2019 Goals Mid-Year Check-In: Am I Failing Miserably or Have I Managed to Surprise Myself?

Hi, I’m May, and I have horrible memory.

I’m going to pretend as if I haven’t already written this entire post and am just now writing this intro, and say: I have no recollection of what my 2019 goals were, except for like two of them.

So today, I’m revisiting these goals I made half a year ago and seeing how well I’m doing on them, and because I have the worst memory and have completely forgotten them all, I have no idea what to expect!!!

[insert me giving a thumbs-up]

(Also this is probably the worst intro I’ve ever written, considering 1) it’s all fake, and 2) it’s in a very different voice from the rest of the post because I’m writing this at midnight and I’m tired, but this is the content you signed up for when you followed my blog!!)

  • Read 100 books. I’m at 44 books right now, and I’m not quite on track for 100 books—Goodreads says I’m 8 books behind, which is just GREAT. But I always manage to get to 100 by the end of the year, because I’m smart and just cram in all my reading in December!!!

  • Actually start writing reviews again! Haha NO. I’ve only written one non-ARC review this year and that was because I wanted to talk about the issues in the book that I didn’t see a lot of other people talking about. But I still do want to get back into the habit of writing reviews for most of the books I read!!
  • Be more organized with ARCs. The only reason I set this goal was because I was horrible with eARCs, and I’ve stopped requesting eARCs because I have a really hard time reading them, so now it’s Completely Irrelevant. Thank you, Completely Useless May Who Can’t Read eARCs!!!!
  • Read more webcomics! YES!!! I’ve fallen more and more in love with webcomics, and I’m so happy I’ve found some amazing ones this year. They just bring me so much happiness (the art! the characters! the stories!) and I might actually make a recommendations post soon if that interests anyone?

fae divider (2)

  • Continue working on my WIP! Yes, and I re-plotted it and have started writing it again! I’ve written 9.7k, and I think I’ll get to 10k, but I don’t think I’m going to continue after I edit it and submit it to a writing contest, because of the next thing:
  • Come up with other book ideas. My brain was so nice and instead of coming up with an idea during the months I had no inspiration, it decided to come up with an idea while I was actually working on something!! But I’m… really excited about this project (as I always am with new ideas) and I think I might write it for NaNoWriMo this year!
  • Write more poetry! Yikes, I haven’t written poetry in forever. I’ve done it sparingly these last few months (the most recent being for one of my finals in May), but definitely not as much as I wanted to.
snippet from the poem I wrote for my English final!!
  • Write 5K in one day. I haven’t actually written in so long and imagining 5K in a day right now is so stressful, but I’ll hopefully be able to do it later in the year?

fae divider (2)

  • Reach… 2,000 followers?! My follower count was growing Very Slowly in the beginning of the year (I mean, understandable, I was like nonexistent), but now that I’m getting active again, it’s increasing a lot faster than I expected and I definitely think I’ll be able to reach 2K, which is just so WILD TO ME!!!!
  • Actually interact. AAHHH IMAGINE ME CRYING BECAUSE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I’M DOING!!! I’m so so proud that I’m actually doing this now and I have no plans of stopping!! I’ve missed commenting and all that jazz so much, and doing it again brings me so much happiness.
  • Implement a cool feature or something. “Feature” not quite the right word to use, but I meant some kind of like project—and I did exactly that by hosting the 2019 Book Blogger Awards! 10 days left to nominate your favorite bloggers so GET ON IT.

  • Just. be good to myself. I still feel so so horrible about my lack of interaction, but it’s starting to go away now and I think by the end of the year I’ll be feeling a lot better. Thank you all so much for your support, you make this process so much easier <33

  • Practice self-care. Self-care to me means not procrastinating, practicing hygiene, and in general doing things to ensure that my health doesn’t worsen, and to be very honest, I haven’t been doing that!
  • Listen to more music and watch more shows! I’ve been exploring more indie songs and artists this year, and I’ve also watched a few shows that I’ve been meaning to for a long time (One Day at a Time, Queer Eye, The Good Place, Stranger Things, and The Umbrella Academy)!

