Goodbye 2019: Checking My Goals for 2019 and Making New 2020 Resolutions!

Hi, and welcome to the new year!!!

It feels surreal to be saying 2020 (I’m usually good about switching years when I write the date, but this one will be next to impossible to remember), but it almost feels hopeful? Maybe that’s just me being wistful.

I’m very excited to be back and talking about my goals, both old and new! I reached 10/16 of my 2019 goals, and while not the Best I could have done, I think it’s still pretty good, considering I had almost no motivation to do anything in 2019!

Note: I am so so sorry to have abandoned my blog yet again in December, but I truly needed it. (It was my worst month of the year.) I’m so excited to be blogging again, but to post everything I want to this month, I’ve decided not to post a December monthly wrap-up! Missed you all so so much, and thanks for still supporting me even when I’ve disappeared. <33

2019 GOALS

berry 2 READING berry 1

  • Read 100 books. I had to cram in 7 books in 2 days in November, and then 5 books yesterday, but I DID IT!!! Never again letting myself fall so far behind, because that was the worst.

  • Actually start writing reviews again! Yeah, definitely failed this one. I pretty much only reviewed books that were ARCs, and while I convinced myself it was a time thing, it was also just a laziness/lack of motivation thing.
    .
  • Be more organized with ARCs. Apparently, by organized I meant “read and review ARCs on time”, which I did! Mostly!! (Haven’t posted my Girls of Storm and Shadow review yet, but I didn’t want to post it early and have it affect sales since it’s, uh, negative.)
    .
  • Read more webcomics! I’ve read so many new webcomics and I’m so happy I did!! I really can’t believe I read Lore Olympus, Heir’s Game, and Castle Swimmer all in 2019, because I feel like I’ve loved them FOREVER.

berry 2 WRITING berry 1

  • Continue working on my WIP! I did! The WIP in question was the one I wrote a few chapters of and submitted to a writing contest (and won!), so that’s neat!!
    .
  • Come up with other book ideas. I came up with a new project that I wrote 10k of for NaNoWriMo, but it was terribly plotted (as in, not plotted at all). But maybe when I feel like plotting, I’ll return to it?
a golden snippet I just discovered
  • Write more poetry! It’s not really a LOT more poetry, but I did write a few poems now and then! And I also wrote more (very sad) poems in December, and they were in a different format than I usually do so that’s cool!
    .
  • Write 5K in one day. Yeah, I don’t think I’m going to reach this goal ever. I wrote 3k in one day during NaNoWriMo, which was a big feat for me, but even that took a lot of brainpower.

berry 2 BLOGGING berry 1

  • Reach… 2,000 followers?!  I did!! I’m not big on followers and all that, but 2k is such a big number to me and I’m so grateful for all of you for sticking around with me as I’ve struggled, and thankful that more people want to read what I have to write!
    .
  • Actually interact.  You guys know I struggle a lot with this, and I struggle a lot with being okay with that fact, so I’m not going to make some big rant about it. But I’m just… so very sorry. (I’m looking at my mid-year goals check-in and apparently I WAS doing this… but then I stopped.)
    .
  • Implement a cool feature or something. I hosted the 2019 Book Blogger Awards, and I loved it so much! While there were some bumps in the road, it overall felt amazing to boost and uplift so many bloggers

  • Just. be good to myself. Yeah, again. I’m really really terrible at not beating myself up over how bad I’ve been at blogging. So this was a complete fail!

berry 2 LIFE berry 1

  • Practice self-care. To be honest, I got worse at self-care in 2019!! I slept even less, practiced hygiene even less, and drank even less water.
    .
  • Listen to more music and watch more shows! I think the only thing I want to say for this is: Miraculous Ladybug.

Image result for miraculous ladybug

  • Do more dance stuff! I’m performing a solo in my spring show later this year, which is TERRIFYING to me but also very exciting!! And over the summer, I branched out of my comfort zone and signed up for a hip hop class!
    .
  • Prioritize my happiness. I’m really not sure what I meant by this vague goal, but I don’t think I accomplished it. The whole year felt like a haze to me, and I never got out of that cycle of feeling and doing nothing, because it was so hard to. So no, I didn’t prioritize my happiness.

NEW 2020 GOALS

berry 2 READING berry 1

  • Read 100 books. Same goal as always! 100 is always a good number for me, because it’s not so outrageous that I know I’ll never achieve it, but it’s also not too easy for me (or so I’ve thought and been proven wrong).

