…Long time, no see!
I said in my August recap post that it was very likely that I’d take a hiatus in September, and, as I always am, I was right!
I’ve been having a good time off from posting, and though I didn’t catch up on comments/posts like I’d hoped I would, this month was definitely better than August in terms of my health! Which I’m going to consider a win.
(We will ignore the lack of reading, the lack of writing, the lack of sleep…)
I read 4 books this month! Which is… a much smaller amount than I’d wanted!!
I don’t have much to say about the books I read this month, other than the fact that half of them were rereads and all of them were fantasies, so you could say I’m sorely in need of comfort from my favorite books/genre. I’m trying not to feel panicked about reading because why would I feel that way over a HOBBY, but I’m 4 books behind schedule on my Goodreads challenge, so I’m just… [yelling in the distance].
- The Titan’s Curse Rick Riordan // [reread] get you someone who will travel across the country and hold up the world just to save you… ★★★★★
- Iron Heart Nina Varela // I can describe this entire book in one word, and that word is: GAY (yearning) ★★★★☆ [3.5] [review]
- The Sword of Summer Rick Riordan // [reread] I thought I’d been wrong to rate this 3 stars when I first read it and upon reread I discovered that… I wasn’t wrong, but I love Magnus so much!! ★★★☆☆ [3.5]
- The Silvered Serpents Roshani Chokshi // I was bored for a majority of the book but oh my god, I absolutely lose my MIND over the ending!!! ★★★☆☆ [3.5]
updates
As I predicted, I took a short hiatus. I really am running low on content inspiration and overall motivation (if you have any kinds of posts you’d like to see from me, let me know!), so it’s hard to know if I’ll be posting a bunch this month. I missed writing posts and talking to you guys a lot!! But… I’ve been abhorrent at replying to comments, and I’d rather do that than continue to make content without responding.
Right now, I have two post ideas, so perhaps look forward to those! But I’d really like to get back into commenting/replying to comments—feel free to send me your latest post to check out <33
favorite posts from others
- Fadwa @ Word Wonders wrote an amazing discussion post about how the ownvoices label has lost its way, and I highly recommend giving it a read.
- Melanie @ Mel to the Any shared her Notion pages, as well as some templates you can use, and I love them so much!
- Lauren @ Love Yo Shelf wrote about lessons she learned as a new book blogger, and… even some of these I still need to be reminded of.
- Reads Rainbow made a list of sapphic science fiction books to read, and as someone who wants to read more sci-fi, I love it!!
- Sofia @ Bookish Wanderess shared some upcoming 2020 Latinx releases—so many of them look absolutely amazing!!
I didn’t work on my WIP, because I just had no time, energy, or inspiration to do it with school draining everything from me!! Which is bad, because I’d planned to start outlining it this month for NaNoWriMo next month, but this happens every year so I’m not surprised.
I didn’t write any poetry, but I was able to start on a short story! I didn’t finish it, but I think it’s fun to dip my toes into some new fresh idea just for a little bit. In the future, I definitely want to continue writing short stories regularly, just to practice and have fun!!
I’m still doing online school! I think I’ve settled into the pattern of doing everything online, and honestly… I’m kind of liking it? There are of course some things that I’d do a lot better with in person (and Zoom fatigue is very real), but I’m just kind of vibing now. However, I still hate school in general very much, and I would like to drop off the face of earth so I can stop experiencing this hell!!
Strangely, this month my mental health was… okay? I think it was a combination of getting used to school again, stressing less about blogging/reading/writing, and also going back to dance. I think dance genuinely is saving me right now—it takes my mind off things and it’s so freeing, and I’m just really grateful to have it. And being active 4/7 days a week, especially with Zoom classes all day, is amazing!!
The second best thing that happened to me this month was starting to use Notion! My friend Skye had introduced it to me a few months ago, but recently it got big on Twitter and had me feeling inspired. So I took the dive and I’m in love! Notion is a versatile website/app for organization, and I can’t wait to show you guys my pages on my blog soon. (Above is my current home page!) If you have any particular questions/things you’d like me to talk about, feel free to let me know!!
Media-wise: I started rewatching ATLA with my mom (her reactions are the cutest), continued watching Legend of Korra (I’m gay for Korra), rewatched Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse for the millionth time, got briefly re-obsessed with Miraculous Ladybug, watched Toy Story 4… Basically I am consuming media meant for 8 year olds. And I love it!
- read 9 books ✗ (to have the confidence of myself a month ago…)
- plot WIP ✗ (this is a problem)
- write 3 poems ✗
- write a short story… maybe? ✓ (I wrote about Death <3)
- keep up with Reader ✗
- reply to comments! ✓✗ (I did it at one point during the month..)
- do driver’s ed ✗
- work out ✓✗ (technically I didn’t actually Work Out, but I’ve been staying active through dance!)
- college prep ✓
- read 10 books (I have some shorter books planned + fall break so hopefully I can do it!)
- outline WIP for NaNoWriMo (this will go badly)
- keep up with Reader
- reply to comments!
- do driver’s ed (like… for real this month)
- get more sleep PLEASE (according to what I tracked in ~Notion~ I’m only getting an average of 6.7 hours…)
- college prep
I get a week off from school! Most schools in my area don’t have a week break in October, but it’s honestly a blessing. I really, really need a break and I’m so excited to just not worry about school things (as much) for a week. I’m hoping to get a lot of reading, writing, and blogging done during then!!
WIP outlining: I’m not sure if I’ll be able to come up with a good enough outline for me to be able to actually write 50k words in November, since what happens Every Single Year is that I… believe I can plot and outline in a single month, end up with half a page of an outline, and then ditch NaNo after five days. But you know what, I’ll be idealistic for once because these past few months have been completely full of pessimism!
how was your September? was your reading month better than mine? do you use Notion? I’ve missed you all, chat with me!! and if you have any blog posts/specific things for my Notion post you want to see, let me know!
p.s. for once I have a recap post that’s closer to 1k words than 2k. there’s a first time for everything!!
Sorry to hear that school is still being stressful, but I’m relieved to hear that online classes are working for you! I’ll be starting university again soon and almost all the classes will be online! I also … did no writing like I had planned to do and I won’t be participating in NaNo in this year, so we’ll see if I’ll ever finish editing this WIP 😅
I started using Notion as well!! And I love it so much 💕 It’s so practical and great for organizing, which I already love! I also love your homepage, it looks so cozy 🥰 I’d definitely love to see a Notion Tour Blog Post if you’d feel comfortable showing some of your pages 💞

