Pride Flag Book Tag // Spreading YA Queer Book Love Based on the Color Stripes & Meanings of the Pride Flag!!

It’s PRIDand I’m going to rainbow your day today!!

This tag was created by Common Spence over on YouTube, and that’s where I got the questions from. Please watch their video, they gave a bit of a history lesson and the books they mentioned are all A+!

Anyways, I’m SUPER excited to be doing this tag, because it’s kind of a salute to some of the community’s history and how the Pride flag was made, and I also get to talk about more queer books!!

Random note: It was super hard for me not to try and coordinate cover colors with the color that the question was talking about. Sometimes it happened unintentionally and it just made me angry that the other covers didn’t match!! It hurts my eyes!!!!

(Also, I added one more prompt to this tag, because I thought it important to include! If you do this tag and choose to use my added prompt, please note that it isn’t part of the original tag. Not because I want to make the creator look bad, but because I don’t want something being added without it clarified that it wasn’t part of the original!)

 1. red (life) ❤

a book with a spirited protagonist totally proud of who they are. someone who gives you LIFE!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HugoTHE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO

This book is truly amazing. It’s extremely well-written, tackles so many important issues, and most of all, is about a woman unafraid to be herself and take what she wants in a world that didn’t give her anything.

Evelyn Hugo is unapologetically bisexual. She’s had seven husbands (seven!!! how can I be as enchanting as her??) but only one woman had her heart in her whole life. Their relationship is BEAUTIFUL and Evelyn is completely proud of her bisexuality and her Cuban heritage, even if it was erased so she could live a privileged life.

WILD BEAUTYWild Beauty

Pretty much all the girls here are bisexual, Latina, and proud. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL, not to mention that Anna-Marie McLemore’s books in general are just gorgeous and written stunningly.

(Is this proud-to-be-bi thing a trend in YA? I’m so here for it.)

It’s so normalized too? Estrella is literally like “oh, I like girls just like I like boys and it’s fine, I really don’t care” and it’s so empowering and inspiring to see that. PLUS there’s also a genderqueer character and they’re also unapologetically themselves as well!!

fae divider (2)

🧡 2. orange (healing) 🧡

a book that made you, as the reader, find a deeper meaning or catharsis in your own life

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Creekwood, #1)SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA

I know I know, you’ve all heard about this book by now. But this book literally started my questioning journey with the simple-but-not-so-simple question, “Why is straight the default?”

And then coming back and rereading it, after a year had passed and I had figured out that I wasn’t the default, was so cathartic. There were so many things Simon experienced or thought that I related a lot to, and it made me tear up.

PLUS!!! The movie adaptation of this book made me bawl and it means so much to me!!!

(Wouldn’t this have been nice with the red…)

fae divider (2)

💛 3. yellow (sunshine) 💛

a book that fills you with so much joy it could brighten even your darkest day

SIX OF CROWSSix of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)

If I had to pick a favorite book ever, it would probably be this book. (PROBABLY. I said probably.) This book is… so high quality, and I literally could not stop smiling when I reread it last year.

These characters are THE WORLD to me, and their interactions are gold. I love them so so much. And their relationships? I LOVE THEM. Not only the romantic ones (those are amazing) but the platonic ones as well. I just. adore them. I adore them all.

(And the prompt is so true with this one. If I ever was feeling bad, all I have to do is look up some fanfic of this or read a couple of chapters and I’d feel better.)

Heartstopper (Heartstopper, #0.1)HEARTSTOPPER

THIS MAKES ME SO GENUINELY HAPPY. These two boys are so soft and they are SO. CUTE. together and I just jldkfjslkjfdldsjljfd. I remember one night, at 12am, I was having a really bad day, and I decided to read something that made me happy. I chose this.

At 1am I went to bed, smiling and feeling all types of warm and fuzzy and comforted after reading this. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

fae divider (2)

💚 4. green (nature) 💚

a book that is set out of this world—a reality different to our own

This prompt was a little weird to me and I was kinda like ??? on what I would choose, but why not go with a book I read recently from my Pride TBR, and one that is EXTREMELY underhyped??

THE ABYSS SURROUNDS USThe Abyss Surrounds Us (The Abyss Surrounds Us, #1)

This book is set in a (VERY INTERESTING) sci-fi world where the United States is split into different sections, and many people live on the water or in floating cities. There are creatures called Reckoners who destroy pirate ships, and the main character, a Chinese girl named Cas, is a Reckoner trainer.