  • Actually start writing reviews again! A goal stolen from last year, because it’s relevant again! I want to make review-writing a regular thing again, because it’s something I truly enjoy. I’m really excited to (hopefully) get back to it!
    .
  • Keep better track of my reads. I’ve been really bad at keeping up with my reading spreadsheet, because I was so focused on reading rather than tracking different stats about what I read. And it’s terrible because now I have 30 books to put into my spreadsheet!!
    .
  • Reread whatever I want. In 2019 I tried to hold myself back on rereads, and honestly, why? Rereading is one of my favorite parts about reading in general!! I’ve worried so much about missing out on other books because of rereading, but at this point, rereading is bringing me more joy than new books, so why not!!!

berry 2 WRITING berry 1

  • Finish a WIP. I’m feeling so unmotivated about the two projects I have right now (especially since one is… completely un-plotted), but god I just want to finish writing a whole draft of just one WIP!!
    .
  • Write more poetry. I sorely miss writing poems!! I think poetry allows me to be more artistic than regular prose writing, and it’s also so cathartic. Specifically, I want to write at least 5 poems a month, which should be really easy, if only I make the time for it!
one of the less sad parts from a recent poem (yes I know it’s a weird style!!)
  • Write 50K words. I think to be more successful at writing, I need to set an actual word count goal for the entire year! This is the first time I’m trying this out, so I have no idea if this is a good goal for me or not, but we’ll see.

berry 2 BLOGGING berry 1

  • Reach 2,400 followers. I never really obsess over follower counts or stats, so this is honestly more of an estimation of what I think I’ll be at at the end of the year! (My brain wants it to be 2,500 for a nice round number, but I honestly don’t think that will happen.)
    .
  • Actually interact. Yeah, I’m setting this goal again, because I absolutely FAILED at it in 2019. I’ve been so bad at this for so long that I’m afraid I’ve lost my touch with it forever, but this is honestly truly my biggest blogging goal for the year.
    .
  • Host the 2020 Book Blogger Awards! I am very excited to do this again, and I’ve already started planning/thinking about what to do this year!! I sincerely hope certain events from last year don’t repeat, and I also hope that the changes I’m implementing will be for the better.
    .
  • Just. be good to myself. Stealing yet another goal! The self-loathing in relation to blogging has gotten worse with my blogging breaks in both November and December. 2020 is going to be the year that changes!! Please!!!

berry 2 LIFE berry 1

  • Practice self-care. Again, I fail at this VERY badly, which is all the more reason to include it as a goal. Hygiene, sleep, water, and just relaxation in general is very hard for me, and I just want to get better at all of it okay!!
    .
  • Listen to and play more music! I have a habit of only listening to one artist every few months, and I want to change that. Also, since I’ve dropped art and joined band this year, I’ve been really enjoying playing music even more (especially since I’m learning drums versus my usual piano)!
Image result for wallows
Wallows, aka my current wh”artist of the month”
  • Get a job! I really want to earn my own money and have a source of income, even it’s minimum wage, because not only is it a good life skill, it also looks good on college resumes and I want that cash!! (I am HONEST on this blog.)
    .
  • Prep for college. I really wish I could put a goal like “stress less about grades!”, but realistically 1) I’ve been putting pressure on myself for getting the Highest grades for so long that I can’t stop, and 2) I need to start prepping for college/university (whatever you call it)!!

shall we chat

how did you do on your 2019 goals? do you have any for 2020? tell me one of them! have any music artist recommendations for me? I hope your new year was off to a great start!!

  1. Happy new year, May, I hope you have the happiest year ever, full of great reads! The only goal I fulfilled was to read 50 books because I am useless 🙃 I am gonna try and redo most of my goals of 2019 and actually do some of them in 2020!

  2. It’s good to have you back May! I totally failed my Goodreads goal because I gave up on reading halfway through the year but your cramming is impressive! Good luck with completing all your goals!

  3. You did not so bad on the 2019 goals! Although you skipped the most important ones- the ones who prioritize yourself and hapiness over anything else.
Remember you can’t pour from an empty cup, so take care of yourself, Love! ❤️❤️ Don’t beat yourself up too much for needing a break or not accomplishing as much as you wanted blogging/writting wise.

Goodluck with your 2029’s goals, and for getting a job!! Xx

  4. Welcome back, darlin’! YOU READ 100 BOOKS?!?! Ugh … my goals ha-ha! I lowered my RG to 40, with the hopes I will read more. I have SO much going on this year (all good things), so I don’t want to feel TOO much pressure … and 50 books last year was still higher than normal pressure for me ha-ha!