thank you so much, caro! i hope university is going well for you, online is definitely a lot to get used to 😭 and aahh i’m glad i’m at least not alone in not writing much in september too! i’m wishing you luck with finishing your edits <3
i'm so happy you love notion!! it's definitely so motivational for me to get things, and it just looks so nice and clean 🥰 and yes, i think i'm 100% going to do a blog post on notion!

Welcome back from your hiatus, May! 🌸💕 September was a weitd kind of month for me, to be honest. I didn’t read much so I am hoping October gets better readingwise (I don’t really count on it though thanks to the start of uni!! agh send help). But I am excited for fall and this month 🦉🍁. I also started using Notion a week or two ago and I am feeling so organized (!!).

thank you so much, linda! i’m sorry you didn’t get to read a bunch in september, i think a lot of other people are slumping right now too so we’re not alone 😭 and yes i’m so excited about fall!! the end of the year is always my favorite time of year, and especially with this trashfire of a year haha

My September was meh. I started school which is very stressful, so that could definitely be going a lot better!!
Shows for 8 year olds really are the best though. I watched atla and legend of korra and both are amazing!! I wanted more at the end of legend of korra though…
Titan’s Curse is one of my favorite PJO books! It is sooo good and also we get an entire book of Zoë Nightshade.
And the ending of The Silvered Serpents was terrifying, and I don’t know how I’m going to wait for book 3.
I sort of tried using notion, but I didn’t really understand it. It seems cool though, and I should probably mess around with it for more than 15 minutes!!
Anyways, I hope that you have a good October!!

i’m sorry that your september was meh! totally understand how the stress you feel about school, i hope it lessens soon <3 and ah, i finished legend of korra a week ago and i agree! it felt like an abrupt ending (though i guess atla was a bit like that too)
i am so so excited for the third book for the gilded wolves!!! the stakes just keep getting higher and i just know book 3 is going to be so good. and yes, notion can definitely take a bit of time getting used to, but i think it's 100% worth it!!
i hope you're having a great october, aria 💕

the ending was abrupt, but also kind of amazing!
the stakes are so high at this point and severin better not put laila through anything else because what she had to go through in the last book was not okay
you too may!

Can you figure out a way to drop off the face of the earth so I can do that too? I’ve been in school for almost two months and my next break will be for Thanksgiving 😔 I’m also taking dance this year and I love it. But Zoom itself? I hate it (the struggles tho. they for real). And to make it even worse, California apparently doesn’t know when the seasons change and so the high today shall be 102. Help please 😭
I’m rewatching ATLA at the moment too! Oh my god I missed them. Korra was also really good and Korra and Asami = the cutest couple ever 😌👌
And no, I’ve never heard of Notion before. I’ll be looking forward to your Notion posts then ❤️

i hope school isn’t too hard to survive for you!! just a month left till thanksgiving break, you got this 🥺💓 and ahh i’m so glad you’re taking dance and loving it! i love meeting other dancers in the book community haha
i hope your atla rewatch is going well!! it’s making me all 🥺🥺 and yes i love korra and asami so much! i haven’t been able to stop thinking them after i finished legend of korra a week ago 😭

I’m so sorry about school and your mental health. I can’t even imagine. I’ve been done school for a while but I’m doing French training online and it’s SO WEIRD!! I’m not used to it at all. I’m glad to see you back though! I’ve never heard of this Notion thing but it looks neat

thank you so much, jenna <3 and ahh yeah, it is pretty strange to be doing all this with a pandemic going on! and i'd definitely recommend looking into notion (though i know you're a bujo kind of person!)

