May’s Moments of the Month: June // Disappointing Pride Books, Writing Progress, & Blogging a Lot!

Pride month’s over so it’s time to hate the gays again.

I’m kidding!!! Mostly.

I’m very sad June’s over, because it means I’m getting closer and closer to going back to school, but it was a really great month for me! There was pretty much only one “bad” thing that happened, and it was only my reading.

But I was able to do a lot of things, like write and blog and just feel a lot HAPPIER without school bearing down on me. And it was the month of the gays so that automatically made it better!!!

mmm reading

I read 10 books this month, and half of them were webcomics. I started to slump and returned to my I-only-want-to-reread-books phase from earlier this year, so that definitely affected how much I enjoyed my books, which made me rate them lower.

Overall, it was a sad reading month because I 1) was disappointed by a few books I selected for Pride specifically because I thought I would love them, 2) didn’t read as much as I expected to, and 3) ended up straying from my Pride TBR!!

Also, I gave a lot of books half-star ratings this month and I am NOT ASHAMED. (I rounded up on all of them, though.)

Red, White & Royal Blue  Eerie Crests  We Set the Dark on Fire (We Set the Dark on Fire, #1)  The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings, #2)  These Witches Don't Burn

  • Red, White & Royal Blue Casey McQuiston // #1 FAVORITE OF THE YEAR!! amazing, beautiful, meaningful, and just pretty much a work of art ★★★★★
  • Eerie Crests Caleb // I was terribly confused at the beginning and still am, but the art is really nice and the story’s intriguing ★★★☆☆
  • We Set the Dark on Fire Tehlor Kay Mejia // expected it to be a 5-star and was disappointed! really beautiful writing and themes, it just lacked something to me ★★★★☆ [3.5]
  • The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy Mackenzi Lee // very bored (took me a week to finish) and the pacing of the plot was so off to me, and also Mackenzi Lee is a mess ★★★☆☆ [2.5]
  • These Witches Don’t Burn Isabel Sterling // fun and enjoyable to read!! gay and witchy and atmospheric, but not particularly special ★★★★☆ [3.5] [review]

We Contain Multitudes    Cosmoknights (Book One)  The Fever King  Sunny Side Skies [Episodes 1-20)

  • We Contain Multitudes Sarah Henstra // lowest-rated book of the year! the romance was just yikes and yucky to me and it was boring ★★☆☆☆ [1.5]
  • Desert Rose Hannah Smith // the art is so beautiful! I love the characters, the story is intriguing and also cute, and I can’t wait for more updates ★★★★☆
  • Cosmoknights Hannah Templer // wow, the art is literally GORGEOUS (I love the colors), and like, gay space wives!!! space gays!!!! ★★★★☆
  • The Fever King Sara Deek, Victoria Lee // one of my favorite books got adapted to a webcomic and obviously I loved it!! there are only 3 eps so no rating but I still count it
  • Sunny Side Skies soaporsalad // cute gay webcomic!! very fluffy so it’s not my favorite but still enjoyable ★★★★☆ [3.5]

book haul?

The four books I got this month all feature sapphic main characters and for that I say, HAPPY PRIDE MONTH.

(Yes I’m still dying over the fact that I GOT GOSAS.)

favorite & disappointing book?

I mean, the answer to both of these is very obvious!! Red, White & Blue is my favorite book of the month AND the year, and We Contain Multitudes is also conveniently my most disappointing book of the month and year as well.

bookish news?

mmm blogging

updates?

  • HEY!!! Did you know I published 8 posts this month? Did you know I actually replied to comments and left my own comments and blog-hopped and commented back? Did you know I’m hosting a blogging-related project?
  • I’m taking one moment to be the tiniest bit proud of myself for all those things because it almost makes me want to cry how much I accomplished last month. I just feel really happy with myself!!
  • In other news, I’m getting back into my blogging rhythm again and it makes me feel… all the positive feelings. (Ignore the fact that I probably will lose it once I go back to school next month.) I’m hosting the 2019 Book Blogger Awards and you should all check my post out to learn more if you haven’t!!

top posts?

(I know it’s a little thing but I CAN ACTUALLY DO MULTIPLE TOP POSTS NOW BECAUSE I POSTED MORE THAN 4 TIMES.)

2019 bba rules  pride recs  advice young

favorite post?

I really loved writing my Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag post, because it’s honestly one of my favorite things to do each year and I always have a lot of fun with it!! Nerding out over books is sadly my brand.

other bloggers’ posts?

