Mid-Year Check-In: How am I Doing on My Goals for 2021?

Ever year I am overconfident in setting my goals…

As I always do each year, today I’m taking a look at how I’m doing on my 2021 goals, now that we are somehow halfway through 2021 already. It’s always a fun surprise to do this post and reread these goals that I set in January and promptly forgot!

Whenever I do these check-ins, I feel like I overestimate my capabilities when setting my goals, but I think it also offers an opportunity to challenge and stretch myself. And I really do think checking in with my goals helps me to see what I can do for the rest of the year and realign my priorities, however cliche that may sound!!

  • Read 100 books. Right now I’m just BARELY behind on my reading challenge! I’m exactly halfway through my challenge, at 50 books, and I’m happy that not only is my reading quantity-wise doing well but also quality-wise.

  • Read more diversely. I am doing SO well at this goal, and it makes me really really happy. Fantasy still dominates my reading, but I’ve read more of other genres—my nonfiction reading has gone up this year! (Though it was a low bar because I usually read like… none.) It’s also the first year I’ve read more adult fiction than YA, and I think that represents my tastes so much more, especially looking at how most of the adult books I’ve read are highly rated while there are lots of low ratings for YA… I still would like to expand beyond reading just novels, but I’ve been missing comics so I’m definitely going to return to those!
  • Review at least 50% of what I read want to. I’m revising this goal, because I’ve realized that not every single book I read is one that I necessarily want to review. Out of the 38 books I’ve read this year and want to review, I’ve reviewed 21, so I’m definitely on track with this and I’m actually so proud of myself. It still takes me a long time to write reviews but I genuinely love writing them!

I’m actually considering writing a post about how drastically my reading has changed this past year, as well as one about what my review-writing process looks like, so (maybe) look forward to those!!

  • Draft a novel. [thinks of the multiple monthly recap posts I’ve written where I continuously said I could not think of any ideas for a novel] Ah yes, this one is going well.
  • Write poetry again. I haven’t written much lately, but I did write some pieces earlier this year! I’ve found that what/how I write is much more fitting for prose poetry, so I’ve loved exploring that style.

  • Write more in general. I sadly have not been writing a lot this year! I’ve written a few pieces here and there, and I wrote something that I think is my best piece to date, but I haven’t been writing as much as I wanted to. I think that’ll definitely change in the last half of the year, though, since I just feel like all this time not writing has me itching to get some words out.

  • Reach 3,000 followers. Honestly, I kind of feel like this isn’t an achievable goal for me anymore, considering how 1) I slacked with blogging for the first half of the year, and 2) that probably isn’t going to improve in the last half. And I’m okay with that! I’ve gotten to the point that I care less for numbers and stats, which is freeing.
  • Rebrand. I actually am not sure if I’m still going to go through with this…? I think I have so little inspiration for anything blogging-related in general, so I don’t think I have the energy to go through a whole rebrand.
  • Write posts in advance. I absolutely have not been doing this! <3

  • Continue learning Thai! I’m really happy to say that I’ve been doing a pretty good job of keeping up with my Thai studying!! I slacked a little bit near the end of the school year, but I’ve picked it back up again. I’ve become a lot more familiar with all the letters, I’ve learned the tone rules, and I’m improving at reading. Still a long way to go but I’m hoping to become more familiar with tones, learn more words, and be able to write well!

  • Listen to and play more music. Yes… I totally have been doing that… Me who has not touched the piano in over half a year…
  • Sleep and drink more water. I could be doing better. But I also could be doing worse!
  • *Get off my phone more. This is an added goal, because over the past few months I’ve seen myself spend an increasing amount of time on my phone, to the point that it’s kind of extremely concerning!! I’ve been spending this week off my phone more, and even though it’s only been a few days, it feels so refreshing (and I actually manage to get things done, who knew).

I honestly can’t believe we’re already halfway through 2021. It feels like it’s flown by and I feel like I can’t really gauge anything that happened/my own growth because I simply can’t remember. But I’m definitely happy with how well I’m doing with my reading goals and learning Thai in particular! For the rest of the year, I really do want to prioritize writing because I genuinely miss it so much. And while I still hold my blog very closely, I’ve accepted that this year is probably going to be a year I pull back a little because of being busy and having low inspiration. Thank you, as always, for sticking with me though!

shall we chat

if you made any goals for 2021, how are you doing on them? how’s your Goodreads challenge going? any plans for the rest of the year?