Image result for the good place  Image result for queer eye show banner

  • Do more dance stuff! I don’t talk about dance much except in my monthly recaps, but I have been doing more dance stuff! I decided to do a solo this year (which is simultaneously terrifying and exciting), and I also signed up for my first non-obligatory hip hop class, and actually went “full out” instead of holding back. (I’ve never truly gone full out until now because I was insecure/anxious about the reactions to me suddenly not being shy, but I WENT FOR IT and everyone’s surprised but really supportive and AAAHH.)
  • Prioritize my happiness. This is still something I’m learning to do, and it’s hard because sometimes doing one thing might make me happy in the moment but I know I’ll regret it later. But I’m trying!

reading: 2/4 accomplished!

writing: 2/4 accomplished!

blogging: 2/4 accomplished!

life: 2/4 accomplished!

total: 8/16 accomplished!

8/16 is half my goals completed, and that’s a good sign of me being able to accomplish the rest of them for the last half of the year!! I’m actually shocked by how many I’ve already achieved, considering the fact that I pretty much remembered only two of the goals I set, but I’ll take it!!!

shall we chat

how are you doing on your 2019 goals, if you made any? are you on track with your Goodreads challenge? what TV shows have you watched and do you recommend any??

p.s. my blog now has a sidebar!!! thoughts? (I don’t hate it but I’m not particularly attached to it either lmao, I only made it for navigation purposes)

    1. OH MY GOD JACKIE I CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN HOW HAPPY I WAS TO SEE YOU IN MY NOTIFICATIONS FAHDLKFHASLFS I LOVE YOU!!!! and yes I’ll definitely write up a webcomic recs post!!!! they’re literally the only things I can actually read nowadays and it’s HORRIBLE

    1. Aahhh 20 is a great number of books read!! 44 is actually not as good as I’d like it to be (for me personally — I know so many of my friends who’ve read almost 100 books by now fhahdhfds). And yes, I’m doing NaNo! How about you? (And thank you so much ☺💕)

      1. Thanks 😭 Exactly?? I have no idea how people can read so faaaast.
I’m thinking about doing it, but a bit conflicted because last year I only got to 1.3k words last year – it would probs be super stressful to try to get myself to meet the word goal, lol. Np! 🙂

  2. May!! Congrats on completing half of your goals!! I guess, now that I think about it, I’ve completed almost half of everything I wanted to do? So maybe that’s a good thing, but I’m pretty sure I’m a little behind. Oh well.

And yay for working on your WIP! You can do it!! I’ve been writing my WIP lately and it is a whole Mess and a half, so I understand, but 5k words in one day is a good goal to go for! I believe in you!!

    1. Aw, thank you so much Xandra!! I’m so glad you’ve also managed to complete half of everything you wanted to do this year — and even if you’re a little behind, it’s still a great achievement! 💕

And thank you so much! I’m wishing you ALL the luck on your WIP; I’m sure it’s not even half as bad as you think it is 💖 I hope you have an amazing rest of your year!!

  3. … 100 books?!?! Maaaaannnn … and here I thought 52 books was good! Good on you, love! If I hit 52 this year, I want to up it to 60 next year.

I love that snippet! I plan to write more poetry this year as well. I used to write a lot of poetry but then stopped for a LONG time.

2K?!? That’s amazing!! I’m sure you’ll get there! I’m FAIRLY close to 1K? But I think it’s a little less since I think part of the counts come from my Twitter account.

Self-care has been a BIG thing for me this year. Cleaning more, nightly face routines and skincare, more yoga this year, watching what foods upset my stomach (which is a lot)… I’m hoping to just get better in this year in general 🙂

I think you’re doing great with your goals! And the great thing? you can always move them to the next year 😉

    1. Ah no, 52 books is such a good number! Reading goals are soo subjective — I know some people who are aiming for 200 and it astounds me. But I’m cheering you on for 52 this year!! ❤

Aahh thank you so much! I also used to write a lot more poetry, but I haven't been doing a lot of it in so long and it makes me sad! And aww, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I hope you get to 1k soon, you deserve it 💕

And I'm so happy to hear you've been prioritizing self-care this year as well! It's so important and we all need to take a moment and make sure we're practicing it. Thank you so much! I hope you have a lovely rest of your year ☺💗

      1. Gosh yes … 200??? I wish I had the ability to do that but there’s simply NO time for me ha-ha!

I’m hoping I’ll be inspired poetry wise soon 🙂 And thank you! ❤

Ah yes … I think I watched an instagrammer post a story which made me realize I REALLY need to start focusing on that. Here's to us both!

