May’s Moments of the Month: July // A Really Hot, but Great Vacation, Lots of Good Books, Plus Pain and Rashes!!

I was on a blog hiatus this month, and it was so much fun.

Not sure if it was fun BECAUSE I took a hiatus, or it was fun and I additionally took a hiatus? But either a way, I was on hiatus, because I was on vacation, and it was fun! And I’m super glad to be back, I feel so refreshed and ready to get back into blogging.

The majority of this month was super good to me and I’m really grateful that my last month of summer wasn’t horrible. I read and got a lot of books, had fun with my family, and was mostly relaxed!

Really important note: So I wrote the majority of this post before I knew this, but… my mom’s cancer has returned after over 5 years of being cancer-free. I don’t know what this means for my online presence (especially since I know being active online helps me distract myself from things) but any kind of support would be appreciated. 💛

mmm reading

This month. I read. TEN BOOKS. TEN BOOKS. TEN BOOKS. I’m honestly… so proud of myself?? This is the most I’ve read in forever?? Not to mention the fact that I was on VACATION and had dance all day for three days and was getting ready to go back to school.

I was trying to finish an eleventh book yesterday but after having barely read anything and then getting the news about my mom, I just gave up.

I also got obsessed with a new series and I love it so much and no, I will not shut up about it Karen get used to it. I’ve been addicted to the fanfics, the tumblr posts, the fanart… just all of it.

And! I made a bookstagram account!! You can follow me @foreverandeverly_ if you wanna!!! In my first post I talked about why I hesitated to make one, but I think I made the right decision, and I’m super excited about it!!

Smoke and Iron (The Great Library, #4)  City of Ghosts  Our Stories, Our Voices: 21 YA Authors Get Real About Injustice, Empowerment, and Growing Up Female in America  The Foxhole Court (All for the Game, #1)  The Raven King (All for the Game, #2)

The King's Men (All for the Game, #3)  The Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3)  Nimona  The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4)  Life Before Legend: Stories of the Criminal and the Prodigy (Legend, #0.5)

  • Smoke and Iron Rachel Caine [♦] not as engaging as the previous books + still fun and enjoyable though!! + TOO MANY POVS + but also I love Khalila and Wolfe ★★★☆☆ [3.5]
  • City of Ghosts Victoria Schwab [♦] unfortunately, disappointing + I liked the characters, setting, and atmosphere + but it felt so short and the plot was underdeveloped??? + I’m ANNOYED ★★★☆☆ [blog review coming!]
  • Our Stories, Our Voices [Anthology] Amy Reed and other various authors [♦] so many important stories and voices were included!!! + all authors were marginalized except one + super feminist and I LOVE IT ★★★★☆ [4.5]
  • The Foxhole Court Nora Sakavic [♦] this is the series I’m obsessing over + can’t even think about this without tearing up + I’m just,,,, + order of favs: Nicky, Neil, Andrew ★★★★☆
  • The Raven King Nora Sakavic [♦] so much hurt in this book + it was Wild + it hurts to think about this + I hate Riko Moriyama + order of favs: Neil, Nicky, Andrew ★★★★☆
  • The King’s Men Nora Sakavic [♦] obsessed + love them all + still can’t stop thinking about this series + won’t ever stop loving this series + order of favs: Andrew, Neil, Nicky ★★★★☆ [4.5]
  • The Titan’s Curse Rick Riordan [♦] continuation of series reread + (since I couldn’t read anything after AFTG) + LOVE IT + almost teared up even though this is my 3rd reread ★★★★★
  • Nimona Noelle Stevenson [♦] SUBTLE GAY I LOVE + disabled lead!!! + so many trope subversions + I ?? really like the open ending ??? + overall a nice surprise! ★★★★☆
  • The Battle of the Labyrinth Rick Riordan [♦] The First Kiss™ + I love Percabeth SO MUCH + this one was Such a Ride + I don’t know how I rated it only 4 stars before ★★★★★
  • Life Before Legend Marie Lu [♦] June was lowkey annoying in this one + and Day was acting a Lil Weird + but it still makes me wanna reread the trilogy ★★★☆☆ [3.5]

book haul?

For some reason, my brain calculates money differently abroad??? Like I bought $34 worth of books in Thailand and my brain was like “that’s nothing”, yet if I did that in the States, I would start thinking “oh god gotta save up too broke for this”.