(Again, it’s a little thing, but I CAN ACTUALLY DO THESE NOW BECAUSE I’M BEING ACTIVE AAAHHH.)

mmm writing

  • I’m a little proud of myself writing-wise this month?? Because I actually managed to FIGURE OUT A PLOT (or at least the beginning, because I haven’t quite planned out the climax or resolution), and that’s always the hardest part for me.
  • So far I’ve written 6.7k of my WIP! I did pretty well for the first 5 days, but then I didn’t write for an entire week because I lost my motivation. I thought everything I wrote was all genuinely, really bad, but I went back and read over it, and while it definitely wasn’t amazing writing, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was!!
(context: they’re love interests, but in the enemies stage of their enemies to lovers romance, and they are ACTUAL enemies instead of just “I think I hate them but actually have feelings for them”)
  • But, because my brain is just so wonderfully nice, I accidentally came up with another WIP idea!! I have had no writing inspiration or motivation for months, and when I finally recover it for one WIP, I get inspired about another WIP!!!
  • Anyways, I actually really like the idea, and I’m feeling very enthusiastic about it!! I haven’t even figured out like a decent amount of what it’s going to be about (and that’s good because it’s a DISTRACTION), but for now I’ll say that it’s definitely fantasy and features a large dysfunctional found family and I’m so excited to write it.

mmm life

  • Lots of little things happened this month because of how much free time I got from being out of school!
  • First of all, I finished The Umbrella Academy and started The Good Place. I’ve technically watched a lot of TGP eps with my sister, but they’re from all over the seasons, and not actually from the beginning. But I really love the show! I’ve finished watching everything I could (I don’t have access to the first 8 eps of season 3 but oh well).
  • I also watched 2 movies: Booksmart and Into the Spider-verse! Booksmart was actually really good and funny (strong second-hand embarrassment though), and it was my second time watching Spider-verse because I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

Image result for booksmart  Image result for into the spider verse

  • The second biggest thing of the month was dance!! I decided to do a dance solo this year, which is HUGE because the idea of dancing alone onstage terrifies me, but I’m proud of myself and looking forward to learning solo choreo. And it’s been confirmed that my sister and I are going to NYC next year in January (for fun dance things like master classes and Broadway shows) and I am extremely excited!!
  • I also started working out at a gym recently!! Planet Fitness is doing a summer teen challenge thing, where teens can go exercise for free, so my friend and I decided to be GROSS and HEALTHY and do it.
  • My mental health this month was also really great, because I was out of school and didn’t feel crushed by overwhelming anxiety and depression!!!!! I had a few bad days, but for the most part I felt really relaxed and not stressed and sad.

mmm old goals

  • read 13 books  (failed this by a lot)
  • read ONLY queer books  (this was a fake goal but I’m not sorry)
  • publish at least 6 blog posts  (I OUTDID MYSELF AND WROTE 8)
  • stay up to date with latest blog posts (I am so proud of myself!!)
  • PLOT MY DUMB WIP  (I DID!! and I’m very happy)
  • start writing said dumb WIP  (it’s not very good but I wrote!!)
  • do not fall into depression slump  (only a few bad days but overall very good!)

(Oh wow, would you look at that, it’s almost as if not being crushed by school all the time means I can actually do things that I want to do and make me happy.)

mmm new goals

  • read 13 books (I need to get back on track so bad)
  • buddy read!! (I’m planning some BRs with my friends JuLilyMel, and Tiffany and I’m so excited!)
  • publish at least 9 blog posts (it’s technically only 8 real posts which is doable!!)
  • find some new blogs to follow! (a lot of blogs I follow are inactive so this is really important to me!)
  • finish writing 9-14k and edit it (AAAHHH I HAVE TO SUBMIT IT THIS MONTH)
  • start plotting out new WIP idea (me abandoning my current WIP for a shiny new WIP idea is exactly what I expected from myself)
  • don’t get too anxious about school (I already started to feel overwhelmed last month when I thought about going back to school and it’s going to get worse in July)
  • don’t procrastinate/stress about MUN stuff (I have some writing/research to do for a school-run MUN conference that I’m part of this year and it’s a little stressful!!)

mmm looking ahead

Lots of blogging! I feel so refreshed coming back to blogging and actually being able to do the things I wanted to do, and it’s definitely making me very motivated. The first round of the Book Blogger Awards will be finishing up this month (and I’ll be doing a lot of work to count up all the nominations aaahh), and I’m just super excited for all the posts I’m planning to write this month!

