8. i relate to you so much about school 😭 i’m very lucky because classes are shortened and my teachers give manageable homework, but idk, having school just sucks away all my energy to blog that in my little pockets of free time i just opt to do something else :(( i things get better for you though—you can do it! and the mixed reviews for where dreams descend are telling me that i have a very low chance of enjoying, but i think i’m gonna read it anyway because filipino author and i’ve heard interesting things about the writing 😭
(thank you so much for mentioning my post too 🥺🥺)

    1. i’m glad to hear that you have shorter classes/manageable homework! but yeah, school just… always drains my energy, even if i manage to complete all my assignments and get some free time 😭 and omg caitlin no please save yourself… where dreams descend was one of my worst reading experiences of the year, istg

  9. Oh no, so sorry to hear that school has been eating up your motivation and energy 😥 University starts for me again in November, so I still have some time to relax, but then things will get super busy again.
You did read a lot of great books though! I definitely want to get to Darius the Great Deserves Better as well and I’m happy to hear that you liked it! 🥰 (and omg I thought I was the only one have in issues with WP not saving my drafts 😱)

    1. ah i hope you can make the most of your time before your classes start up again! school is… definitely taking so much out of me right now 😭😭 but yes! i think you’ll love darius the great deserves better, it was such a great sequel ❤ (and i'm not sure if i still have the draft saving problem, since i haven't drafted anything in a while, but i hope it's not acting up for you anymore!!)

  10. I’m so sorry to hear that things have been tough recently, you sound so so busy it must be awfully difficult to balance everything. Take care of yourself and treat yourself with kindness, you’re doing great! I’m hopefully starting my masters at the end of this month if I can sort out some last minute issues, I can’t tell if I’m looking forward to it or not lmao

  11. OOf, school really does take a lot. I just started and it’s draining me already. Although it may be because I’m finally in college and I’m not used to this kind of workload and orientation’s been a lot too.
Hope you’re able to figure out how to balance everything and don’t forget to teach me as well!
Here’s to hoping you’ll have a less stressful September!

and thank you so much!! i am spectacularly failing at achieving balance in my life but it is what it is 😭

  12. August was definitely a bad month for me, in terms of mental health. It was just garbage this year. Especially with work draining me day after day; because we were short staffed and I was being overworked. So I didn’t do any reading this month which was a downside. However, I got a new job this month and I already feel better and see a change in my mental health. I’m so excited for this month and hopefully I can actually get some reading done! I feel you about the new editor. It drove me insane right after the update and I just still haven’t had desire to try and figure it out yet.

    1. i’m sorry to hear that your month was bad! working right now i know must be so difficult :(( but i’m really glad you got a new job!! i hope it’s been going well for you and not being as draining! ❤ and i'm still trying to figure out the block editor aahh… i'm doing pretty okay with it, all things considered, but i'm still reverting back to the classic editor block occasionally 😭

  13. Yeayy!! Congrats on finishing 10 books!! You’re definitely way better than me who only read like one book 😅 August was… I don’t know how to say it. Reading wise, it’s terrible. I got into slump and my brain cells won’t cooperate with me when I tried reading something.

Life wise, umm, nothing interesting happened. I’m still looking for job and worried about COVID and how there are still people who wouldn’t listen to the authorities on COVID new standard of procedures. On a positive note, I re-watched lots of shows I used to enjoy and felt happy with it! So that’s nice.

I feel you about not being active on blog. I also have been inactive on wp for a week now. Even if my post went up it’s because I have it scheduled. I haven’t been doing blog hopping too and I feel worst about it. I’m slowly trying to catch up with blog posts I missed. And yup, school does suck a lot out of you. Personally for me, it brings bad memories (talking about my college days). But I hope you’re taking care of yourself well, May!!

And I wish you have an amazing September 💕💕

    1. i’m late in responding, but thank you so much!! my reading is… not going well anymore ahaha. i’m really sorry to hear you got in a slump! i unfortunately can relate now, but i hope you’re not slumping anymore ❤

job-hunting is so hard, especially right now! wishing you luck with it ❤ and ahh covid anxieties, i totally understand :(( but i'm glad that you could find some comfort in shows, i'm definitely doing that right now haha!

i'm feeling the same way about blogging!! i'm trying to be more active but it's just so draining on top of everything else, so i'm at least trying to blog hop and reply to comments 🥰 i hope you're having a wonderful month, aina!!

  14. Congratulations on reading 10 books, May! That’s wonderful 😊 Writing three poems is great too – I started writing poetry again in August and I’ve been enjoying it so much. I hope school is less stressful for you in September and that you have an amazing month overall ✨

  15. I’m so sorry school has been so stressful for you, May. I just went back online too, and it has been really hard for me as well. I am glad that I’m able to stay safe at home though, because in my district you can choose to go back in person or not, which is awful and frankly terrifying (oh well, I live in Texas). I haven’t worked on any writing this month, but it is so amazing that you were able to write three poems. I just finished Darius the Great Deserves Better, and I definitely agree, it is such a comfort read and I was so happy to be back in that world.
Overall, I hope your posting hiatus is good for you and I hope that school starts to be less stressful!

  16. Please do take some time for yourself, everyone would understand and your health comes first! I hope that, even though school is being incredibly busy, you’re enjoying what you’re studying!! ❤ I'm in awe you managed to read so much, that's amazing!! But I'm sad to hear you didn't like Where Dreams Descend – I've been hearing only good reviews and I was thinking about checking it out, but now I'll reconsider and wait for more opinions!! I hope you have a lovely September, take care ❤ ❤

  17. Okay yes I may be a week late on this, BUT:
    1. I love you and I hope you’re doing okay
    2. College prep stuff is hell
    3. If you ever need help with editing college essays I will help you. I am 100% serious about this I work at the writing center so I’m a Professional and also I wrote 13?? applications?? for college??? and also I love you

  18. um hello May killing the game even at school!!! Seriously though WELL DONE bc I,,, read nothing in August. Except like some fanfic lmao. Lowkey loved it but also missed reading an actual book.

Take your time May!!! You’re doing amazing. Also on a sidenote, I may have a tip if you want to go back to classic classic editor. Idk if you interested👀

Hope you have a lovely September!! And best of luck with school YOU CAN DO IT

  19. I completely agree with you on the school part – it’s been so tiring! Sitting in front of a screen the whole day without actually learning anything, or even gaining any knowledge, because let’s be honest we all have another tab open, sadly schools probably aren’t gonna open soon so 😭😭