But then things happen and Cas winds up on a pirate ship. And oh my god, I ABSOLUTELY ADORED THIS STORY. The slowburn enemies-to-lovers f/f relationship KILLED me and I ship them so so much. Plus this book has the perfect morally grey characters and I love it.

fae divider (2)

💙 5. blue (peace) 💙

a book where one of the characters finds peace with a difficult truth

Summer Bird BlueSUMMER BIRD BLUE

This was absolutely GORGEOUS and nothing less of what I expected from Akemi Dawn Bowman. I actually CRIED (and you know how rare that is), and I am so glad I was able to read this. It’s a truly, truly beautiful story and I can’t wait until this releases and you all will be able to read it.

Throughout the book, Rumi struggles to deal with her sister’s death*, her grief, and how her mother “abandoned her”. She also, on top of all of this, is trying to figuring out her sexuality.

(In the end, she says she most likely IDs as asexual and somewhere on the aromantic spectrum! The rep is very well done. She is also multiracial.)

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, #1)ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE

This is another of my favorite queer books, and I think it fits well with this prompt. This book is about a boy named Ari(stotle), who struggles with his sexuality and what it means for him and his best friend, Dante. It focuses a lot on the characters and I ADORE IT.

Plus, this takes place in the 80s (or 90s? I don’t know?) where there’s a lot of homophobia. As Mexican boys, it’s hard for Ari and Dante, and it would be even harder if they were gay. This book tackles those things perfectly and beautifully.

Note: This author has harassed reviewers previously.

*This is not a spoiler! It’s in the blurb of the book.

fae divider (2)

💜 6. purple (spirit) 💜

a book that deals with LGBT+ themes and religion

AutoboyographyAUTOBOYOGRAPHY

Tanner is a bisexual, half-Jewish boy who’s moved to a town in Utah, where pretty much everyone is Mormon, and pretty much everyone doesn’t like/support/”agree with” being anything but allocishet. Sebastian is gay, but he struggles to come to terms with that, especially because he’s Mormon and the son of a pastor.

I love this book, but I think it was also because I read it at the right time? It was after I had figured everything out sexuality-wise, but I wasn’t in a good mental health space. So watching Sebastian coming to terms with his sexuality 1) made me heartbroken, but also 2) made me so genuinely happy.

Also, a note that this book does not bash on the LDS church at all! It’s written in a respectful way while still being able to criticize the way it treats / views gay people.

fae divider (2)

🖤 ADDED. black/brown (inclusivity) 🖤

a book where one of the characters is a queer character of color / queer indigenous character

GIRLS OF PAPER AND FIREGirls of Paper and Fire

This book is AMAZING. I love it I adore it I stan it forever and ever.

This book is THE book of my Asian sapphic heart. First of all, the f/f relationship here is absolutely GORGEOUS and BEAUTIFUL and I just… love them together so so much. Second of all, being queer is so normalized here and I love it.

And third, THERE IS SO MUCH ASIAN CULTURE. I’m pretty sure the main character is Southeast Asian, because this is based off of the author’s experiences in Malaysia (which is in Southeast Asia). Which makes my Southeast Asian heart SING! because I’ve never seen a lot of that part of me repped. And it’s sapphic on top of that!!!!

Anyways. I’ll be posting a review on my blog closer to the release date but this is yet another book you’ll hear me screaming about!!

shall we chat

how’s your (pride) month going?? have you read any beautiful queer books? hopefully you’ve added all of these to your TBR (i mean i’ve mentioned them like 398523 times now) and did you notice i refrained from talking about girl made of stars for once in my life???

  1. Amazing post, May! For some reason I never realized the Pride flag had separate meanings for each stripe color, and I think that’s so cool. Thanks for teaching me about that. 😉 Also, thank you for all the recs! I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned, but so many of them are on my TBR and I truly want to read them soon!

  2. This is such an amazing post, May! I love that you added the black/brown prompt to the tag (thank you for doing so!); inclusivity is definitely important. ❤ I've read Simon vs, Heartstopper, Aristotle and Dante, and Autoboyography, and I completely agree with your descriptions of them. 🙂 I absolutely love this post and I can't wait to check out the books that I haven't read! (I'm especially excited to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Summer Bird Blue, and Girls of Paper and Fire! …Honestly who am I kidding, I'm excited to read all of them HAHA.)