Dance and exercise. I have a dance intensive coming up later this month, and it lasts 9 to 4 for three days. I also have 4 more hours of dance rehearsals after the intensive on two of those days, so in total, it’s 29 hours of dance in a 72-hour period!!! I’m so excited!!!! On top of that, I’m also going to continue working out at the gym with a friend this month. So basically, I’m going to die!!

Basically my last month of freedom. I’m definitely going to have breakdowns when I get nearer and nearer to the day I have to return to school (and also when I actually go back to school), but I’m going to try to make my last month count!! Seeing how happy and healthy I am without school is honestly horrifying, because I have school for pretty much 75% of the year but… I’ll survive.

shall we chat

how was your June?? did you read a lot of good books for Pride? are you participating in the Book Blogger Awards? are you participating in Camp NaNoWriMo??

p.s. this is a GIGANTIC post (2K words long) but I’m not sorry!!!

  2. AGHHHH MAY! I’M SO FREAKING HAPPY FOR YOU! This recap sounds like you have had a really good June. I recently went to the Pride Parade in NYC to support my friend, and WOW IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! If you came to New York City a bit earlier, you probably wouldn’t have missed it, but I think it’s great that you’re coming for your dance classes. NYC in the winter time is so beautiful! Anyways, I hope you have an equally awesome July! (and 9 posts in July woah you can do it queen!)

  3. What a great month for you! I don’t know if I have read a wrap up post that made me feel so good and happy for the writer. Yay for your NOTdumb book. And yay for meeting most of your goals! I know keeping up with comments is rough, I myself am trying to be better about ACTUALLY commenting on posts, let alone responding back to mine. LMAO. Way to be! I know it doesn’t seem like a lot to you, but I look at you and I think to myself: Goals.

  4. If you’re not in complete and total love with Alex and Henry are you even human??? that is the question of the century.

Oh, you’re WIP sounds so good! I really liked the excerpt you shared, it sounds very fun and I’m always a sucker for enemies to lovers. And a dysfunctional found family??? GIVE IT TO ME, hehehe

I really hope you can enjoy your July even though the doom f school is approaching. Plot all the WIPs and enjoy all your buddy reads and just really enjoy summer! 💕

u reading we contain multitudes thinking it would be like ari and dante: [insert image of clown] and did u only include the bookish news sections to get point for the harley street team or r u better than that.

okay see I had a feeling it was NOT going to be like Ari and Dante, but I was expecting at least a good gay story. and fhsdlkfhsd I mean yes I love those points but I just GENUINELY COULDN’T REMEMBER ANY OTHER BOOK NEWS TO SHARE

I love you for all your support of my writing even though I don’t deserve it !!!! and yes I need to watch Stranger Things and I promise I will

RW&RB sounds amazing, but first I have to find it?? Like why is getting some books so damn hard in Australia! Enjoy summer xx

      1. That’s the worst. I’m starting a new book today and I’m not really in a reading mood, which isn’t common for me. I don’t think it’s a slump, just the long weekend in with my husband. I hope you can get into it soon and love it.

  9. I’m so glad you had a great month!! Congrats on your progress on your WIPs and also on blogging- it made me so happy to see you being proud of yourself because YES YOU DESERVE IT 🙌🏼💓

All your dance stuff sounds so exciting! That is so so cool that you’re going to NYC for master classes and then just sightseeing things?? That’s one of my dancing dreams (which might not ever happen because my dancing career will probably end after high school, but it’s okay).

I’m sorry that the thought of school has you stressed, but I hope you manage to not think about it too much this month. ❤ I just found out the other day that my school starts on August 15th and??? I think Texas needs to become Hogwarts and start on September 1st.

I hope you have a wonderful July, May!

    1. Aww, THANK YOU SO MUCH OLIVIA!! Your sweet words make me so happy 😭💗 And yes, I’m so blessed to be going to NYC! I went there 4 years ago and it was amazing, but I wasn’t old enough to take classes at Steps yet, so I’m really excited to go this time haha. And I hope you get to NYC one day as well!! ❤

Yeah, I think my school starts on August 7 or 8 and I'm so not ready for it 😭 Texas schools just start WAY too early!!

  10. I love your blog omg. And ahhh Red, White & Royal Blue is on my TBR but no bookshops here are selling it so I’m gonna have to wait a while ugh. But! I read a few books featuring lgbt characters which is AWESOME! And I’m so glad you had more good days this month — I’m happy for you. And with school, it sucks a lot. I hated it. It’s not easy at all to continue with it, especially when it makes anxiety and depression so much worse. I am here if you ever do want to talk! My virtual door is always open ♥️

And I’m thinking of participating in NaNoWriMo! I got a new idea for a fantasy book, with a sapphic lead and a lot of pizza, sarcasm and sunrises. And she’s also going to be a POC, which I’m super excited about!