I actually want to get back into writing poetry this year. I used to write poetry all the time, but then I stopped for some reason … so might give it a go.

Oooo yay! Thank you again for hosting the event! it’s super fun to nominate people and give all the shout outs!

Side Note: I’m sorry December was so rough for you! *hugs* I hope things get better for you!

    1. Thank you Jenna!! ❤ And ahh no, 40 books is a great amount!! And 50 is a great goal, especially if your life is going to busy. Don't push yourself to far 💗 (100 was definitely pushing myself this year 😭)

Same! I wrote a LOT of it circa 2016 – 2017, even a bit in 2018, but then I stopped and I really miss it 😦 And yes it's my pleasure!! I'm super excited to host the awards again ☺

(Thank you so much, Jenna. Your constant kind words are deeply appreciated 😭💖)

  5. You completed so many goals! I’m sorry that December was such a hard month for you and I’m hoping that 2020 is a better year for you. It’s okay to fall down, so don’t be so hard on yourself when that happens again. Yas, girl, get that paper and apply for jobs! I didn’t start working a job until I graduated from high school, but find jobs that will sharpen you and push you out of your comfort zone. Those jobs (even if I hated them and quit as soon as possible) helped me learn valuable life lessons and grow me as a person. Happy New Year!

    1. Thank you so much Sarah!! I really really appreciate your kind words 💗💗 And thank you a lot for your advice! I think a job will really push me out of my comfort zone, especially as someone on the shier, more nervous side when it comes to talking to people (which most teen jobs involve unfortunately lmao). I hope you have a wonderful 2020, Sarah!! ❤

  6. Happy new year, May! I’m sorry that December wasn’t a good month, and I hope that this year keeps getting better and better for you.💗Also, you should be proud of the goals that you accomplished, because you did amazing!! (I’m extremely impressed that you read 5 books in one day, lol.)

Ha, I relate so much to “listens to one artist per month.” I’m also the kind of person that if I love a song, I will listen to it and only it on repeat until I…don’t love it anymore? I need to break that habit. XD One of my goals is to make a monthly playlist each month, so I’m hoping that will keep me accountable for finding new music.

Prep for college!! Wow, I also really need to do that, which is completely terrifying. According to what I’ve heard, this next semester for me is going to be the hardest of high school yet, so…yay. We’re all in this together??

    Good luck with everything!!

    1. Happy new year to you too, Olivia!! Thank you so much ❤ (And shhh 4 of them were (web)comics and the 1 prose book was one I'd half-finished before 😎)

Okay, all my friends make fun of me for listening to only one artist so thank god I'm not the only one! And oh that's such a good idea? I'm very bad at making playlists (with the whole one artist thing) but that's a great goal to push yourself 💞

I'm in a (lowkey useless) college readiness class this year, and it just stresses me out instead of accomplishing anything, since I don't know what I want to study! But I'm wishing you all the luck with your next semester — high school is truly the worst 😭💗

  7. I loved this post, May! And way to go for getting those 100 books read. I got to 90 and just couldn’t make it happen, but cramming 12 books between that day in Nov. and December?? Just wow!! Truly — and literally lol — goals!! I’m hoping 2020 will be the year I can both hit 100 books read AND get my reviews for them up in a timely manner! Wishing us both luck!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Aahh Taylor, thank you so much!! 90 books is such a great amount and I’m proud you read that much — I honestly was close to lowering my goal to that in December because I didn’t think I could make it 😭 And oh god, reading a lot of books and managing to review them all is something I have to work on to. But I’m cheering us both on!! ❤

  8. Happy 2020 May!!!! I think 2019 was hard on self-care for EVERYONE. so we’ll see how 2020 goes for the hydration department.
And college prep, oh boy. It can be a lot but it happens. Like you can’t force university into existence? Idk if that makes any sense. But yeah, college will happen, so take a breath in between all the essays. Because you’re a great student and whether you go to the #1 ranked school or just take classes online, you’ll get there.
And a solo dance recital, that’s so exciting!
Why do people push against rereading books? I used to reread books ALL the time but then i feel like i absolutely have to read all the new books. and I’m frustrated because you know, sometimes, i just want to reread a favorite. Definitely want to pick up some of my old favorites this year.

Aww, LIZ! Thank you so much, that honestly means the world to me and I needed to hear it 😭💗 There is just so much Pressure when it comes to college and it’s all so overwhelming, unfortunately.