  4. Honestly, I don’t set goal. My philosophy is: set the bar as low as it will go and you can’t be disappointed. As far as the first half of the year, I was basically in the hospital but, hey, I am 23 books ahead of my 100 book challange. Yay.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha, that’s a great philosophy! I think I just have fun setting goals, and I honestly don’t think I really keep track of them (horrible memory) except for two of them. But wow, it’s impressive that you’re 23 books ahead of schedule, especially when you were in the hospital!

  5. You have a lot of goals! I think I’d be in meltdown if I had that many …. For the first time in many years I am ahead on my Goodreads challenge (but my target is only half yours – a cunning plan by me to make sure I hit the goal). I’ve notched down on the e-ARCs too because like you I wasn’t getting around to reading them….

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ahaha, well it helps when you remember literally only two of your goals!! And I just have a little too much fun setting goals (and then forgetting them) 😅 And yay, I’m glad you’re ahead on your Goodreads challenge! I can’t even remember the last time I was ahead 😭 I hope you have a wonderful rest of your year, lovely!!! 💗

  6. YES to a webcomic recommendations post! I don’t read webcomics usually, but they seem so cool and I feel like I SHOULD but where to start, May I need your amazing guidance here. 😀
You did so good on your goals so far, I’m so happy and proud of you!! And yes for writing a little bit and you’re doing amazing, take care of yourself, you’re the best. Sending you tons of love ❤ ❤ ❤

  7. You’re doing so great, May!!!!!!! I was about 8 books behind for my yearly goal when I started July but I’ve read A LOT this month and now I’m only 6 behind, whoop, whoop.
and yes, keep yelling at me to write my blogger nominations because this post is not going to write itself 🙃

  8. That is amazing! Half the year is gone and you’ve accomplished half of your goals already. That is seriously amazing work (I know I said amazing twice. Probably why I’m not an author or anything awesome like that). Also congratulations for hosing the blogger awards! That sounds like a huge feat to accomplish this year, so good on you for taking the helm of that!

    1. Aahh, thank you so much, Leelyn! I honestly wasn’t expecting to accomplish half of what I wanted to, but I guess I’m on track haha! And thank you so much!! It’s been a lot of work to organize the awards, but definitely worth it to see all this blogger love spread ☺💗

  9. Whoah 8/16 is not bad at all! Best of luck with review writing, I get behind all the time 😅 and it’s exciting that you’re almost on track to reading 100 books, good luck!!! 💪

  10. You’re doing amazing with your goals to far! I really loved reading this post.💓

I would love to read a webcomics recommendations post! I’ve never read one and don’t entirely know what they are (besides making the educated guess that they are comics on the web) but I’d love to learn more because I see you and other blogs talking about ones they loved a lot. ☺️

YOUR POETRY SNIPPET, WHAT, THAT WAS AMAZING I LOVED IT SO MUCH. Also, congrats on your new idea eeek, and on all your blogging interaction! I’m super happy that you love it and it’s making you happy!

I’ve been watching Queer Eye and I love it so much. Netflix originals have been surprisingly really good lately and ahh, the Fab 5 are amazing and I literally cry every time the person of the episode comes and sees their home and then they feel good about themselves and confident and I just?? It makes me emotional.

Yay yay yay for all the dance stuff! That’s so amazing about your solo and GOING FULL OUT IN HIP HOP, YES. (I relate, I just started hip hop this last dance season and it was a journey but honestly I loved it and me being on the more ballet/lyrical side, I loved trying something completely different.)

I’m cheering you on for the second half of the year!! You got this.🙌🏼

    1. Aw, thank you so much!! I’m so happy you enjoyed the post 😭💗

And aahh yay, other people seem interested in a webcomic recs post so I definitely will have to do one now!! And OMG SHHHHH the poetry snippet was barely anything 🙈 But thank you so much, you are genuinely too sweet!!!