    1. AWW, THANK YOU, ANGEL!! And aahh I hope you’re able to get RW&RB as soon as possible!! I’m glad you were able to read a lot of LGBTQIAP+ books this month too ❤ And aah thank you, school is rough but I'm just trying to enjoy my time free from it while I can lmao

And aahh yay, your WIP sounds so good!! Wishing you all the luck with it ❤

  12. I’m glad you had a good month! It definitely helps to not have the crushing weight of school pounding you into the ground bleh. I always stress out about the fact that summer is going to end sooner than I want it to and I’ll have to go back to school, but I’m trying to be more positive and working on living in the moment more and enjoying it while I can.
CONGRATS ON PLOTTING YOUR WIP!!! Plotting is SO STINKIN’ HARD. And writing too?? You deserve mangoes. ALL the mangoes.
Yes, shiny new WIPs have a way of showing up right when I REALLY DON’T need them. But then I want them anyway? And I don’t want to let go of the WIP I already have so then I end up carrying around way too many ideas and not being able to really focus and work on one because I’m dropping things all over the place.
Ooh, yes Spiderverse is so good! I just love Miles SO MUCH ❤
That's so awesome that you're going to NYC! Do you have any idea what shows you want to go see?
I hope you have a great July! And best of luck with your dance solo!!!

    1. Aw, thank you!! It really is so much less stressful to not be in school. It makes me really sad seeing how happy and healthy I can be without it and know I have to return to it soon, but like you, I’m just holding up the best I can!

And aahh THANK YOU!!! I haven’t completely plotted out my WIP, but it was a good enough start for me haha. And oh, I’m the type of person to just drop my old ideas for the new shiny one, but I can see how wanting to write multiple at the same time is annoying too!!

I’m not quite sure what shows I’m going to see yet, since my dance director coordinates everything and she hasn’t told us yet! ☺

  13. I absolutely looooveeee this wrap up! June was a stupid busy month for me so I feel like I didn’t do anything productive. I need to find some more inspo on getting more consistent with my blog because I enjoy it so much but find myself at like a lackluster feeling with it 😭 Good luck in July!!🥳

    1. Aw, thank you!! I’m sorry you feel like you didn’t get to do anything productive, but it’s completely fine not to accomplish everything you wanted to and just exist ❤ But I hope you can find some fulfillment with blogging this month! ❤

  14. Aw, May, it sounds like you mostly had a lovely month. I’m happy you’re feeling a lot more active in the blogosphere, especially since you’re one of my favorite voices on the web (Example A, you being very real about how we’re all just going to go back to hating gays *cough* big companies *cough*). I’ve also started The Good Place, and I find it really good, but for some reason can’t invest in it as much as I love it. I love the representation in it though and I’m obsessed with Jameela Jamil! Anyway, I hope you have a lovely July and can’t wait to read your next posts!

  15. Dude, I got sucked into the webcomics too in June! (This was actually my first time reading webcomics and WOW, I fell hard). I’m currently caught up on & following Lore Olympus, Castle Swimmer, Assassin Roommate, True Beauty, and Crumbs.

Oooh, I’m currently reading Her Royal Highness and I plan to read Red, White, and Royal Blue right afterwards. 😂

Congrats on a great month of writing and blogging! I can’t wait to hear more about your WIPs (I loved the snippet you shared!). And yes, I’m participating in Camp NaNo this month! Hbu? Hmm, speaking of which, I should go write, because I’m already kinda behind…

I hope your July is even better and that your mental health stays in a good place! Happy reading! 🙂

Thank you so much!! You’re so sweet 😭💖 And oh, good luck with Camp NaNo! I’m sure you’ll do amazing!!!! I’m not doing it this time around, but I probably should have signed up for it to keep myself motivated 😅

Not a 5 star read, but I really had a great time with it. I need to read WSTDOF soon too! Don’t worry about straying from your TBR too much, I do it all the time and it’s a Problem. I’m so proud of you and your blogging this month, and I LOVED all the posts you put out! So happy that you killed your goals in June, and I hope you have an amazing July! Also thank you so much for featuring my post, it means so much 😭💖 I need to finish my blogger awards post, it’s coming up soon, I promise!
