May’s Moments of the Month: February // Texas Winter Storm but a New Favorite Book!

This month was exhausting.

If my accidental posting hiatus was any indication, I was so tired in February. I’ve been so busy with school, and when I don’t have schoolwork, I am just numbly lying in my bed on my phone. I will say that I had a better mental health month (thank you for all the warm wishes, by the way!!), and there were some good things that happened! Mainly getting to read enjoyable books and also finding a new absolute favorite. But amongst that was a winter storm that left me without power for days and a permeating, overwhelming exhaustion so… not quite the best.

I was very fortunate during the winter storm, but so many others were not, so if you have the means to, maybe consider donating to some TX mutual aid groups: AustinHoustonDallas!

mmm reading

I read 7 books this month! I read exactly one (1) of the ARCs I was supposed to read this month… I’m not even surprised anymore by my inability to stick to a TBR, especially as my ability to focus on reading books has deteriorated considerably. I ended up impulsively picking up many middle grade audiobooks, which was pretty much the only way I was able to read quickly!

The Okay Witch (The Okay Witch, #1)  When We Were Infinite  Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky (Tristan Strong #1)  Lalani of the Distant Sea

  • The Okay Witch Emma Steinkeller // this was fun! great themes of family and friendship, and the history of the witches and their magic was interesting to read ★★★☆☆
  • When We Were Infinite Kelly Loy Gilbert // when I finished this, it felt like I had just been punched in the chest. hard to read with so much focus on mental health, but breathtakingly written. RTC! ★★★★☆ [4.5]
  • Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky Kwame Mbalia // this book truly captures the heart of middle grade! such well-written, important messages about trauma and grief but with fun adventures and characters ★★★★☆
  • Lalani of the Distant Sea Erin Entrada Kelly // this was so lyrical and poignantly beautiful, and a bit darker than expected! a very touching story about community and bravery ★★★☆☆ [3.5]

She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1)  Efrén Divided  Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 2

  • She Who Became the Sun Shelley Parker-Chan // 100% going to be in my best reads of the year: the character work was phenomenal, the writing was exquisite, and I am RUINED by the ending. RTC! ★★★★★ [4.5]
  • Efrén Divided Ernesto Cisneros // this definitely got a few tears out of me! a hopeful yet realistic story about immigration and deportation, with so much care towards the importance of family and friendship ★★★☆☆ [3.5]
  • Witch Hat Atelier Vol 2 Kamome Shirahama // the art is stunning and the witches are all SO CUTE!! I very much love this manga series and I cannot wait to continue (the magic is so intriguing!) ★★★★☆

UPDATES

Well… I accidentally ended up taking a break. I’ll go into more depth about what I’ve been up to in life later, but I just had little time and motivation for blogging, so I simply didn’t force myself to do it. I’m truly not sure if I’ll be able to post a lot in March either, because I really am prioritizing life/school at the moment, and I feel no excitement over any types of post ideas right now :(

Also, not a personal update, but what is going on with WordPress? Why am I now writing my posts in tiny Times New Roman?? I do not blog to feel like I am writing essays for school!!

THIS MONTH’S POSTS

mmm writing

I didn’t write too much this month, but I did write a piece that I actually edited and polished to make a final draft of. I usually just let words spill from me and don’t really go back to edit them, so it was fun (and a bit excruciating!) to actually work with a piece and improve it for the first time in a while. I also applied to be an editor for an online literary magazine, so we’ll see how that turns out!

mmm life

I am just dead. There truly is no other way to put it. I feel so tired and burnt out, so stressed yet numb at the same time. School in the pandemic is really getting to me—I am mindlessly doing my assignments, becoming incredibly demotivated to do anything, and steadily failing to actively focus on anything. The only thing I’m looking forward to is my spring break in a few weeks, and even that comes with some dread because I have the SAT right before it.

February WAS better for me than January was in terms of mental health, but I’m just so… exhausted? And I know it won’t fade away as we head into March, which marks a year since COVID changed everything. I’m just going to try to take it easy and give myself some grace, which I hope you all do as well!

I also was affected by the Texas winter storm that swept through a few weeks ago! My power was out for 2 days and it was VERY cold in the house, but I was lucky to have working water and gas, as well as a fireplace. The snow was SO thick, and while it was magical, it was also hard to celebrate it knowing 1) people were dying, and 2) it was a very real reminder of climate change.