Oh my god, I love Queer Eye so so much? I can’t wait to watch the newest season when it comes out in a few days, it’s seriously an amazing show! It’s brought me so much happiness but also makes me so emotional too 😭

Aahh, THANK YOU!! I’m so happy you started hip hop as well and enjoyed it — I wouldn’t say I’m a ballet person like you, but I’m definitely more on the contemporary/lyrical side and hip hop is a whole other world for me as well. (But it’s SO much fun!)

Thank you so much!!! I hope you have the best last half of your year 💗

  11. omg you’re doing so well on your goals i cri. i don’t even remember even three goals i set for the year, and i’m lowkey considering doing a mid-year check-in to see how much i fail and to cry about it lmao. as for my goodreads goal, i’m super on track with that and i’m insanely happy! my original goal is 100, but by the mid-way point i read 75. i might increase it to 120 to 150 but since the second half of the year will be busy for me, i don’t think that’s very possible (bc i lowkey burned myself out in june). also 44 is great you’re doing amazing sweetie!! i need to watch one day at a time, bc i’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it. i hope you loved it! also, i’m in love with your poem 💘💘 (sorry for this longass comment)

    1. Aahh TAASIA!! Thank you 😭 And lmao, that’s literally me, but I’m sure you accomplished a lot more than you think you did! That’s 100% what happened to me despite forgetting all my goals. And yay, I’m so happy you’re ahead on your reading challenge! I haven’t been anything but behind for a very long time, but oh well 😎 And yes, please watch One Day at a Time!! And it’s the perfect time to watch it now that there’s another season on its way sometime in the future 😍

  12. Aahh you’re doing amazingly!!! And yes, a webcomic recommendations post is definitely something I’d love. I’m so proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone in your hip hop class, and it sounds like so much fun!!! And yay!!! You’re half done!!! That’s amazing, well deserved May. xx

  13. Wow you’ve done so well with your goals – especially as you have so many!! You should definitely be proud of the work you’ve done this year, May!
YES PLEASE to a webcomics recommendations post! I have seen them mentioned so much this year (especially as I just finished reading Eliza and Her Monsters) so I want to try some! I have absolutely no idea how they work though haha, where do you even read them from??
I didn’t set a GoodReads goal but if I did I would have been VERY behind due to a slump I’ve had since forever (that doesn’t even feel like an exaggeration). I seem to be out of it now though, having read 4 books already in July so hopefully this continues! Not having exams or school is definitely helping though – I’m so happy to have time to myself and to not feel guilty for not studying??
YOUR POETRY SNIPPET WAS SO GOOD WTH. I wish I could write poetry but nope haha. I’m always the same though with writing, I’m either a Sahara desert with no ideas whatsoever or I have so many ideas all at once (what would be the opposite of the desert? Rainforest? lol).
    Loved reading this post May!!💓

    1. Aw, Emme, thank you so much!!! You are too kind to me 😭💕

Ah with the amount of people who’ve expressed interest in a webcomic recommendations post, I think I’m definitely going to write one up! (As for where to find some, Webtoons has a lot of great ones 😉)

Oh no, I’m sorry to hear you were slumping! I’m glad you’re getting out of it though; I’ve started slumping and it’s really terrible and I hate it 😭 But yes, I definitely agree! Being out of school offers so much freedom!!

Omg THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I think my writing is pretty much doing nothing for months, getting briefly excited to write, and then abandoning the project I’m working on for another 😅 I’m so happy you enjoyed reading this post though!! ❤

  14. Congratulations on half your blogging goals! That’s amazing. Here’s hoping that the rest of the year is kind and you get through them all.

    I’m rooting for you!

  15. I also have a terrible memory, and your intro made me laugh with its relatability. Look at you being 50% overall on your goals, I think you are doing great and I love that you have be kind to yourself as a goal. Self care and self love are so important, and it is so easy for us to beat ourselves up when it comes to blogging. You are doing great. And if you don’t feel like writing reviews, that’s okay too!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. If I elicited a laugh from you, then my job here is done 😎 But ahh thank you so much!! I definitely think taking care of myself is really important (though I truly suck at it most of the time), and self-care is something so many people need to prioritize! And hfdshfsd thank you, you’re too kind 😭💖 I hope you have an amazing rest of your 2019!!