    1. Thank you so much! And of course, I’m a queer person of color myself so inclusivity and recognizing intersectional identities is so important to me ❤ Oooh, I hope you love all of those books!! Evelyn Hugo and Girls of Paper and Fire are two of my favorites of the year, and Summer Bird Blue was just… gorgeous. 😍

  3. The tag idea would be cool, if homosexuality weren’t an utterly twisted thing. God created two genders, male and female. He intended for them to be fruitful and multiply, and he created a wonderful thing called marriage to allow them to create new life with assistance from him. Together, they can create new life. If you know anything about biology, then you’ll know that in order for a baby to be created, there needs to be a mother and a father, It’s physically and biologically impossible for gay people to have children, which is the sole reason for marriage, besides love. If they can’t create new life, then they can’t get married. I understand that homosexual attractions aren’t something people choose to have, but they can control their actions, and engaging in gay ”marriage” is wrong and sinful. The Bible even says this; You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22).
Think about it, May. Eternity is a long time to be wrong.

    1. so you’re really just… going to leave a long comment trying to convince me that a part of who I am is wrong when 1) there is not a single inch of me that will believe you and you know it and 2) you can literally just ignore this post and go on living your life and not hurt people?? cool

also lmao what if I told you not everyone believed in God and that they aren’t obligated to live their life according to what a religious book may or may not have said

      Liked by 11 people

    2. Bahaha, this is hilarious. Eternity being wrong? You never stopped to consider you may just be the wrong one? It goes both ways. The Bible says a lot of things and hopefully since you are throwing rocks you follow them all. Hopefully no one in your family is divorced cause heck scriptures on that, such as Matthew 5:32. How about Leviticus 11:12 since you seem to want to quote from there, that tells you not to eat creatures of the sea that do not have fins or scales? Or how Leviticus 11:7 says no pork for you! Better not be wearing anything made of 2 materials either, it’s in the same chapter! In Deuteronomy 25:5-10 if 2 brothers live under the same roof and one is married and dies without children, the brother has to marry the brother’s wife. Most of this is seen as ridiculous in a modern world, but still you come to someone’s blog and post about it because you hold tight to outdated religious viewpoints. You also are cherry-picking the parts of the Bible you will follow based on your prejudicial viewpoints that you want to push onto others. Go away and leave people alone in their own spaces. Also, no I am not a Christian by any means, but I have Google and the ability to look at a book to show whatever points I want to make as well, so grow up and again leave people alone in their own spaces! Thanks, Bye Felicia!

  4. SO. Here’s a giant comment of happy thoughts to counteract that nasty negative comment.
I’ve heard a billion good things about The Seven Husbands ever since reading about it on your blog AND OBVIOUSLY THAT IS A GOOD SIGN. Everything about it seems wonderful af.
Saaaaaame on Simon vs, the whole gay teen in Georgia was. Incredibly Relatable, to say the least, and is part of why this book is also incredibly special to me.
HEARTSTOPPER IS SUCH A HAPPY COMIC AND IT NEVER FAILS TO CHEER ME UP AND I’M JUST GOING TO CRY FOREVER ABOUT IT OK
There are too many books in here that I haven’t read????? What is this. I must read all of them. Your little blurbs are fantastic and absolutely make me want to go out and buy the books this very instant with the money I don’t have. (HOWEVER- I checked out an anthology called ALL OUT from the library recently and absolutely devoured it in one sitting. It’s a collection of historical fiction stories about queer teens and it made me so incredibly happy! It’s got a story by Anna-Marie McLemore, too!)
HAPPY PRIDE!! May your days from here on out be free from nasty homophobic comments, and thanks for this incredibly happy post!!

    1. Evi you’re the best and I truly adore you and you’re actually a ball of sunshine in human form 💓💓💓

Evelyn Hugo is so good and you better love it if/when you read it!!! And I’m not from Georgia (and instead Texas) so the conservative environment thing in Simon was really relatable and such an important part to include. ❤ And YES HEARTSTOPPER IS SO GENUINELY HAPPINESS-INDUCING AND I LOVE IT!!

Omg thank you so much I usually suck at writing book descriptions/blurbs?? And oh yes, I loved All Out! It's such a great anthology and there are so many beautiful stories in it 😍 (I feel like rereading certain ones right now haha)

I hope you have the best Pride and I'm wishing you all the happiness in the world!!! ❤

  5. Love this tag 🙂 So many great books on here that I still need to read!
I can’t wait to do this tag some point this month! Also I’m definitely adding your prompt whenever I create mine.

  6. Hahaha, yes, I have, in fact, added all of these books to my TBR already, thanks to you and others constantly screaming about them (which is a good thing of course!), and I want to read some of them (read: ALL of them) so badly!