But some good news! Near the end of the month, I was more adamant about doing self-care. I started to actually, actively make an effort to drink much more water and get more sleep, and it really helped my mood!! (For the first time in genuinely at least a decade, I drank 8 cups of water in a day, which was a very big moment for me, and also probably very appalling to hear for all you normal hydrated people.)

mmm old goals

  • read 8 books
  • finish my novella WIP
  • start developing a novel idea (I thought about it for like 5 minutes)
  • post at least 4 times
  • get >7.4 hours of sleep  (!!!)
  • college prep
  • driver’s ed

mmm new goals

  • read 8 books
  • finish my novella WIP
  • start developing a novel idea
  • get >7.5 hours of sleep
  • college prep
  • continue drinking lots of water
  • learn Thai tone rules!

mmm looking ahead

Spring break!! The end of the school quarter is coming up soon, which means a much-needed week off. (I mean, I already had a week off school this month but that was because of the winter storm.) Again, there’s some apprehension attached to my excitement, because of the COVID one year anniversary thing, but I will finally get to REST. Especially right after taking the SAT!

shall we chat

how was your February? who is ready for March? did you find any new favorite books? is there any particular content you’d like to see from me? (besides writing-related stuff because 👁👄👁 I don’t have enough to talk about yet)

  1. I’m glad that your mental health was at least a bit better this month! Oh my goshhhh ugh I really want to read She Who Becomes the Sun it sounds so good! I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!
I did hear about the storm, I’m glad that you’re okay!
Yay, I’m glad you’re doing better with self care! Haha, I don’t know the last time I drank the amount of water that is recommended, I usually drink a ridiculously low amount, yikessss.
Best of luck on your SATs and you’re so lucky that you get a break this month! I have 0 breaks this month aside from weekends, not even one-day holidays. My school conveniently places our break on the week of president’s day so that we’re technically only missing 4 days of school that we wouldn’t already have missed.
Oh gosh, I feel like my comments are always so long on your blog, sorry! I’ll stop now.

      1. I hope so too! I loved Song of Achilles so I’m really hoping to love this one as well.

Haha yeahhhh I definitely need to drink more water…I’ve never really felt affected by it though? (*flashback to two weeks ago when I felt dizzy all day* uuuuh). Well, I hope that you have a good break!

  2. Ohh now I’m more excited to read She Who Become the Sun! And I thought it’s my wordpress only?? Like I thought there’s something wrong with the internet connection.

I’m so sorry February hasn’t been a great month for you, especially with the burn out and the winter storm. I’m glad you and your family are safe. I’ve been really exhausted with all the technologies required in day to day life, it feels so tiring to look at screens 24/7 but at the same time, I feel like I’m losing my ability to focus on non-tech screen, if that makes sense? Like it took me so long to get through physical books but not e-books… It scares me tbh.

    Have a great March!

    1. she who became the sun is AMAZING and i’m sure you’ll love it!! and ah no, i’ve seen some other people mention the font change too unfortunately 😭

yes, it really is exhausting to be staring at a screen for like 10 hours a day! even when i’m not doing work, i like to relax with tv, which only means more screens 😭 and ooh, i think i’m the opposite! i can’t focus on ebooks right now, i’m better with physical and audiobooks (i guess my eyes are too tired haha)

hope you have a wonderful march as well! 💕

  3. Yes, they changed the WP editor somehow? It’s…wider, or something? It drove me nuts when I first noticed, and it’s still driving me nuts!

Sorry about the storm and all the business in your life! I hope you find more time for blogging and reading soon!

  6. Oh wow, I’m glad it wasn’t just me that noticed that font change in the editor! I thought I was losing the plot and was somehow imaging it! Sorry to hear this month has not been the greatest, though it does look like things are looking up a bit? At least you had some very good reads :) And I’m so pleased to see another high rating for She Who Became the Sun – I got approved for an ARC and I just keep seeing high praise so I can’t wait for it to destroy me~
Let’s hope Spring will come round soon as I noticed myself I was a lot cheerier on the days that it was sunnier so I’m crossing everything that that theory is correct, though I’m not usually affected by seasonal swings.
If you want something new and lovely, I adored The Mask of Mirrors in February!

  7. I’m sorry to hear that February was a rough month—I can’t even imagine what an ordeal it must have been going through that whole winter storm. I’m glad you’re okay!

Ahhh I’m so happy that you loved She Who Became the Sun, and now I’m more excited than ever to read it!! Middle grade audiobooks are also fantastic :D

Yeah, I get the feeling that March is going to be a tough month for everyone—I certainly know it will be for me—and taking it easy and being kind to ourselves is important. I hope things start looking up for you, May <3 Happy March!

  8. The winter storm was such a nightmare! It hit where I am too, but I was lucky to be in power and heat — it’s so tiring and disorienting to have days where there’s no power. But it looks like you read some amazing stuff anyway! Erin Entrada Kelly is just consistently warm and great, and She Who Becomes the Sun is one of my most anticipated books of the year.

I’m glad to know you were doing better in February, regarding your mental health, but I’m still very sorry to hear about all the bad things 😭😭 Hopefully, March will be better and you’ll get some well-deserved rest 💕 I’m sending you lots of love!! (random, but I also noticed the font change and I was so confused ??)

  10. Take your time with everything! Your mental health is so important so remember to take care of yourself!! You’ve made me so excited for When we were infinite and especially for She who became the sun. I NEED IT!! My February was…not it, lol. I fell into a life slump (stopped writing, reading, enjoying things in general) but I’m better now! I’m so exciting to be reading and writing again, so let’s tackle those goals together!

Also, I just found your blog and I’m in looove!

I'm glad you enjoyed so many books this month! When we were infinite was a great read, it was a little too much for me to handle, but I loved the focus on friendships for sure.
I hope March has been kind to you <3