  16. AHHHHH, YOU FINISHED HALF OF YOUR GOALS. YAYYYYYY! *humbly asks the Mango Queen to accept the Cat Lady’s mangos which DO NOT have cat hair on them* Yes, yes, I am very much interested in web comics [despite having not actually read any]. One of my goals is to interact with more bloggers. Like you. And also am I remembering right that your favorite color is pink? ‘Cause I LOVE pink. Especially pale pink. But hot pink is good, too. *gets distracted by thinking of how much more aesthetic pink things are*.
Quick question: would you mind chcking out my blogs? I’m not trying to be pushy, just wanting some more readers, and wanting to know your opinions. If you don’t want to you don’t have to. I won’t be upset.

  17. Please write a webcomic post, I want to read ALL OF THEM.

And yay for finishing up half your goals! I loved that snippet of your poem, btw. Made me feel things, and uh, more snippets of your writing please.

  18. Yayay half is still pretty good!! My goal for this year was 75 books, it’s gone up from last year’s 50 (who am I kidding my initial goal was 100 but that soon became unattainable), it’s proving a challenge but omg haha totally relate I always do all my reading catchup in December. What else is that month for anyway? I’m currently 13 books behind though whoops. And same though I am so bad with eARCs? My new rule is to avoid requesting unless I can get a physical copy… Seems like a bit of a pointless thing but I mean I get credit on NetGalley and I get to read the book in my preferred format? I also submitted something for a writing contest that I worked really hard on, the limit was 3k and on the night it was due I finally got it done and edited to just under 3k so I was just very happy! Oh man as for TV Shows I am an addict but I have a strange taste so my faves are How To Get Away With Murder, Homeland, The Blacklist, Prison Break, and Suits 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ahh, thank you, Cas!! And 75 books is a great goal! And oh god, doing all the catch up reading in December really isn’t the best strategy but I’m glad I’m not the only one who does it 😎 But I hope you can catch up soon!! I’d honestly be so much more behind if webcomcis didn’t exist lmao.

And yes! It makes me so sad, because you have a lot more opportunities with eARCs, and I’m so very privileged to still be able to read ARCs, but I really hope I can grow out of these weird can’t-read-eARCs funk. And aahhh SO MANY CONGRATS on submitting to a writing contest!!! That’s amazing and you should be so proud of yourself 💗

  19. Awesome post, May!!! Accomplishing half your goals already is a HUGE success! That’s amazing! I haven’t read ANY webcomics before, but I want to so badly! I have a feeling I would really like that them, but I just haven’t gotten around to reading them. (My logic is flawless) I honestly need to get into a better habit of writing some reviews again as well, and CAN WE PLEASE HAVE MORE SNIPPETS OF YOUR WRITING!? That little piece of poetry was so sweet! I loved it! Also, congrats on going full out in that hip hop class! I used to be the same when I did dance, but I finally threw all caution out to the wind, and felt so much more comfortable with my dancing after that. Haha!

I hope you’re having an awesome July so far! ❤

    1. THANK YOU SO MUCH, KELLY!! And I love webcomics so much and I hope you get around to some soon! They’re just so much fun to read 😍 Oh my god STOP BEING SO SWEET, I’m going to cry!! I’m so happy you liked my little poetry snippet 😭💖

And aahhh, I had no idea you used to dance! It makes me so excited to meet other dancers ❤ I'm glad you were able to go more full out and became more comfortable with dancing! I'm still not Completely there yet, but I'm working on it ☺

  20. the good place is the answer to all my worries and i can’t wait to watch s3 when it’s finally available on netflix in august 👏

my og gr goal was literally 40 books b/c wow I’m REALLY unambitious wtf BUT i’ve upped it to 80 books as i’ve already read 65 this year. i’m secretly hoping to touch 100 but we’ll see shhh

    1. OH I HAD NO IDEA S3 WAS COMING TO NETFLIX IN AUGUST!!! You just made my night omg (I was able to watch the last 4 eps so I’ve kind of already spoiled myself, but STILL)

And aahh you can Totally go for 100 if you’re at 65 right now!! I mean, I’m aiming for 100 and I’ve read like 20 books less than you 😅😭