Yes exactly!! Like don’t get me wrong, right now I’m very excited to read new books since it’s the new year and all, but I know soon I’ll just want to go back to rereading all my comfort books 😭 Hope you get to pick up some favorite books in 2020!!

  10. That’s amazing about this year’s goals! I didn’t set any haha but I don’t think I would’ve done well??? And I actually write poetry in a similar way to the snippet you’ve shared – I call it slam or spoken word personally but it’s more like sentences instead of verses I guess. Happy new year and enjoy 2020 xx

    1. Thank you so much, Rhi!! 💖 And yeah same with writing poetry as sentences thing (or more of in a whole paragraph form, for me)! I saw someone post a poem like that and I wanted to try it out like that, and I ended up really liking it! (So cool that you write poetry too!!) Have a great 2020 💝

      1. Yeah I don’t know why but it’s really fun to write? And sometimes (for me at least) it’s easier than having to try and take out parts that don’t quite fit if you know what I mean (lowkey probably not lol) And ack my poetry isn’t nearly as good as that snippet May!! I might share some in a recap post but I’m still deciding…. 💖

  11. Good luck with your goals! I definitely, without a doubt, failed my 2019 goals. So here’s hoping I do better with my 2020 ones! Being more active on here, getting back into selfcare and saving money are my three main goals that I’m hoping to focus more on.

  12. MIRACULOUS LADYBUG!! I am so obsessed with that show. As in, I’ve been checking for updates on when part 2 of season 3 will release on US Netflix on almost a daily basis. I don’t know if you’ve already checked these out of not, but some other cutesy cartoon shows I’ve recently fallen in love with are “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” and “The Dragon Prince” (which is from some of the same creators as Avatar the Last Airbender and also has the Sokka voice-actor!)

And I also read more webcomics in 2019 (because I didn’t discover them until the summer, lol). Oooh, I’m all up to date on Lore Olympus and Castle Swimmer but I haven’t read Heir’s Game! I’ll have to look into that.

And I also need to work on writing more reviews, doing more creative writing, and interacting/blogging hopping more! Eek! But we got this! (and even if we don’t, that’s okay, because extra stress/pressure isn’t worth it—at least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself, for I also just composed my 2020 goals list)

I hope you have an amazing 2020! Happy reading and writing! 🙂 ❤

    1. I love Miraculous Ladybug so so much!! It brings me comfort like no other ❤ (And if I have to be honest… a lot of the second half of S3 eps are on youtube so I just watched them there 😳) But yes, I've been wanting to watch She-Ra and TDP! Hopefully I'll get around to them this year!

Ah I just caught up with Lore Olympus yesterday!! Heir's game is definitely one of my favorites, I hope you enjoy it if you get around to it ☺💕

Aahh, I'm trying to tell that too myself, but it's so hard to let things go, even if it's healthier too 😭 But good luck, I believe in both of us!! I hope your 2020 has been amazing so far ❤

      1. Ahhh, that’s smart! Oooh yes, I hope you’re able to start watching She-Ra and TDP! They’re both sooo good and I really hope you love them! 😀

I totally agree: it’s so hard to let things go! And totally easier said than done. I keep making such long daily to-do lists this week and stressing myself out because I never get anywhere near to finishing them.
Good luck to you too– we can get a handle on these goals! And thank you–it’s been a bit chaotic, but I’m hoping things will settle down.
I also hope the new year has been treating you well! ❤

  15. Wow, you are much more together than I am with the whole job/college thing. I’m trying to pretend that both completely don’t exist, haha. We’ll see when that catches up with me. XD
Congrats on hitting your Goodreads challenge goal!! I did the majority of my reading at the beginning of the year (thank God) and definitely would not have been able to keep that up, so it’s a very good thing that I kept my goal lower than I thought I would reach.
I’m so out of the loop, I had no idea about the blogger awards!! I will definitely be checking those out and doing some blog hopping. Good luck with everything in 2020 and happy new year!

Thank you so much! I definitely want to do like you and read more at the beginning, rather than cramming it all in at the end like I always do. But ah I’m glad to hear you’ll be checking out the blogs in the blogger awards!! ❤

I'm still a season behind, but I'll likely binge all the episodes I've missed soon lol. I hope you are able to accomplish all your goals this year and you'll be able to practice more self care! Fingers crossed with finding a job as well! Any employer would be so lucky to have you as an employee! ❤