Also so many good books on here that I have read… Simon Vs, Heartstopper, The Abyss Surrounds Us… And of course Six of Crows, which I’m obsessed with. (And also currently rereading! And I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!)

And honestly this is such an awesome tag… I sort of really want to steal it, but I just like, legit do not have answers for most of them… So I guess I won’t… 😦

And also yuck, I’m sorry you’re getting gross homophobic comments. It’s really maddening and sickening, and I am so disgusted. It has taken all my willpower not to write a furious response to that comment (because I honestly think any response I write would do more harm than good.), so instead I’ll just say here how gross and wrong I think it is, and URGH, I am so disgusted!

    1. Aaahh, yay I’m so glad you’ve added them to your TBR!! I hope you can read them soon and enjoy them ❤ And YES rereading Six of Crows is always the smart move. (And omg it makes me so happy to see people who have read Abyss! Not many people I know have read it haha.)

Thank you so much. ❤ I honestly don't know why they feel like they have to comment something like that when they could just… not, but it is what it is 🙄 Everyone's support has been amazing though, including yours!!! 💖

  7. This was such a good tag!!!!!!! I’m adding them all to my TBR IMMEDIATELY because this month I’ve realized that I’ve read approximately 1 book in my whole life with LGBTQ+ rep, and that’s super bad so i’m 100% going to work on that in the futureeeee!! I love hearing your recommendations and I love the addition to the tag 🙂

  8. I love this post so much, May, thank you for ALL the wonderful recommendations!
I have been hearing about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo everywhere, I’m so glad you enjoyed it so much as well – I might have to add it to my TBR, too, haha. I also sooo need to read Wild Beauty and all books by McLemore, because I have a feeling I would LOVE all of her books so, so much and I can’t wait to try them out 😀
Also, I haven’t read Starfish just yet ( I know, I NEED TO), but I also added Summer Bird Blue on my TBR because it sounded so great and damn, you make it sound even better, I CAN’T WAIT! 😀

Just as I'm confident you'll love Starfish, I'm absolutely certain you'll love Summer Bird Blue. I mean, I know you love friendships and discovering yourself sooo 😉

The Abyss Surrounds Us sounds like the best thing ever oh my god?? I mean, a sci-fi world, pirates, moral greyness and a f/f relationship?? Where do I sign up. This book has my name written all over it lmao

Aahh I'm confident that you'll love The Abyss Surrounds Us, then! It's such a great book with so many amazing tropes and it's TRULY underrated. ❤

  11. I love this tag May, it’s a brilliant way to highlight some great LGBT releases and celebrate Pride month as well! 😀 I’d love to take part in this tag but I have literally no time to post this in June and it seems a little strange to take part after Pride month is over (maybe I could save it for next year, who knows?)
These are all brilliant books as well. Simon Vs is definitely healing, it’s just amazing and the movie is just as brilliant right? Also I can’t wait to get around to Autoboyography. After everything I’ve heard about it I just know it’s going to be incredible! 😀
Great post, and great picks for this tag too. 🙂 ❤

  12. All of these books sound so good! Especially since it’s been hard finding new recs when the library’s pride section is currently in a drought (and some other unfortunate things– people started screaming during an LGBT+ positive event which honestly sucks). I’ve heard so many good things about Summer Blue Bird! Also, happy belated Ari and Dante day!

  13. I love this! I absolutely must read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Girls of Paper and Fire; they sound incredible. Thanks so much to alerting me to The Abyss Surrounds Us because, erm, enemies-to-lovers sci fi f/f is EVERYTHING I need. And aw yes, I know what you mean about Heartstopper – every time I read an update it feels me with warmth and joy. 🙂 If it’s okay, I would really love to do this tag on my blog — hopefully I can squeeze it into the rest of Pride Month ahaha.

  14. This post is so lovely, May!! I’m super flipping excited to read The Abyss Surrounds Us (just got it in at my library). And now I’m looking forward to Heartstopper, thanks for putting it on my TBR 😀 Have you heard of Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu? I don’t even like hockey lol (aside from the perfection that is The Mighty Ducks trilogy GOOOOOLDBERG), but it’s so frickin cute and fun.

And that homophobic comment what the actual flimflam? So anyone who doesn’t have or want children, or can’t have children, or has children outside of marriage is also ?? Ugh, I don’t even feel sorry for that sad little person. Shoo.

Sending you, May, and every other person on this post hugs and light and love and mangoes. ❤