sending good thoughts your way; i’ve barely done any college research yet (twitter is causing me to procrastinate lol). my september went pretty well. i am happy to see others who’ve liked the ending of the silvered serpents as much as me.
and i think? i’m in the same grade as you? it’s starting to get harder. tbh i have an easy schedule since some days i end at 12:15 which is really early but it’s only because of my math 118 de class, which is alot of work. i’m just trying to take it day by day. in terms of balancing blogging/bookstagram/school/other extracurriculars, i definitely feel good since i threw out my blog/bookstagram schedule and it helped a lot since now my posts are a lot better (imo lol).
my birthday was also in september, which was so fun! finally 17, which feels a lot older than 16 (probably because i’m closer to 18 than 15). it was a lot of fun and i got four new books.

thank you, isabella! wishing you luck on your college research, i really need to start on it aahh 😭 and yes the ending of the silvered serpents was absolutely amazing!! it took my breath away to be honest
i’m sorry your classes are starting to get harder! taking it day by day is also something i’m trying to do. and i’m glad to hear that your blogging/bookstagram is going well — i don’t know how you’re doing it since i’m sorely lacking the time management skills lmao
yay for having a great birthday, especially amidst this hellfire!! <33

ahh thank you!!! your replies are always so kind and i love reading them. yeah i have to prioritize school right now, but i’m learning that i need to get off twitter when i am just hanging out and actually take pictures that i can post when i don’t have time to take good photos. and yeah that ending to serpents oh my gosh. i am re reading it right now and idk how roshani did it but she did and i am very emotional.

I’ve started college this year and I’ve surprisingly NOT had a mental breakdown? I’m shook. I have been procrastinating my schoolwork this week tho 😬 My dance appreciation class is out to get me.
I hope you continue to do well in school and have good mental health! And yeah, school really is hell :/

I am so happy that getting back to school is going well! I have also back in school and it’s weird but also good. Sometimes we just don’t read a lot in a month right? I really want to read Iron Heart!! I am very excited and also the cover is so amazing! Your Notion page looks so cool! It’s exciting that you are able to dance again! I hope that you have a wonderful October❤︎

I can totally relate to watching “Spiderman” and “Ladybug”. *lol* I love Spidey and my kid loves Ladybug so I kind of got into it too? It’s a really nice series and I dig the love story between Marinette and Adrien. *lol* And no, I won’t think about the fact that I’m probably – most certainly – too old for this. XD Anywayyyy… Four books is still good. Especially when you’re able to find comfort in them. PJ and Magnus Chase are such comfort reads. :D

i can rewatch into the spiderverse a million times, i’m convinced!! and yes aahh the love square (or hexagon counting the other characters) with marinette and adrien can be annoying but it’s definitely entertaining haha. and thank you so much, v 🥺 pjo truly gives me comfort like no other series!!

I started using Notion as well, and I’ve been setting it up this weekend. My goal is to completely finish setting up my tomorrow (having an end date will make sure I don’t procrastinate haha) and I’m actually close to finishing it! The only parts left are to shift all data from other places to Notion. The functionality and aesthetics are all set, which I’m super happy with.

I’m happy to know your health has improved! Though I hope you get more sleep this month 🤍 And I’m looking forward to your upcoming posts! Sadly, I’ve been lacking ideas, motivation and time as well. My classes have just started and I can already tell they’ll be extremely exhausting. But we all do our best! I’m very excited to read Iron Heart!! And your Notion page looks so pretty 🥰 I started using Notion a couple of years ago, but only now, with the hype on Twitter, did I learn how to make it pretty lol It’s a lifesaver! But while I love so many templates I see online, they seem so complex and my brain refuses to try to understand them, so I have to keep my simple 😅

thank you, marta! my mental health kind of went down this month haha but it’s picking up again <3 and i'm sending you so much love and strength for your classes!! i definitely know how you're feeling, we're in this together :(( and oh, i had no idea notion has been around for years! that's cool that it just started getting popular on twitter haha, but yeah the layouts i'd seen before recent times were not aesthetic-focused at all!

Yesss for hiatus’s especially when they’re needed to avoid more stress!! Gaah, I have a love-hate relationship with the Goodreads challenge because when you’re ahead it’s like yesss the POWER but when you’re behind it’s *the worst*. I’ve lowered my challenge twice this year already 😂 Also! I plan on reading the Korra graphic novels soon to help boost my challenge a bit. Which speaking of, def gay for Korra (omg her biceps) and pretty much everyone else in the show too.
I hope you’ve been having a great October! And that everything about your month, reading, blogging, and school wise go well 💕

i’m feeling the exact same way about my goodreads challenge ahh!! i always keep mine at 100 books, and i end up pushing myself to finish it no matter what in december, but it’s definitely…. very stressful now that we’re in the last few months of 2020. and yes!! i definitely am going to read the atla/tlok comics to help out my challenge lmao. and…. i am also so so gay for everyone in atla/tlok
i hope your october is going well for you!! 💘