I bought Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda because I KNOW I’m going to reread it and this book is so special to me that I have to own a copy. Also it’s a special edition and has more emails between Simon and Blue. :))

I also bought I Was Born for This and, after much debate, The Cruel Prince. I have a VERY strong feeling I’ll love IWBFT, but I know there is a 50/50 chance of me hating or loving The Cruel Prince and I’m SO ANXIOUS TO READ IT.

A Line in the Dark was sent to me by the wonderful Alexis @ Lacy Literacy, on her search to find ownvoices readers! (I’m a queer Asian but not a Chinese lesbian like the MC is.)

favorite book?

The King’s Men for sure!! While none of the AFTG books got five stars (you can stan the books all you want but you CAN’T tell me that the plot wasn’t messy, the conclusion wasn’t messy, and the writing wasn’t at least a LITTLE messy). They’re not the Highest Quality of books but also. I adore the characters. I love them so much. You do not know how far my obsession has gone.

disappointment?

It pains me to say this, but City of Ghosts. I’m really surprised that the plot was as underdeveloped as it was? But. Here we are. The more I think about it the more ANGRY and SALTY I get over it.

mmm blogging

updates?

  • Well, I was on hiatus for the whole month basically?
  • I published one post total in July. But I still got a lot of views (surprisingly) and still got a lot of new followers (also surprisingly) and I’m surprised (surprisingly). BUT THANK YOU, Y’ALL ARE THE BEST!
  • I also TRIED to get caught up with comments before August started so that I could finally start fresh and get back on my blogging game but I didn’t… QUITE make it. As in I replied to no comments.
  • And if you haven’t heard me talking about it yet!!! I made a bookstagram account!!! I’m very excited about it!!!! Follow me @foreverandeverly_ if you want!!!!!
  • (I’m still salty that @foreverandeverly was taken by an account that’s literally just photos of a toddler named Everly.)

mmm writing

  • I did not write a single thing until July 27, when I started writing this post and saw that I had a goal to write one (1) poem, and then wrote a poem.
  • That’s it.
  • OH WAIT OH WAIT oh my god I can’t believe I forgot about this I guess I’ve been so used to not having anything to share in this section I hate myself
  • I actually thought of a new WIP idea!!
  • (You can obviously tell how much I’ve been working on it by the fact that I almost forgot about it.)
  • But I’m REALLY excited about it and I feel like this has the potential to actually Go Somewhere?? And I know I say this about all my WIPs but I have a really strong feeling. And I love the concept and don’t want to see it go.
  • Not going to reveal much yet, since there’s not much to reveal anyways, but basically: A water spirit assassin catches the wrong twin. :))
  • (Oh and it’s definitely Sapphic.)

mmm life

  • The obvious life moment here is: I went on vacation!!!
  • I went to Japan and Thailand and it was really hot but REALLY fun! My next post is going to be a full post on my trip with lots of photos and commentary you didn’t want, so look out for that!!
  • Though I will be describing my trip in much more (unnecessary) detail, I think it’s notable to note* that I watched some good movies on vacation/on the flights: Spiderman: Homecoming (x2), Thor: Ragnorak, Black Panther (rewatch), LOVE!!!! SIMON!!!!! FOR THE!!!! FOURTH TIME!!!!, Ant Man 1, Ant Man and the Wasp, and Coco.
  • I also had dance from 9 to 4 for three days, right after I flew back from Thailand. Surprisingly, I did not have jet lag… at all?? (I slept like one full hour in a span of 28 hours of traveling + waiting, and it was night when I got back home, so I just Crashed.)
  • Unfortunately, I got a LOT of pain and soreness from dance, and a bunch of bruises. It was the most pain I’d been in from dance… ever. Like I had to put my hands on the wall to push up from the toilet because my legs just could not do it themselves because it hURT.
  • And then!!! I got contact dermatitis!!! Aka a big, swollen, itchy rash developed on my face (left chin area, then left cheek, then right cheek), as well as other rash “spots” all over my legs and arms. I still have it, but it’s doing much better after steroid drugs and cream!!
  • It was also my sister’s birthday! She had a roller skating birthday party and it was fun. I also still have yet to buy her gifts. *peace sign*
  • Aaaaand like I said at the beginning of this post, yesterday I found out that after over 5 years of being cancer-free, my mom’s cancer has returned. (This news came immediately after I’d learned I’d be getting books that I’d been wanting really really bad, so you can imagine how it was to go from the highest high to the lowest low.)
  • So yeah. This is kind of personal and I don’t want to speak much about it because it upsets me and it’s unlikely this will end up being fatal but. I’m really worried.