  1. Yay for doing well on your reading and reviewing goals! I feel you on not having idea and not wiring much – I did have a sudden burst of energy which gave me an interesting direction to take for my WIP but I haven’t really written much – I wanted to write 15k this month for Camp NaNo but seeing as I haven’t really even reached 3k, I don’t know how I’ll be doing that!

All the best for ebbing off of your phone more – it’s something I need to start doing too, it’s really becoming a problem!

    1. thank you! i’m glad you had a burst of energy for your wip and i hope you’re having a good writing month so far, regardless of whether or not you’re on track with your goal for camp nano <3

i have been using my phone more again, it definitely is so hard to break the habit 😭 hope we both can reduce our phone time!!

  2. ok i would love to know your adult fiction recs (especially if they’re fantasy/if you have time, i already know of jade war, tpw, she who became the sun, the unbroken, and the jasmine throne, which i all love OR know i will love) and your posts always brighten up my day!! this is kind of an on going life goal for me: don’t think too far into the future because i want to relax while also caring about school. i also hope to get all A’s/pass all my classes in my summer program and to finish my posse app this week/college apps by november so i can watch the witcher in december when it comes out. as for books, i like the goal of reading more adult fiction because i’ve noticed i’ve read a lot of YA contemporary this year, which isn’t bad, but i want to challenge myself – i’m also interested in history for college so i’m hoping to find books by historians who are poc because the one’s i’ve been sent by an org i work with are all by white men.

    1. aahh okay tbh i read a lot of the more well-known adult books so you’ve probably already heard of these, but from adult fantasy i’ve enjoyed the bone shard daughter, black sun, and black water sister. some novellas i’ve enjoyed are the deep (rivers solomon) and the murderbot diaries, and a short story collection i loved was the tangleroot palace!

“don’t think too far into the future … to relax while also caring about school” i love that so much!! definitely want to do that too. i want to finish all my college apps early as well, i hope we both can achieve that! 💕 and i hope you enjoy all the adult books you read! it’s definitely been so rewarding to read outside of ya, even though i still love ya. good luck with finding history books by poc <33

  3. I love reading these check-in posts ❤ I’m also trying to read more out of my comfort zone and I’m surprised to see that I read more nonfiction as the years go on 😄 My writing has been nonexistent since I started my Master’s studies but I wish you all the best luck with your projects! 🥰

  4. proud of all your progress bb! i’m trying my best to keep my time on my phone to a minimum, too, considering how much time i spent on it last year during the lockdown (and the beginning of this year, too), but it’s been tough. I hope you’re not too hard on yourself about it!

  7. Hi!!! Back for my once in every few months check-in!! :)
Wow!!! I saw that you’re learning Spanish, French, and Thai?? That is so very impressive to me I’m barely making it through with just Spanish.
How’s the license going?? I think we talked about that last time I dropped in. Also, have you been thinking about college??? 2022 is coming soooo quickly. I still think about our little 2017 doc :’)
    Hope you are good :))

        1. ahh! ¿puedes hablar mucho español?

thank you!! i’ve been practicing a lot more this month and i think i can get my license next month actually! and lol i don’t think any teenager is following those rules about how many people you can drive with

ah i took my sat earlier in the year and did well enough that i don’t have to worry about it anymore, but good luck on your act!! i’m sure you’ll do well <3

  8. Congrats on being on point with your reading goals, especially with trying to add nonfiction. I’m trying to add some into my reading as well and since I’ve been burned out on sff I’ve had more of an opportunity lately.

I need to learn/accept that it is okay to not write a review for every book that I read. The pressure I put on myself is intense and unnecessary like WHY. Kudos to you!

  9. Is September too late to do a goals check in post? To be honest I’m avoiding updating everyone on how I’m doing on my goals, because I’m behind on all but one of them, or completely changed course for some. So I guess I’ll just have to come to terms with how I did at the end of the year, and keep all my progress a mystery until then!

    1. never too late! it could be like a… three quarters through the year kind of update 😭 honestly i don’t even want to look back on my goals now because i feel like i’m definitely falling behind now oops!! i hope we both manage to follow our goals by the end of the year though <3