*I can’t believe I just said this.

mmm old goals

I don’t remember a time when I only failed TWO goals and honestly? I’m proud of me

  • read at least 7 books (*cries in I read 10 books*)
  • write & upload at least 1 review (I actually… did it!!)
  • read ARCs (I read four!! I love being productive!!!)
  • write 1 poem (I did it. it was bad, but I did it.)
  • TAKE A BREAK (can I just… take another break… from everything… forever)
  • if I have internet connection, try to comment on some posts? (ha. funny. I had internet connection pretty much the whole time and didn’t do this at all.)
  • drink 1 water bottle each day (not reeeeeeally)
  • stretch! (not EXACTLY but also I had flexibility competitions with my 8yo cousin so it counts
  • have fun and relax!!! (I DID!! MOSTLY!!!!)

mmm new goals

  • read 8 books (well… I have a lot of ARCs to read and some other books planned so. here goes nothing)
  • read at least 5 ARCs (I have eARCs to read and physical ARCs to read and their release dates are sneaking up on me and I have to read them and,,,)
  • write & upload at least 5 reviews (reading ARCs means reviewing ARCs!!!)
  • slowly… develop my WIP? (I don’t think I’ll write it till NaNoWriMo because I know how much I procrastinate)
  • post at least 7 times (CAN I DO IT??)
  • INTERACT!! (meaning: ACTUALLY comment on posts, and ACTUALLY reply to comments)
  • not fail at managing bookstagram?? (I’m excited but also nervous. a lil)
  • not stress about school (I’m not saying I’m stressed but. I’m stressed)
  • not stress about my mom (this might actually work because of school stress)
  • sleep at least 8 hours during the school week (setting myself up for failure is so much fun)

mmm looking ahead

SCHOOL STARTS. It starts so early (August 8 next week) and I know, I KNOW, that as soon as I get back, I’ll get stressed again and I’ll fall back into the depression period I’ve been mostly-successfully fighting all summer. I really want to be positive but it’s so hard. I truly, truly do not want to go back to school.

But it’ll also distract me from things with my mom so that’s nice.

Yeah that’s it. School is pretty much all I have.

shall we chat

how was july? heading back to school yet? (or getting out of school??) what good books have you read? do you have a bookstagram account?? what are your favorite marvel movies? and HAVE YOU EVER GOTTEN RASHES???

    1. Thank you so much!! I’m honestly super surprised that I accomplished all the goals and read all the books that I did but… it’s great that I did it 😂

And thank you! I definitely love the beginning stages of coming up with a WIP you’re super excited about (although that excitement considerably disappears after a bit, unfortunately 😭). Good luck with school, I’m sure you can do it!! <3

  5. Hey there, May. Very sorry to hear about your mother, and know that kind thoughts and words are headed your way : )
On the other hand, yay vacation (!!) and congratulations on new books and /ten/ read books (like, you beat me by a mile- 10?)! I’ve been rereading Percy Jackson too and find I still love all the characters that I did a few years ago, and that I don’t really remember the plots of the books! : )
All the best, and best wishes to your mother,

Ahaha I'm not quite sure how I managed to read that many books but I feel pretty proud! And oh yes, I LOVE rereading the PJO books because I always get so happy to be transported back to the same worlds I loved as a child 😍

  6. *hug* I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. My uncle has cancer, it’s not gone yet but at the moment he and my aunt have to wait a few months until another test can be done. It’s so so stressful for them. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers <3.

Good luck going back to school! Out of the books you read this month, I've only read Nimona, which I loved. I'm going to put Our Stories, Our Voices on my wishlist (the Dutch website I order stuff from, says it will be released in September), since it sounds so good :).

I hardly ever leave comments on most blogs I read, but I do read your blog :).

Oh, I’m so glad you loved Nimona! It’s such an underrated graphic novel?? And I hope you love Our Stories, Our Voices if you get around to reading it, it’s truly an amazing anthology in my opinion!

Aaahh thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment, then!! <3

  7. WOW You had quite a month. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. ❤
I’m really happy you decided to join Bookstagram. Sorry that foreverandeverly was taken. I wonder if the toddler knows she has an Instagram? (I have a whole rant about this but I’ll spare you.)

    1. Aaahh, thank you so much, Emily! Your words mean a lot to me <3 And aahh thank you! (I just remembered the comment I saw from you, excuse me while I go reply 😅) And I have no idea? I find it lowkey that a mom has an Instagram account dedicated to her toddler 😬
